  1. I did type diagnostics, the above was an autocorrect. I know I saw the CLI put out a timestamped file name after the first attempt, but it was late and I was fading. Will dig some more tonight. Would the second one have overwritten the first? Motherboard is SuperMicro x9dri-lnf+, which doesn't have USB 3.0. I am using the 2.0 port that is directly attached to the surface, not the I/O on the back. Will do some research on flash drives and put something better in. I remember having that concern when I first setup a "demo" unraid server a few months ago, but forgot about it when everything popped right up.
  2. Thanks for responding. A few more reboots and it was up and running again, this time with the SATA cable attached, so the drive is now preclearing. It seems no worse for the wear except that the preclear plugin was gone and had to be reinstalled. Also, the bjp script was no longer there. No idea on that one. Before it magically started working again, I used putty to ssh in and use the logistics command from the CLI, then I shutdown and put the flash in another computer to send it, but I couldn't find it (maybe hidden file? did not think of that until this morning). Put it back in and rebooted to see if I could get at it another way, that's when it came back online. I ran the attached diag file from the GUI AFTER it was up again, so I don't know how useful it is at this point. I assumed since they are time stamped the first one would be there somewhere, will look again tonight. Now I'm thinking about whether my "Staples Relay" branded 4gb sandisk flash drive is to blame. Thanks all! tower-diagnostics-20170820-2351.zip
  3. Just realized that I had not connected an sata cable from mobo to the backplane, which would explain why unraid didn't see it. But now I am even more concerned about the stability as I have no idea why any of this would affect the GUI. I can reach the mobo via IPMI and I can ping the tower ip. No GUI and no shares accessible from another computer
  4. Adding a brand new drive (fresh from Best Buy). I have a SuperMicro case and board that supposedly allows hotswap, but this didn't go so well. I neglected to stop the array, thinking that it wouldn't matter since this would be an unassigned device at first. Inserted the drive without powering down, GUI didn't see it after refreshing. Restarted via the GUI, and watched it boot normally to the Tower Login prompt. However, I cannot reach the GUI anymore nor the VM that autostarts (via Chrome Remote desktop on another laptop). Seems like it's there because I can ping the IP, and the login prompt is there, but no GUI. Doesn't matter whether the new drive is physically connected or not. I have nothing of consequence on it yet, but what did I manage to do here? Is it really this easy to bring everything down?
  5. That's what i did at first, and the tuner (dish vip211 with r5000) was being reported in the plugin as a Cypress Semiconductor, and windows would install a generic driver. Since I posted, somewhere along the way something changed and the plugin reported it as an Anchor Chips Python2 WDM Encoder, and windows installed the correct driver. Neither of those names mean anything to me though. Next problem is that the r5000 software doesnt want to activate with my 10 yr old license key, which worked fine on another computer. Hmmmmmmm
  6. I was able to find a pattern of unplugging/replugging the tv tuner device and restarting the VM that allowed it to run, so i went into device manager and uninstalled it and deleted the driver files (which i had uploaded myself). Immediate issue fixed, but the tuner is central to my need for a vm so I will need to start digging for reasons it doesn't work. It wasn't working properly before the VM began refusing to start, but I had just begun to work with it.
  7. I had successfully setup my first vm using Win7, which was just about done with its final round of downloading all the big windows updates, and the vm wanted a reboot. It now fails on launch complaining that it "didn't find usb device 4b4:8613". The VM logs only show failed startups, and the Unraid log is just filling up with errors involving the preclear plugin, which i havent even used n the past few days. How do i track down the missing usb device? I hadn't gotten around to passing anything through yet, although that is the goal. There was one tv tuner device plugged in at the time, although I do not believe the drivers had installed correctly. Also, when installing the Virt drivers, I was unable to simply righ-click/install the inf files. I had to go to each missing device in device mgr and install them one by one. I had a missing device that may have gotten assigned the tv tuner driver. How can I remove these without killing the entire VM and starting over?
  8. ok. so i get the same result if i share and then just copy/paste to tower from another windows machine?
