Red X on drive 4 after parity check - error code: aborted

Featured Replies

So as stated I have a red x on drive 4 of a 5 device array  - I have a replacement drive ready if needed but am not sure how to proceed - do I just stop the array  -  then power down the server   - replace questionable drive with new drive  - then reboot  and let unraid do its job or is there more to it?

thank you in advance for all your help

Since there was no SMART report in your attachment, probably the disk has disconnected. But get us diagnostics, preferably before rebooting.

is this the correct diagnostics

yes

Why are you running such an old version of Unraid? (we hate trying to work with those old diagnostics 😉)

Looks like disk4 and both cache have disconnected. Do these have anything in common, controller, power cable?

Seems like these would have been reason enough to update

Jul 24 04:30:03 Server root: Fix Common Problems: Warning: community.applications.plg Not Compatible with Unraid version 6.7.2

Jul 24 04:30:06 Server root: Fix Common Problems: Error: Vulnerable Unraid Version

They are all on this controller?

01:00.0 SATA controller [0106]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9230 PCIe SATA 6Gb/s Controller [1b4b:9230] (rev 11)
Subsystem: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9230 PCIe SATA 6Gb/s Controller [1b4b:9230]

We usually don't recommend Marvell but if it has been working maybe OK.

Have you recently enabled VT-d ? That sometimes breaks things with Marvell.

what is VT-d?  I just run plex and then also use to back up my computers with synctoy  that's about it sorry for the old version of unraid I am from a age of if it aint broke dont fix it plus she has been running great for a couple years

Allows you to pass hardware to a VM

yes the controller is the common link  but it looks like the cache is fine from dashboard - should I fix the drive first and then upgrade to new version of unraid or upgrade first and then fix drive its been a few years since I built this thing and have forgot a ton

That is not the Dashboard. Diagnostics say otherwise.

fix the connections for disk4 and both cache. Are any other disks on the Marvell?

You might want to replace that controller before upgrading. Marvell are notorious for neglecting their Linux drivers.

is there a new link with directions to either replace the existing hard drive or try to see if it comes back online - it looks like this has happened before to me and someone posted a link with instructions but the old link give a 404 error now

any recomendations for a cheap controller that can handle 8 drives

thank you, so I ordered this - I have yet to touch my server since I dont want it to crap out - I have also ordered an HGST Ultrastar (HUS726060ALE610) 6TB as while I'm doing all this upgrading I would like to upgrade my Parity drive to 6tb as I understand this will allow me to increase my allottable drive size in the array. sorry if this is bothersome but I do apricate your help

thanks Ill let you know when the controller arrives - in the mean time should I just leave the server running , spin down the drives, or stop the array or leave well enough alone until the controller arrives

The ASM1064 can only manage 4 SATA by itself, so that card most certainly uses a port multiplier.

It is NOT recommended as stated in the link above.

sorry for the noob question but is it just a matter of powering down the unit and installing the new controller or do have have to keep the sata cables in a certain order?

The SATA cable order is irrelevant as Unraid recognises disks by their serial numbers.   If the news card reports serial numbers the same as the old one then everything  should ‘just work’.   If they are reported differently then s bit more is required (check back here if necessary).

can anyone tell if the drive is bad and needs replacing or was it the controller
