  1. I would guess that your new modem is configured as a DHCP server, so it is handing out IP addresses as well as your router. You are going to have to turn one of the DHCP servers off. I fixed this on a friend's system when his ISP sent him a new modem that had DHCP turned on. It screwed his whole system up intermittently.
  2. If absolute write speed is your primary concern, then unRAID may not be the solution for you. There are other RAID solutions that are optimized for speed and multi-user file sharing systems. That being said, I use unRAID and am very happy with the speeds. I was getting about 35-40 MBps without using a cache drive. I decided to add a cache drive and get somewhere between 70 and 90 MBps sustained transfer rates now. That speed is probably being limited by the hard drive I am transferring data from, but pretty darn good.
  3. In my opinion, a managed switched is not going to gain you anything in a home network. You can look at the features (the link you posted) and decide if will currently or will need any of the features. The main features would be the network security features, VLAN support, etc. Your savings comparison isn't really fair either - you're comparing new on Newegg to an eBay item. You can get 1Gbs unmanaged switch on eBay for probably $50-100. I personally use unmanaged switches at home.
  4. Wouldn't you just go into the main unRAID management page, stop the array, and then in the drop down disk of the disk you want to remove, change it from the disk/serial number to Unassigned?
  5. I did not have any issues with the LAN chipset. I was afraid I might, but I read the problems AFTER I ordered by motherboard, but no issues at all. I am running version 5.0-rc5-r8168. They are SATA II ports, but no issue at all for me. This runs at home and not a multi-user system for the most part. I use it as a media hub to store my music and movies, as well as store backups for each computer, which run every night. I am running a cache drive and get sustained transfer rates of between 70-90 MBs. With a 1Gbs network, it isn't going to get much better than that anyway. Without the cache drive I was getting between 30-40 MBs, so the parity calculations were the bottleneck there.
  6. I had a similar problem with one of my drives. I set it the share to use a cache drive but it didn't stick. I went back in and set, hit "apply" the "done" and it has worked since. Double-check your settings on the share.
  7. I didn't even think of the shortcut option - that works perfect. Thanks for tip!
  8. Thanks for the quick response Nick. So is there no way to map to the top level? I find it strange that i can type the top level into the address bar but can't map to it. Networking drives me nuts! :'(
  9. A little more information... The same is also true if use the name instead of the IP address, so \\tower works by just typing it into the navigation bar of Windows explorer, but not if I put it into the "map network drive" dialog. Thanks.
  10. I can go into Windows Explorer and type the IP address of my unRAID server it it shows the top level - Disk1, Disk2, Share1, Share2, etc. Also, I can map directly to a share by doing \\ip/name\sharename. So I can put put these in Windows Explore and they work fine... \\192.168.0.100 - brings up top level of unRAID and I can browse the disks and shares \\192.168.0.100\movies - lets me browse just the movies share However, if I go to map a network drive to assign a drive letter the first one does not work, the second one does. Any reason why? Thanks,
  11. I agree, but I was trying to keep it cheap for now. I can add the 5 in 3 drive cages later, as the case will take them. I would love to have the hot-swapping ones, but those alone would add a couple hundred dollars to my build.
  12. Thought I would post a quick update with a picture after my build, hopefully so other can see an inexpensive build that works. 1. Total cost for hardware was $289 2. Cost of unRAID software was $69 3. I already had all of the disks 4. System went together and booted from USB first try - no issues at all 5. Like the case a lot - for $60 it is very nice. There are three fans that come with the case and they are very quiet. It keeps everything nice and cool. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, and thanks for all the help that these boards provided!
  13. I did try mounting it as HPFS as well - still no luck. I think I am giving up and just going to put the drive in a USB3 enclosure, hook it to my desktop and copy from there. I hate giving up because figuring it out is half the fun, but this one is killing me! Thanks for your help.
  14. No luck. Get the error "The device '/dev/sdc1' (or 'dev/sdc') doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS." I guess maybe I am out-of-luck on this one?
  15. Thanks Joe - I will give that a try and see what happens and report back.
  16. Thanks for the quick reply. Still no luck though - I get the same error when trying to mount. Here is the log from dmesg command... NTFS-fs error (device sdc1): is_boot_sector_ntfs(): Invalid boot sector checksum NTFS-fs error (device sdc1): read_ntfs_boot_sector(): Primary boot sector is invalid NTFS-fs error (device sdc1): read_ntfs_boot_sector(): Mount option errors=recover not used. Aborting without trying to recover NTFS-fs error (device sdc1): ntfs_fill_super(): Not an NTFS volume. I then tried using -o errors=recover and the third line is replaced with this... NTFS-fs error (device sdc1): read_ntfs_boot_sector(): Could not find a valid backup boot sector. That does not look promising. Thoughts? Thanks.
  17. I am setting up an unRAID server and these forums haven been great! Up to this point, so-far so-good. However, I have run into a problem I cannot figure out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have put an NTFS drive into the unRAID server and followed the directions in the Configuration Tutorial to copy files from an internal hard drive. At the unRAID linux command prompt, I type... fdisk -l | grep NTFS and get... /dev/sdc1 * 1 243202 1953512448 7 HPFS/NTFS I then create a place to mount the drive by typing... mkdir /mnt/imported_files Then I try to mount using... mount -r -t ntfs /dev/sdc1 /mnt/imported files and I get this error... wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found is syslog - try dmesg | tail or so I have searched the forums and in general on Google and cannot figure out what the problem is. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  18. Frank, Thanks for the quick response... and good point. I guess I just can't make myself buy such a low end processor! What if I do want to run some add-ons later? LOL. Maybe I'll want a new machine for me and send this one to college with my daughter. So otherwise, does the hardware look OK? Thanks...
  19. I have picked out the following hardware to build an unRaid Server that will be used at home. It will be used for system backups of several computers as well as storing movies to stream to my HTPC. I would like to know if there are any incompatibilities in what i have selected. By the way, other threads in this forum has been very helpful... I read until I couldn't see straight! LOL. Budget: Wanted to keep the build at about $300 without drives Number of Drives/Expandability: I plan to start with 6 (4 data drives, 1 parity, 1 cache). I will add as time goes on and space is required, but will probably never go over 10 to 12. Ad-Ons: Probably not. I have an existing Home Theater PC that I do encoding and playback on. Green Drives: Yes, probably will run mostly green drives Spare Parts: None, except I already have 4 Samsung HD204UI 2TB drives I will use, as well as a 7200 RPM drive for the cache drive So, here is the hardware I have chosen... Case: RAIDMax Seiran ATX902WB ($64.99 with rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156269 Power Supply: Rosewill HIVE Series 650 80 Plus Bronze, Modular ($59.99 with Promo) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182132 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P AM3+ AMD 760G Micro ATX ($49.99 after rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128504 Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 260 Regor 3.2GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core ($64.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103873 Memory: Crucial Ballistix sport 4GB (2x2GB) 240-pin SDRAM DDR3 1333 ($24.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148541 I have also have ordered the SATA cables from Monoprice. Thanks for any help and suggestions...