  9. Dumb question: how do you move files to the root usb while the server is running? Been searching, but apparently not with my good brain. Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
  10. Maybe I'm misunderstanding but what I saw was different. Before starting over, I clicked start preclear, saw the word starting with a red x, but it never moved beyond that. After usb reformat, it began to show status and progress with the red x Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
  11. I wound up wiping/reformatting the usb drive and starting from scratch. Seems fine now
  12. Brand new server build with fresh but used drives that need to be wiped clean. Preclear sticks at "starting", but never actually seems to be doing anything. I followed the spaceinvader video, which does not seem to reference installing a script so I haven't, but the support thread does? I have removed and reinstalled the plugin as well as rebooted the entire server. I know this is something stupid but I'm about 24 hours into trying to figure it out on my own. 13. Chiming in because I think I'm following a similar path, and I actually bought the chassis from the ebay seller linked above. Here is what I settled on, most of which will be on my doorstep in the next few days. I never declared an official budget, but did enough research to convince myself I wasn't paying top dollar. Would like to get this done sooner rather than later to address some issues with current computers, so I wasn't willing to wait for deals on every last part. Already have HDDs, so all in I'm around $895 for a box that will someday run sage, plex, crashplan, and unifi dockers, 2 Windows VMs for sure, NAS, and whatever else tickles my fancy. It will replace 3 other computers, a daily driver in the kitchen, the sage server, and a WHS box that currently is NAS and backs up the sage box.2x Xeon e5-2660 v2 CPUs, 10 cores and 2.2ghz each- ebay seller ESISO $270SuperMicro x9dri-LNF4+ and 32gb ECC- Mrrackables $325 (very good experience with a phone in order because I had some questions. Guy was even willing to share some thoughts on dumb questions that had nothing to do with what I was buying. Highly recommend)SuperMicro 3U SC835BTQ-R1K28B- 8 hotswap bays, 7 full size expansion slots, 2x 1280 watt PSUs- CSE-SAS-833TQ backplane- ebay $300 incl shipping at 57lbs (might sell off one of the PSUs if its not required, also no idea what a backplane even does, thought i would be connecting SATA straight to the mobo, so maybe i can sell that too. I'm sure this will sound like a thousand hair dryers, but it can be modded plus will be in a basement dungeon anyway)
  14. Strike two for me on motherboard purchase (first was before i knew I wanted UnraidOS). Researched for weeks then finally settled on a SuperMicro x9DRi-LNF4+ with the help of MrRackables. Didn't catch the guy's name, but he was very helpful and patient with me, as this is my first build and I'm making this up as I go. I saw that it was EE-ATX, but I have chased down weird formats of things before and didn't think it would be a big deal. Board is on its way I think, but now I am discovering that this is apparently a proprietary SM format that will fit only SM chassis. I will try to catch them later today to see if they can hold off shipping. I have looked into things like the SM 745TQ, but i wasn't planning on spending $300+ on a case. Size/appearance don't matter as it will live in a basement dungeon. Noise isnt too important either, but I don't want a 747 taking off. Any other options for an EE-ATX board? I have posted my goals before, but this will primarily be used for SageTV and several extenders, media NAS to replace a WHS box, at least one Win10 VM for driver passthrough, and possibly another to replace a kitchen counter win10 terminal (long hdmi/usb runs). Have already purchased 2x e5-2660 v2, having convinced myself that they were the right price point but more power efficient than v1. Still probably way overkill, but I would rather spend a little more now not yet knowing exactky what all I want this thing to do, rather than realizing things will have to wait until the next overhaul (8 years since the last one).
  15. Thank you both. Great to know there is a reachable support community. Been about 8 years since I last homebuilt, but now I know what UEFI is. Fumbled my way through the Bios settings, and apparently up and running, just downloaded the trial key. Now it wants an "array". What's that?..... (j/k) Interestingly, it still doesn't like one of my flash drives, which is the same one I put in the old laptop that shouldn't have had UEFI issues. Grabbed another cheapo off the shelf that worked fine.
  16. Had hoped to make more progress than this before asking for help, but here I am. Attempting to install on an Asus STRIX z270h, have used 2 usb drives, each of which has a serial number (one Verbatim Executive metal 16gb, one Sandisk Relay 4gb). Both formatted to FAT32, renamed UNRAID, makeboot run successfully as admin on win10 machine multiple times, plugged into motherboard ports as opposed to front case ports. USB set to 1st boot device, even completely disconnected SATA windows drive. Nothing I have done results in booting to the usb drive. Also tried on an old Gateway laptop, didn't see the usb drive either. Has to be something simple, but I am out of ideas. Where do I start?
