  1. I'm glad it helped. I'm still debating about returning this and getting a WD20EARX from Amazon for $10 more - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VFJ9MK
  2. I regularly reference the excellently written Configuration Tutorial - http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial It covers everything from setting up Networking to installing unMenu, preclearing your drives and setting up shares and adding your data. There's also a lot of info in the other wiki's.
  3. Here's the contact info, if that helps: http://lime-technology.com/company/contact
  4. OK, thanks, I've started the pre-clear cycle.
  5. Note: using unRAID v 4.7 I had a disk get disabled/red-balled after a parity check and replaced it with another I had available (after the new one was pre-cleared in another system). My main system is back up and running with the new drive, after a re-build by unRAID, so my data is safe. Before I replaced the disabled drive, I ran a short smart test: smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 Serial Number: WD-WMAZA274XXXX Firmware Version: 51.0AB51 User Capacity: 2,000,398,934,016 bytes Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: Exact ATA specification draft version not indicated Local Time is: Fri Apr 20 15:28:03 2012 EDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay. I've done a lot of reading, but I'm still confused about how to interpret these reports. I suspect these lines are most concerning: This one didn't change between reports: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 199 199 051 Pre-fail Always - 1554 and this one which did: short test: 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 001 000 Old_age Always - 70 long test: 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 198 001 000 Old_age Always - 743 and then there is this one, which I'm not sure about: 200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate 0x0008 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 58 I had been tracking the MZER raw number which was going up over time, but now I've read that the raw number doesn't matter and to look at the VALUE and WORST which haven't changed. I've read that the current pending sectors will get re-mapped (if possible) on a subsequent write, but does the VALUE and WORST of 198 001 on Current_Pending_Sector indicate this disk is toast? My plan was to run a pre-clear cycle on the disk and then check it with WD diagnostics to determine if it should be RMA'd? Is that the best course to take? TIA
  6. I just received one of these and they are labeled as Samsung, Model: ST2000DL004, HDD P/N: HD204UI and also have www.seagate.com and Barracuda Green on the label. I wonder if this is what Seagate is going to use to cover the Green 5400 RPM market segment, since I understand that Seagate was switching to 7200 RPM for their drives. Anyway, I just checked the warranty for the drive here: http://support.seagate.com/warranty and it expires 3-28-2013 and the drive was manufactured on 3/2012, so only one year. That wasn't what I was expecting. I thought I read that Seagate and WD had lowered their warranties on green drives to 2 years. Now I see that it's only 1 year for Seagate green drives - http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_and_seagate_cut_hard_drive_warranty_lengths I should've done more research, but I checked Newegg's page on this drive and it showed and still shows a 3 year manu warranty on the detail tab: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245
  7. To run preclear with email notifications, use something like: ./preclear_disk.sh -m [email protected] -M 4 /dev/sdX replace youremail and sdX with your own parameters. If you added "("root" email address)" to the end when you executed the command, that would give you an error.
  8. I've seen these at my local library to check out.

  13. Just kidding about replacing unRAID, but it might be an interesting way to access your movies and augment your home server. http://www.vudu.com/disc_to_digital_press_release.html I'm not sure how this is going to work, or if it's going to be cost effective for Walmart/VUDU, but it appears you take your DVD/BD to Walmart and for $2 have access to it thru VUDU (all of its various apps and players) for no additional fee for your "lifetime" (or the lifetime of the service). You can have access to the VUDU SD version for your DVD and $2, or the HD/HDX version for your BD and $2, or upgrade your DVD to HD for $5. As an example - the movie Blade hasn't been released on Blu-ray, so you could take a DVD of Blade and pay $5 and get HD access as often as you want. Blade rents for $3.99 for HD, $4.99 for HDX for a one time viewing. It seems like there wouldn't be anything preventing someone from buying a used disc, borrowing from family/friend or renting from the video store and taking it to Walmart to get "ownership" of their "cloud" access to the movie, since you get to keep your disc. It would be a lot cheaper then the $15 to $20 they want to "own".
  14. I got mine from monoprice. It looks to me like they have a bunch of different SATA cables in stock. There are a few 18" cables that are OOS, but lots of other lengths and colors. http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10226 Here is one for $0.69 or less: 24inch SATA 6Gbps Cable w/Locking Latch (90 Degree to 180 Degree) - Black
  15. Adequate for what? I put a 4GB compact flash card in my Zbox and installed XBMC Live on it.

  17. CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 (CMPSU-430CXV2) 430W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply $16.99 after MIR w/ FS Promo code: EMCNJHD22
  18. Sorry, you are right, I was remembering incorrectly. The Newegg cables are shorter, and the Monoprice ones are longer. Both work equally well (though the longer cables pose a cable organization challenge). Last time I checked, monoprice had 0.5m, 0.75m, and 1.0m cables. The only 0.5 meter mini-SAS cable that I see on Monoprice is this one: 0.5m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male w/ Latch to SATA 7pin Female (x4) Forward Breakout Cable - Black Which doesn't look the same as this one: 1m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male to Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male Cable - Black
  19. Those cables are correct, but here's a better source for the miniSAS cables: Monoprice.com. Those cables are shorter (which is good) and half the price. The quality is fine. You'll need two of these cables for each SASLP card. Typically four total miniSAS cables are needed (for two SASLP cards), and two reverse breakout cables (for the 6 onboard ports). It looks like the Monoprice cables are 1 meter long and the Newegg cables are only a half meter. Or am I missing something? Is Newegg the best (only) place to get the reverse breakout cables?
  20. NORCO RPC-4224 4U Rackmount Server Case with 24 Hot-Swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays It looks like this is as cheap as it's been since last May.
  21. Thanks, that worked. I forgot how to use find. Is that for another version of unRAID? I'm not familiar with unRAID-Web.
  22. Is there any easy way to determine which disk a file resides on? I've been doing it by trying to cd to the directory - e.g. cd /mnt/disk1/Movies/whatever, cd /mnt/disk2/Movies ... It seems like that info must be stored somewhere. edit: I'm using version 4.7, btw.
  23. It must have expired, there was no coupon, it was just $69.99 (with note that it was $10 off) on their site. I didn't see any 8 gig sticks for the X9 server board.
