    CSE-846 and Cooling

The only thing I can think of is that because the space is so limited, it's increasing air pressure. I had read somewhere that Tctl was useful for fan control and that's why I was thinking I should use it, but now that I am thinking about it, Unraid isn't controlling the cpu fan, so if I just want to see the cpu temp I should probably be using Tdie. Chalk this one up to me overthinking things. Thank you. Except for the temperature issues, it's been turning out better than I expected.
  2. This is going to be a bit of a lengthy setup with questions at the end. I ran out of room in my old case and went with a Supermicro 846 with the BPN-SAS2-846EL1. I had also been planning an upgrade for awhile and did that at the same time. I went with a Ryzen 7 3800X on the AsRock Taichi x570. My house does not have a great place to keep servers and networking equipment so for now I am making use of a small hallway closet. Eventually I need to add some type of venting but I have made no decisions on that as of yet. Keeping the door cracked open is working just fine. The 846 just barely fits inside this closet. I ended up making a little cart and I have the server sitting on it's side. The old server sat directly on the floor (tile) underneath the bottom shelf and it seemed to trap a lot of heat. The new server actually sits at the front of the closet before where the shelf starts and the whole closet actually seems to be cooler. Noise was a bit of an issue so I have taken steps to quiet the server down. I took out the power supplies that came with it and replaced them with one of the SQ power supplies. I replaced the 2 80mm fans at the back of the case with 2 Noctua NF-R8 redux-1800 PWM. Because the Noctua are thinner than the fans they replaced there were some large gaps so I 3D printed some spacers to make sure the air flow was exhausting out the back. This picture shows 1 fan with the gap and the other with the spacer. I also took out the fan wall with the 3 80mm fans and 3D printed a new fan wall for 3 120mm fans and I used Arctic P12 PWM PST. (I had to make it in 3 pieces because of the size of my working 3D printer.) As I've seen suggested elsewhere, I also sealed up the vent holes on the sides of the case so that air will be pulled through the front across the hard drives. I also taped over the inside vent holes of the drive trays that do not currently have hard drives mounted. All of this has quieted the server down. In fact, I think it's quieter than my old server. However, I am now worried about temps. Initially I noticed my hard drive temps getting close to dangerous levels. This was during my initial testing when I was leaving the lid off the case. That meant the air wasn't getting pulled from the front of the case but rather from the huge gap that was now open between the backplane and the fan wall. Put the lid back on and temps were a little bit better, but still not great. At this point I turned the fan wall fans and the 2 rear exhaust fans to run at max speed in the bios and again, temps got a little bit better. Funny thing is, the hard drive temps dropped even lower once I put the server in the closet. Currently they mostly stay in the 20's and 30's which is good, but a few of them do seem to go over 40 degrees at times. I also have an M.2 NVME drive and 2 SSD's. The NVME drive is mounted in a slot between the CPU socket and the first PCI-E slot. For the SSD's I ended up making a mounting bracket that uses the mounting points of the case as seen here: All 3 of these drives see temperature spikes. The NVME can get up around 50 degrees and the 2 SSD's can see around 46 degrees. I have only just figured out how to get the cpu and mb temps to show up in Unraid. Looks like the cpu idles around 60 degrees. (Technically 8% load, but I do not see the Ryzen drop below that even though the Intel I7 7700 I had in my last server would.) Currently using the stock AMD heatsink and fan. Here's a picture that shows the overall layout as it is right now: One thing that I am wondering about is if I should switch to a heatsink and fan for the cpu that moves air in the same direction as the other fans? I'm thinking that maybe the current heatsink and fan are impeding the flow a bit. Maybe creating a bit of a whirlwind and keeping hot air inside the case and keeping the cpu temp a little hotter than it could be? Maybe also blowing hot air across the NVME which is why it gets so hot? Because the case sits on it's side, the 2 SSD's are at the top of the case and so maybe they are getting hot because heat rises and there's not enough airflow exiting the case pulling hot air away from them? I have thought that I could make a new mounting bracket that rotates them 90 degrees and make it possible to hold 4 SSD's and have something like a 50mm fan that blows air across them. Should I also be adding fans to the front of the case as others have done to force more air inside across the hard drives? Bonus questions... in the System Temp plugin I'm using k10Temp - Tctl for CPU temp and nct6798 - SYSTIN for motherboard temp. Are these the correct sensors for those? I am also trying to figure out which sensor to use for the Fan Auto Control plugin. There's nct6798 pwm1-7. I am assuming that I would want to find the one that controls the fans on the fan wall, but not sure which sensor goes to which motherboard pwm fan header.
  3. IOMMU group 1: [8086:1901] 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v5/E3-1500 v5/6th Gen Core Processor PCIe Controller (x16) (rev 05) [10de:1b81] 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] (rev a1) [10de:10f0] 01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1) This is what mine looks like on a Gigabyte Z170. I have had no problems passing through my graphics card without the need for the ACS override.
  4. I could use a little help. I've got the LetsEncrypt docker setup and it's working for things like Emby no problem. No I am trying to setup some websites for testing. I managed to get a wordpress site working with .conf file in the site-confs folder so that it uses a subdomain of my domain. So that much works. I've also tried setting up a phpBB forum on it's own subdomain, but that isn't working. I add the .conf file for nginx that comes with phpBB to the site-confs folder (modified with my domain details) and I just get an error that it can't connect the default site and the wordpress site stop working as well. I've tried searching but have not come across anything that has worked so far. Any one who has successfully gotten phpBB to work with this docker have any ideas?
