NFS Discussion

Ok, personally I miss the NFS feature a lot as I cannot play my HD files over SMB properly. Anyway I see another solution here. What about implementation of another protocols such as http or ftp which could also be used by Tvix? Are they fuse-friendly?

Some support for the NFS file system exists in the current release, but no web-based interface to manage it, nor any integration with "user shares"

It appears as if nfsd is compiled into the kernel

It is, I have verified it works. You can only export the disk shares directly.

A person also needs to install the NFS support programs.

nfs-utils-1.1.2-i486-1.tgz,  portmap-6.0-i486-1.tgz

According to the DOCS it supports SMB...

As another choice, There's a small program called WEBFSD that allows you to access a filesystem via HTTP.

Also you can install lighttpd or apache.

The iSTAR is a cool lil box if this is it.. http://www.istarhd.com/  Please verify.

Yes it is a cool box and the link is correct  8)

But would that not require me to keep my pc on to stream to my iSTAR ?

Not necessarily.

All tools have limitations, and certain combinations have different levels of compatibility and success, and conflict issues.

If you want to STREAM media content containers (MKV, avi, etc., not .ISO files) then HTTP is by far the best way to go.  With Apache/PHP and a good interface like OpenShowCenter, it works for not only media players, but also PCs.  People can browse and play movies through he HTML interface from their laptops, w/o mapping drives.  The vast majority of media players out there will work with it (Tivx is one of the minority).  I can even play movies at a friends house off of my nRAID server back here (as long as they are transcoded to a moderate bitrate in MP4).

If you want to rip movies to ISO files rather than transcode them to MKV or MP4, you can't stream them via HTTP.... you have to go NFS or SMB.  User Shares can't do NFS.  So if you require 1) .ISO files and 2) unRAID user shares, then your ONLY choice is SMB.... regardless of if you use Tivx or PH.

There are a LOT of options... what will work depends on some preliminary choices of those options.

If you bought Tivx, you can stick with it or change.  Your choice.  If you want to stick with it, then that limits some choices.  Tivx is a decent box, but it lacks some features of the PH.  PH, otoh, has more features, but also a few bugs that affect some people (for example, some posts on the PH boards complain about 16:9 PAL issues).

The job you want to do has to be selected before choosing the tool.
