  1. You're right, its rw-rw---- Sorry, I don't know where I got 755 from. I ran newperms on one file in bob's share folder, and bob could still read, write, move it, etc. So should I run newperms on his entire user share and replace the files that are currently owned by bob with ownership by nobody? When I create a file in bob's share using bob's Windows account on bob's PC, bob is the owner of that file. So which one is correct?!
  2. Hmmm... No. Mine were right around 38 hours and I was getting 70-80MB/s
  3. Files are being created by their associated users (bob and jane). All the newperms script does is change ownership to nobody:users and chmod 755 (I think). I'm just wondering if my user permissions will remain in tact (ie only bob can see his files, bob can see everyone else's files since he's the admin, etc) if I chown my entire array to nobody:users and 755....
  4. Those times and speeds are consistent with my preclears on the same model drive.
  5. I have a share named "bob" -- its my user share where I dump all my random stuff. Looking at it from the command prompt, some files are shown as "bob:users" and some are "nobody:users" Some are set to 775 for permissions, some to 755, some to 700, and some are 400, 404... Its pretty random. I created the share in unraid, gave "bob" read/write access, and proceeded to dump data there from my main workstation. Why such a mix of ownership and permissions? Should I 'chown' the entire structure to "bob:users" or "nobody:users?" And what should file permissions be set at? The share is set for no access to all users, but full access to "bob" in unraid. Same goes for other shares... Should user "jane" be the owner of all the files in her share, or nobody?
  6. Stupid question (probably), but if I have several SATA and two IDE disks in a system, and I later want to replace the IDE disks with SATA (when they eventually fail), are there any unforseen issues I need to be aware of now? Or is it as simple as taking out the IDE and adding another SATA and letting the array rebuild? Thanks
  7. I am about to upgrade a 2TB disk in my array to a 3TB disk. Is there a way to simply copy the data from the 2TB disk to the new disk, and then put the new disk in place of the old one, to avoid a rebuild? Add the new drive outside the array (after preclear of course), copy data, then swap new for old? I know the array will still freak out... But can this be mitigated with some simple commands? Seems a waste to have the data rebuilt from parity when it can just be copied over to the new disk...
  8. I have the same problem. Permissions are the bane of my existence.
  9. I also find the usual upgrade process to be a little... uncomfortable. And would welcome this as a solution!
  10. Anyone here have some time running WD Reds? I've read some forums elsewhere and posts here. Its time to add a drive. Are the WD Reds worth the $30 premium over the greens? Thinking about starting the swap to Reds now, but curious.
  11. Here is my dilemma. Somewhere in the process of installing the simple feature/sab/sb/cp plugins, the system became unstable. Reboots are a regular thing right now, services stopping on their own (or crashing, or whatever), slowness, poor network speeds, etc. I can either spend hours (days) troubleshooting, trying to figure out how to disable each one and then turn each one on one at a time until I find out what is causing the problem... And then troubleshooting once I find it (with God only knows how many dirty shutdowns and forced parity checks along the way) OR... I can research how to do a totally clean unraid install while preserving my user shares and data, and then build a cheap Windows XP machine to be my media downloader. I am infinitely more familiar with Windows, and my unraid server would (theoretically) not be so unstable. I'd really like to consolidate and run everything in the server, but I'm not willing to sacrifice the uptime/reliability of my primary storage system for all my critical data. The sad thing is, everything is working fine except the regular breaking in the web interface. Maybe install unmenu again?
  12. Apologies, but what do you mean "remove my user shares?"
  13. I hit it with my browser, got the username/password login (so it was paying attention for a second) and now its timing out (never loaded so much as a single pixel). SAB/CP/SB are all responding. Just not unraid (off a fresh reboot)
  14. Installed it. Ran it, got this: -- root@ffs1:/sbin# ./powerdown Capturing information to syslog. This will mark the fourth reboot-caused parity check in six days. Should I be looking at re-installing unraid at this point? Uptimes haven't exceeded 72 hours since I installed the sab/sb/cp packages.
  15. Well, its running... but not "listening" -- telneting to port 80 yields nothing, and it times out in any browser I try. This happens at least once a week... And in the past I've had to reboot. How can I begin troubleshooting this? Might something be written in the syslog? I make it a habit to log in to unraid at least once a day to check disk status. Having to reboot once a week is becoming old
  16. I am running Simple Features. SAB/SB/CP are accessible from their web interfaces. Unraid is not. This happens frequently. How do I kill/restart the unraid web-based management from the command line when using Simple Features?
