Can you provide some evidence that it is indeed using that much RAM? Just to make sure there isn't some misunderstanding. Maybe you are just seeing I/O buffer.

I'm not sure what to provide here. What kind of evidence do we need? I can stream multiple streams at once with the RAM usage hardly being affected. But the RAM will be 99% used when there are no active streams. A simple restart of the docker takes the RAM back to normal.

The usual reason for a docker to fill RAM is if it has a mapping that doesn't correspond to actual storage. But I don't see anything like that in your mappings in that screenshot. That screenshot isn't showing them all though. The docker run command would give the full picture.

Plex doesn't normally write to anything but its appdata and its transcode path.

And your screenshot does have the appdata mapping hidden. What is the appdata mapping?

Where do you have the transcode folder set in the application?

Sorry about that. Here's the whole thing.

  3. I'm using Sonarr and Radarr for TV and movies with Plex for playback. I've noticed that after my downloads finish unpacking, it can take 20 minutes or more before they show up in Plex (even when initiating a manual library scan).

After investigating, I noticed that the files are being moved to their respective folders for TV and Movies and they will only show up in plex when the move has completed. But this move is taking a long time.

Is there a setting to make this work better in SAB, Sonarr, or Plex? Or maybe it's an unraid mover issue? I've got a cache pool setup with 2 SSDs.

PLEX SERVER UNREACHABLE AFTER RYZEN 9 UPGRADE

Today I upgraded from an old AMD processor to a Ryzen 9 3900x and a ASrock x370 Professional Gaming Motherboard. I got everything up and running, but Plex is acting strangely, Selecting the webui shows the server as unreachable. Sometimes I can access the plex server from my phone or Nvidia shield on the local network momentarily and then it drops again.

Any idea what could be going on?

UPDATE: Now clicking on Webui from the docker no longer takes me to plex admin. It's just showing "site can't be reached"

    Quick update...

It turns out that I was apparently not running the linuxserver docker of plex, but rather the Plexinc version.  That's a tidbit I found out after removing the docker to try reinstalling. So anyway, I attempted to reinstall with the linuxserver version, but I was getting an error saying my certification has expired and it wouldn't pull the docker.

Poked around on google and unraid forms and found out that error can come from an incorrect date/time setting. Upon checking, my date and time setting had been set to the date on which the updated bios had been released (Aug 3, 2019). So I manually corrected the date/time and the docker pulled and installed correctly.

My guess is that my problems with the original plex install were likely related to this too, but it's too late since I deleted it.

All the appdata is showing up correctly, but I had to re-add the libraries before it would play any of the content correctly becuase the linuxserver distro uses path mapping.

    So that was fun!

  5. You know those times when you want to throw your computer against the wall and light it on fire? That's been my experience the last 24 hours.

Newegg was supposed to have their ASrock x370 boards updated to the new bios by ASrock, but apparently mine slipped through the cracks. So my board had a bios that was not compatible with Ryzen 9. But it took hours of troubleshooting to rule out other things first. After calling 6 computer repair shops in town, I found one who had an old beater Ryzen in the shop specifically for upgrading bios for series 3 ryzens.

So now everything is back up and running EXCEPT my plex server has decided to become invisible. Clicking on the Webui link on the docker takes me to a "Page Not Found". Clients can't find the server either. No idea what caused it and no idea how to fix it.

    AMD has a loaner program.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I wasn't trying to get it up and running quickly, I'd try it out.

I just installed the MB, Ryzen 3900x, and RAM this afternoon with an old PCIe graphics card. I thought there was a chance that the motherboard had come with the 5.3 bios from the factory since the update was released in July. Unfortunately there's no way to tell.

The computer won't post and get stuck in a boot loop. Starts up for 20 seconds (no video output) then resets and starts up again.

I don't know if this is due to the 3900x not being compatible or if there's another problem. Maybe the ram? It's not listed on the official asrock compatibility list.

I've ordered a Ryzen 3 that is compatible with all bios of this motherboard so that I can update the bios if that's the problem. But I'm not sure that it is.

  8. Hey All, I've been using unraid since version 4 (I think), but I've always kind of fumbled through my setup. A couple years ago, I did some skype sessions with @jonp and it was very helpful! Not sure if Jon is still doing them.

I'm upgrading my motherboard/processor and I thought this would be a good time to get everything working in tip top shape.

Some things I'm hoping to get help with...

    1. General settings/share/app optimization

    2. Sabnzbd/Radarr/Sonarr/Plex (Optimize)

    3. Switch from Reiserfs to XFS

    4. Setup Next Cloud

    5. Setup a Windows VM
    6. Setup Windows VPS (is this possible?)

Anyway, would love some help optimizing my unraid experience!

This combination is most likely not compatible out of the box, you will need an older AM4-CPU to upgrade the bios or you ask your dealer to flash the bios for you.

As for memory I would recommend this kit: https://www.newegg.com/ballistix-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820164110

Oh shoot. I already ordered it. Stuff started arriving today. Is there something in the description that would have alerted me that it’s not compatible?

    i don’t have another AM4 processor.

Take a screenshot as a backup. But the order of disk serial are kept on the USB drive for unraid. 99% of the time if you wire up everything properly and everything is seen properly it will just work. If you are doing anything with IOMMU passthrough with hardware for vms you'll need to do a bit of resetup there otherwise you are set.

