Can you get anything else to boot from USB?

  • Author

The only thing I did was unplug one of the SPF+ 10G Fiber cables and now it at least booted but still won't display anything beyond "Loading /bzroot... OK".

Do you mean you can access the webUI now?

  • Author

Yes I can access the Web GUI despite the display attached to the server stopping at "Loading /bzroot... OK".

Seems like something not working with your gpu if everything except the display is working.

It's a built-in VGA chip. I don't have a discrete GPU installed.  I am getting a picture.

What happens if you boot to memtest?

  • Author

Anytime I tried to run memtest in the past with the old board, the PC just rebooted but I'll try now.

  • Community Expert

You can't boot memtest UEFI.

See if you can download and boot memtest86 from a different flash drive.

I have no issues booting a Windows SSD so it must be something else. Also an old install of TureNAS also boots.

Apparently Unraid does not like this motherboard's onboard VGA chip as when I used a discrete GPU Unraid booted with all the screen activity I was expecting to see.

Is there anyway of fixing that issue?  It's not a big deal as long as Unraid boots but it is rather annoying. I don't remember this being an issue in the past with this model motherboard.

Looks like you have the following

29:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ASPEED Technology, Inc. ASPEED Graphics Family [1a03:2000] (rev 41)
Subsystem: ASPEED Technology, Inc. ASPEED Graphics Family [1a03:2000]
    Kernel modules: ast

I have a and it works ok.

[1a03:2000] 04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ASPEED Technology, Inc. ASPEED Graphics Family (rev 30)

What info does modinfo ast show?

I had no issue with this part on the original ASUS Pro WS WRX80 SAGE WIFI SE using the VGA chip so not sure why it won't work with the replacement ASUS sent me.

Great News. To fix a different issue with the onboard SATA ports not working I was asked to add "pci=realloc=off" behind "initrd=/bzroot" which has the unexpected excellent side effect of showing all the booting text when plugged into the onboard ASPEED VGA port.

I now consider this issue solved. Thank you everyone for trying to help me figure this out. I really appreciate it.

I have the same problem.

The solution of "Great News. To fix a different issue with the onboard SATA ports not working I was asked to add "pci=realloc=off" behind "initrd=/bzroot" which has the unexpected excellent side effect of showing all the booting text when plugged into the onboard ASPEED VGA port. "  is utterly USELESS.

.

WHERE is this "added"?   Is this a command line?  Is this a file that is edited?  If so, what is the name of the file and where precisely on the flash drive is it located?  Or if it is a command then how does one bring up a console when booting off the flash drive?

If you're going to post a solution, but don't actually give necessary information regarding how the solution works,  then it is NOT a solution at all to anyone?

I came here hoping to find a solution, instead I find no help at all.  :(

To the syslinux menu, if you cannot boot you would need manually edit the file.

On a phone now but can post more details later if needed.
