  1. The pogoplug (about $20) with the basic/free level of service is a great deal. The recurring fees are for additional services (cloud storage on pogoplug's servers, additional users, offsite archival storage) that I don't need. The basic/free service allows you to make your own (virtually unlimited) cloud by plugging in a usb drive, or mounting an unraid share. You also get 5 GB of space in Pogoplug's cloud. With some work you can run SAB, SB, CP, and Transmission on the pogoplug thus reducing the number of plugins running on unraid. I figure the fewer plugins I put on unraid, the more stable the unraid server will be. The pogoplug only draws about 7 watts so I don't mind leaving it on all the time. I have no affiliation with pogoplug. There are things I don't like about the pogoplug software, but for $20 I'm a satisfied customer. This sounds like an interesting option. Which pogoplug do you recommend? They are ~$22 for version 2. It looks like Archlinux can be installed with Owncloud (giving similar back-up/cloud capabilties). If you could stick transmission/SAB/CP/SB on it, and it still runs decent, that could be a alternative. Does it do anything to help protect unRaid from the outside world?
  2. The 3TB is at $130 so it's actually a bit cheaper per GB
  3. options depend on your OS. Using Windows, for DVDs, I use DVDFab. I rip to DVD File structure (VIDEO_TS dir - esp if you want the menus and such). Depending on the quality I want (action movie vs drama/comedy/wife's movie) I will leave in that file structure or use Handbrake to compress to mkv. MakeMkv is nice for Blu rays as the file structure is much less friendly. Remember encoding to a compressed version sacrifices quality for space and the faster the processor, the faster the compression (you may not see the compression now but I don't want to re-rip things in the future). Here is a good write up of your popular options: http://lifehacker.com/380702/five-best-dvd-ripping-tools The main problem I have with mkv is that they don't easily play on the ipad. You have to get an alternate player or convert them to an Apple friendly format either on the fly (Air Video) or locally (depending on how you plan on using it). I think many of people have changed over to the mp4 for this reason. For playing, XBMC all the way. Raspberry Pi is nice but hard to beat a small form factor i3 for a pretty interface
  4. Thanks dga. I have a spare but it's not precleared. I will likely go ahead and preclear the spare and replace the current one (and then preclear that). If the Current Pending Sector goes to 0, would you feel comfortable continuing to use it (in the array or even spare)? I guess I could then keep an eye on it and if things start happening with it then It would get trashed. From what I was reading, Offline Uncorrectable is kind of the same thing. Should preclearing/rebuilding reset that to 0 as well? Thanks for the help.
  5. I'm really looking forward to this fix speeding_ant. Will it start reporting the Parity Check status as well as UPS status when the power goes out? Mine used to do this with the old unmenu setup, but now I only get the "unraid OK" emails. I'm running my monthly parity check right now and the only way I know that is by going to the gui. Again, looking forward to the new email notifications. Hi speeding ant - any update on when you will release the updated email notification package? Checking if there has been any update. I only just realized my logs were filling with these errors. Simplefeatures has otherwise been terrific.
  6. I was transferring files to unRaid just now and I noticed rates peaking and dropping a lot more. On opening the web interface I see 254 errors on disc 4 (where I was copying to). I was hoping I could get some suggestions on what to do with this drive. Smartctl passes without error. No errors are logged on the disc in the 5.0b web interface, but smartctl it looks like 5 Reallocated Sector Ct 0x0033 200 200 140 Pre-fail Always Never 0 196 Reallocated Event Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old age Always Never 0 197 Current Pending Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old age Always Never 8 198 Offline Uncorrectable 0x0030 200 200 000 Old age Offline Never 1 Full logs attached. I was hoping someone could suggest what to do. The Uncorrectable bothers me and syslog is filling up with errors. Thanks for any suggestions. disk_attributes.txt syslog.txt
  7. sold out. These 3TB are going fast.
  8. Thanks RokleM. Totally forgot I used that years ago. Small, free and worked well. I assume it works fine on Win7. Mainly Documents/Pics backup. Nice to be able to access those directly rather than just restore from Crashplan.
  9. Any progress? Looking for an easy way to backup directories identically to unRaid from Windows. I currently use Crashplan but some of the stuff I would like in directory form and accessible. Automated is preferred but not necessarily realtime.
  10. Why even make it that complicated and worry about limited space? http://sparkleshare.org/ has been mentioned a little around here and seems to be advancing nicely. http://owncloud.org/ is something I found last week. Seems to be pretty far along with a lot of potential apps available too!
  11. Is that for internal? That's the going rate on the external online. For internals, it's hard to find a 2TB <$100, I'd say $150 is a very nice deal
  12. nice solution for the remote power on. I went the HTPC route myself. Converted an older SFF C2D with a newer fanless video card. Works great with USB-IRB (could never get power on by USB working). With an HTPC you could run it 24/7 with torrents and such if you don't want to put it on unRaid. If you are buying new, I second the AMD Fusions.
  13. this one specifically states NO PCI bracket. Can anyone confirm that those brackets are fairly standard? I have some old cards I could probably pillage.
  14. I recommend the Linux/BSD distros. Many work great on old hardware. Only cost is running the computer 24/7 (they may be able to be virtualized but I'm not that adept). Smoothwall, MonoWall, IPCop, pfSense are very nice. If you want more of a complete firewall, server, monitoring appliance, check out Untangle. It requires more modern hardware.
  15. Ditto all the above. over 36 hrs now since flashing the FW without any issues. Wish I had need of another one at this price.
  16. Thanks for this. I've been playing with diagnosing why my Windows box keeps BSODing randomly. My Agility3 seemed to correspond to the start of it.
  17. Or if you're fortunate to have a Microcenter around: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0305449 Trendnet TEG-S50G for $16.99
  18. Have been waiting for this for a week or so. Just FYI, Seems to be an increasing failure rate recently (33% give 1 egg in the last 2 weeks). Plus I'm hoping 3TB may be in the $100 ballpark by the holidays. hmmm
  19. It's the cheapest for a reason I think this was posted recently here, and I posted it on Slickdeals a few days ago too. I thought that might be what he was referring to. There was a report of someone getting the 64MB cache version. Still not sure if I should get it or not.
  20. It would be nice to know what the OP is talking about. Item? Price?
  21. OH, yeah. I was just curious since you didn't mention the need for RAM, and I wasn't familiar with XMB (I'm still not). that was supposed to be XBMC ... sorry for the confusion.
  22. What unit is this? Sorry, the original post: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856176002
  23. I just used some cheap $21 2GB RAM from NEwegg and it works great. Mwave has their Avexir 1x2GB DDR2-800 set for $15 shipped, I'm kinda bummed that I saw that deal after I ordered the other stick. I don't think this is still fr $130 though. EDIT: Looks like the deal is good till the 15th. looks to be sold out. $150 + drive ain't bad for XMB and smooth Blu-Ray. Being sold out saves me the decision.
  24. I replied in the other thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=13396.msg135990#msg135990
  25. I believe your directory on the cache drive needs to start with a "." Anything within that directory should be excluded from the mover script. ie /cache/.apps/sabnzbd