Ok, cool. So you're saying that I shouldn't have to select disks from the drop down and manually setup the array? It'll just boot up and probably start the array correctly?

  11. Next week I'm upgrading my processor, motherboard, and RAM (see this post for details). I'm trying to learn how to keep my 6 drive array (5 data + 1 parity) safe during the upgrade.

I'll be using the same case, so I won't need to physically move the drives or anything. Currently all my drives are plugged into SATA ports on the motherboard and the new motherboard has enough SATA ports for all the drives, so I'm good there. But how do I make sure that each drive gets assigned correctly? Do I just take a screenshot of the dashboard page of unraid and carefully select the right drives?

  12. Ok, so according to this thread  post 2015 CPUs in general (not just Intel QSV processors) can handle 4K h265 much better than in the past. So it takes only a 8000 passmark score to transcode 4k h265 with most recent CPUs.

I hope I'm correct in my evaluation?

Since this no longer locks me into an Intel chip here's what I'm now thinking.

    AMD RYZEN 9 3900X (31,930 passmark)

ASRock Fatal1ty X370 (This gives me 10 SATA ports in case I need 2 extra in the future)

    How does this combo look?

Ok for 4k and Virtual Machines?
    Any Ram recommendations?

    430w Power Supply ok?

    EDIT:

    For RAM maybe...

    G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 3200

Gives the option to upgrade to the motherboard max of 64gb if needed.

  13. I'm doing an end of year upgrade to my server that is partial used for business purposes (hence getting the expense in for 2019) and I've got $2500 to spend.

    Required Performance/Improvements

    1. Ability to transcode 4k for remote playback.

    2. Support for Virtual Machines and Remote VPS Servers

    3. Ability to add on functionality for remote file server with multiple users like  NextCloud or something.

    4. Increased storage. Will be loading up with a lot more 4k content.

    5. Optional: Improved file redundancy.

    CURRENT SPECS

    Motherboard: Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H

    CPU: AMD A8-5500 APU w/ Radeon™ HD Graphics @ 3200
    Ram: 8GB
    PS: CX430M
    Cache Drives: 2x Samsung 850 500gb SSDs
    Array Drives: 6x 8TB WD80E (5 Disk + 1 Parity | 9.31TB of 30.7TB Free)

    Notes:

    • Hard drive bays are full
    • Was thinking of starting the process of upgrading to 12tb drives
    • Would like to keep the case if possible.
    • Would like to offload 4k transcoding to GPU or QuickSync CPU (don't want the CPU overloaded if someone is streaming transcoded 4k)
    • Motherboard upgrade necessary?
    • Non work video playback is all through Plex.

That was a great primer @Hoopster. If I was following that to the letter, I wouldn't even be bothering to find a solution to decode/encode/transcode in 4k. If that's true (and I follow that advice) what is the benefit of having a 4K capable processor?

If I was following that primer to a T, the simplest thing for me to do would be to get an Nvidia shield, yes?

The bigger issue is that Plex does not currently handle 4K HDR content very well. Colors are washed out and faded.

Oh yeah, that is a big issue. So any time Plex transcodes h265 4k to h264 4k, it would lose the HDR and get washed out, right? That's a bummer because most of my content is ripped in HDR.

Unraid Nvidia is a custom build of Unraid made by the LinuxServer.io team. Note that while it is unraid, it is customized and therefore not directly supported by LimeTech. This post covers how to install and use it.

The next tidbit about my script for the nvdec wrapper - it's actually extremely easy to use - you just add it as a userscript using the CA userscripts plugin and set it to run after your normal updates:
    https://github.com/Xaero252/unraid-plex-nvdec

    And finally, as far as choices with VMs;
VMs can get a little nasty with this setup. For one, if you decide to pass the nvidia GPU to your VM - docker will lose control of it until the VM is stopped, at which point any containers that want to use it will need to be restarted to see it again. If you wanted to use an nvidia graphics card for virtualization pass thru you'd typically want a Quadro card - although newer consumer cards are a bit easier to get working.

I'd also wait until other users respond to this thread, as their opinion may be different than mine - and it is important to weigh your options before comitting to a significant expenditure.

For example, a capable intel CPU with 4k QuickSync support and board may be similar in price in your area to a GPU. If this is the case, QuickSync is far superior to nvdec/nvenc, and you won't be passing that part of the CPU through to any containers. If you can cheaply obtain a GPU it is more affordable/effective to just add a GPU to your existing setup.

So to somewhat retract on my previous statement ( I hastily posted without considering locale )  - if it's cheaper to buy a GPU and add it to your current system - I'd go that route. If it's cheaper or the same price to go intel and get a CPU that supports QuickSync 4k transcoding - I'd go that route. My system does not have QuickSync support, and I often wish it did, as that would free a PCI-E slot or this GPU for passthru.

Ok, this is starting to make sense. Thanks for laying it out like that.

I'll admit that I'm a little intimidated about reinstalling a custom version of unRaid. I've been using unraid for 9 or 10 years, but I'm still a little shakey with the technical maintenance. Would replacing the motherboard and CPU require a fresh install?

I wonder... would I run into problems using and Nvidia card on an AMD chipset if I went the unraid-nvidia route?

I'll wait to see if a few more people would like to chime in, as you suggested.
