The script will pause and try to kill any instances of smartctl and hdparm programs that take longer than 30 seconds running. Since your computer have zombie processes of those programs, the script keeps trying to kill them. Just a reboot will fix that.

You have a disk with S.M.A.R.T problems, serial Z4Z2JY5V. Probably it got dropped by the hard disk controller when you started a preclear session. The only way to be sure is to run Preclear again and, if it fails, share your Diagnostics file here (at Tools menu of your server).

I see no reason why this would not work, but some users had problems with USB hard drives before. You can easily try it yourself, the odds are that it will work for you.

I've loved the message, but frankly the vehicle was not appropriated. IMHO if some functionality is part of the plugin scope, that's ok just allow users to opt-out. If it isn't part of the scope, it should be an opt-in functionality. I got many criticism (@Squid included) about the statistics system in Preclear Plugin because it was in the beginning an opt-out system, and they were right. Since it was out of the scope of the plugin, I've added it as a separated plugin. Squid should do the same, an opt-in system to messages unrelated to Community Applications scope.