  5. Now they are down to $159 for the 10TB and $129 for the 8TB.
  6. Looks like they are on sale for $179 again.
  7. I was sure this wasn't the issue, but then I remembered that I made some hardware changes to my server a few months ago and could no longer use the internal usb port I was using before. None of the usb ports on the back of the case are usb 2.0 and that was where I moved the flash drive to. For the moment I can only try putting the flash drive in one of the front usb ports (that are 2.0) and see what happens. However, it is still a bit weird because I am sure that I must have rebooted the server at least once or twice between when I did the hardware changes and when I recently started having problems.
  8. Just wondering if this is a sign that the usb flash drive I'm using for Unraid is dying. I've been using it for as long as I've had Unraid which is about 3 and a half years and I've had no problems until recently. It seems that whenever I reboot my server the flash drive disappears from the bios and because of that Unraid fails to boot. At that point if I move the flash drive to another usb port the bios picks it up again and boots just fine once it is selected as the boot device again.
  9. To use your Flash series as an example, you would create a Flash (2014) folder, the year in the folder name is only needed to differentiate from Flash (1990), where your Emby tv library is pointing to. Inside that folder (this part may no longer be needed but I still do it), you would create at least one season folder, ie Season 1. When Auto Organize sees a new file in the watch folder, it will try to parse the name and see if it matches with an existing series in Emby. If it matches, it renames and moves the file to the correct location for that series. There are rare times where this doesn't work because it can't figure out what series a file belongs to (and Auot Organize only works with series, not movies). In that case, click on the folder icon next to the listed file. Here you can specify which series, season, and episode number the file is. If you click on "remember this correction" it will add it to the list of smart matches and should take care of it properly next time.
  10. An easy way is probably to use Emby's Auto Organize plugin.
  11. Just updated to the latest Unraid RC and I haven't checked the Seagate drive yet, but I was able to run a smart test on the ssd now so it looks like it's working. Thank you both @dlandon and @bonienl for looking into this.
  12. Still not working. Neither an SSD connected to the motherboard nor the Seagate backup drive connected by usb.
  13. One is an ssd connected to the motherboard, the other is a Seagate Backup Plus connected by usb and shows smart info.
  14. Should I be able to run the smart tests on unassigned drives? I click on the start buttons and nothing happens. It does work on my array drives.
  15. I was playing with Plex as a dvr and I noticed that I am not able to delete the files it creates using File Explorer on a Windows pc (user share set to secure). It appears to be a permissions issue. PUID is 99 and PGID is 100 and this is the same as the Deluge docker, but I have no problems deleting files created by Deluge. Any ideas?
  16. You can use either Plex or Emby and I believe that Kodi has a plugin for each of them. Might be a bit of overkill, but it works.
  17. I wouldn't say that. A good example is in the video about using a cache share for a Steam Library. That needs to be cache only. That way you have games stored for long term on the array, but active games being stored on the cache drive.
  18. I'm not much help in answering your question, but I can say that this is one of those things that I am planning on trying out as well. Just waiting on a new disk to get done preclearing and then I can move to some new hardware that will handle VM's better. I have used Gamestream from a non virtual non headless Windows 10 pc and it worked ok.
  19. I'm sorry, I was avoiding this thread until I had time to answer ALL of the related posts. My apologies to you. I suppose I would have considered killing it after 5 to 6 hours, definitely if it was still running after 10 hours. I don't have any ideas yet as to what could have gone wrong. Can you tell if there is any I/O to the drive? Syslog may help, post your diagnostics (Need help? Read me first!) We should take this to a separate thread. Thank you, that's all I needed to know. The only indication that there is something going on is the number of writes listed on the Main tab is slowly increasing for that drive and the parity drive. The syslog only shows that the process has started and nothing related since. Because this is in preparation for some significant hardware changes (new motherboard etc.), I am not really that worried about it. I've got 2 other 500GB drives I was planning on removing from the array as well and so as soon as I get my new drive precleared and the data moved off those other 2 drives, I'll just rebuild parity anyways.
  20. Well since no one is telling me that this is normal or not and it's been over 50 hours, I guess I'll have to see about killing the script.
  21. It's been over 24 hours and it's still running. Does it really take this long for a 500GB hard drive? I could have just pulled the drive and rebuilt parity and it would have been done by now.
  22. For the Clear an Unraid array data drive script, just how long should it take? I used it on a 500GB drive and it's been running for around 15 hours now. I used the run in background option and I don't see any sort of progress indicator except that it says "Running".
  23. Update CA. Those errors are what the "I'd like to reiterate about manually editing xml files" comment is about in the previous post, (and why the blacklist processing got changed) And yeah, they are harmless, but ultimately caused by a particular way to malform an xml file. I believe it happened once after updating today, but I could be wrong. I can let you know if it happens again.
  24. Got another one for you Squid. This does not happen every time I open CA, but I have noticed it about 3 times today. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues that I can see as it goes away as soon I click on anything else.
  25. Easy enough to know for sure. Check for updates. Normally yes, but since I seem to be having an issue with plugins right now, I couldn't be sure.