  17. I have two shares: /mnt/user/movies (exported as "movies") /mnt/user/tv_shows (exported as "tv_shows") SB downloads shows and CP downloads movies. But how does SB know to put movies in the movies directory etc? And its not creating season folders in the tv_shows share. In fact, I have a "movies" directory in the "tv_shows" share and all of my content is downloaded there... mostly unorganized (in directory names called "show_season_episode"). I thought I'd seen folks online with show/season/episode/files as their structure, which is what I'm trying to do... Anyway, there are permissions things going on apparently as I have to use chown/chmod from the command line to move content around to the proper place (can't do it from Windows explorer) and moving a file with a ton of strange characters in it (like you get with usenet downloads) means it takes me hours by hand to organize my stuff.
  18. Well, it doesn't appear to have made a difference. SAB is unpacking one file, and I am transferring 2GB from my workstation, and top is showing 8.68, 5.54, 3.95 So I guess its time for a newer/faster CPU. Only question is, what matters most... Number of cores, speed of cores, or size of L2/L3?
  19. I used modprobe and the other commands here to set things to "performance". Is this a one time thing or do I need to put this in my boot up scripts?
  20. Thanks Frank, this actually make a lot of sense now. The split level is the actual depth in the directory tree at which a split across disks is allowed to take place. That makes perfect sense. I don't know why all the drawings, manual, and posts were so confusing. Maybe I needed to have it compared to my own directory structure as you did so I could get it. Awesome, thanks. And in simple features I think my only option is "save" when I change the split level... Could be wrong though but I'll check when I get home. Should it be possible to change the split level of an existing share to a lower depth (higher number)? And that will have the effect of beginning to spread more data around more disks on future copies to that share? Hopefully I am getting this right. Final question... Should I decide to simply redo my shares completely, and have a "tv" and a "movie" share separately, instead of nested in a "media" share as I do now... Can I just move the contents of each directory in my existing share over to a temp share (I have a share called "temp" with a split level of 999)? And then move the contents back into their new shares? And that will start the allocation/split level process right off the bat? In a situation like that, are the old/empty directories on the server, that are no longer even part of a defined share, cleaned up automatically, or will I need to address each physical disk by hand and clean up?
  21. I appreciate the reply. I have read your thread with great interest and may give it a shot. Sab is really the worst part of my otherwise superb unraid system right now, and ever since I installed it, things somewhere have been broken in one way or another. I can't get it to save downloads where I want, it has a mind of its own. Perhaps its best if I switch for something better and lighter weight. But just as a point of curiosity, will unraid (and the "usual" add-ons everyone seems to use) benefit from more cores or faster cores? If you could have four 1GHz cores, or two 3GHz cores, what would be ideal? And how about L1/L2/L3? Athlon II X2s, X3s, X4s, and Phenom II X2s, and X4s are cheap enough on Ebay right now that an extra $20 or so could get you more cores, more speed, or more L2/L3.... Just wondering which should be taking priority.
  22. I'll look into the governor issue, thanks. Any time I've looked at specs under unraid its reported 1.6Ghz tho. But I'll check into that further. I'm using cache dirs. For the past four days, none of my disks have spun down, ever. I don't know if Sab is keeping them spinning or what. I have a cache drive and my spin down delay is set at 15 minutes for all member drives. So theoretically they should be spinning down, but they're not. The share I was trying to work with while Sab was eating my system for lunch had seven top level directories in it, and several hundred thousand files nearing 3TB in many tens of thousands of directories under those seven top level ones, all nested at various levels. But beyond that, everything else on the system is slow too. Couch Potato's web interface often simply doesn't load at all (I just stare at a grey background) until I refresh the browser one, two, three times. Sickbeard always seems to load, interface-wise, but doing stuff in it is slow. Sab feels like I'm trying to run Windows 3.0 on a 286. I see the yellow block loading animation on the main download screen a lot. The main unraid web interface (simple features) is relatively speedy but I definitely notice when Sab is doing something. Interactively, from a shell prompt, the system is fast.
  23. I've been through the Split Levels section of the manual, and sometimes I get it more, and sometimes it confuses me more. I still have trouble understanding how it works. Right now my share looks like this: media\movies\movietitle\moviefiles media\tvshows\tvshowtitle\episodes (I am still fighting to get Sab to save to season folders) Everything is set at Split Level 2. I tried to switch it to 3, and 4, but it wouldn't change from 2. According to what I've seen in the manual, I am thinking of creating two new shares: movies\movietitle\moviefiles tvshows\tvshowtitle\episodes\episodefiles If I do this, should I do 2 for the movies and 3 for the tv shows? Or 1 and 2? On another note, if I have a positively huge folder full of misc files that need sorting (3TB+, tens of thousands of folders, six to ten levels deep), what split level should I be using to get the most out of my storage space? The manual says that I can set the Split Level to a ridiculously high number (999?) and that will essentially disable split levels... What does that mean exactly? What about level 0?
