When Tom, When that is the question

Hrm, this export feature could actually be pretty cool since all of my DVD rips are in folders labeled DVD on each drive. Then I'd just have to point to one share instead of to multiple ones or to the convoluted one I've made using Symlinks. I think I'll like this! This still isn't allowing us to see our drives as a single volume though so until and if that ever occurs we're still likely to have wasted space spread out in chunks across the various drives. <shrug>

Any performance tweaks in this upcoming release? Will we be on the latest or a later kernel? Any chance we'll be able to stop the array from taking over Master Browser duties? I've suspected that this has been occuring and recently spotted it being mentioned in my Syslog. I have anXP machine specifically setup to be Master so this is annoying - especially when one day I suddenly discover I cannot reach some machines by name and must reboot the array to straighten things out - doh!

P.S. Speaking or Recycle bins - any chance of implementing one? My Linkstation has this and while it's a pain to have to remember to empty it out occasionally to reclaim disk space it has saved my bacon at least once when, you guess it, someone deleted an entire directory structure without realizing it. The ability to have such a thing and to perhaps turn it on\off might be a nice feature to consider and I believe the Linkstation code is also GPL'd.

Tom,

When can we take the new code out for a spin?  ;D

I'm pretty new to Linux and with the new 'export' feature coming soon to unRaid I was wondering what the best way to modify my current server would be. For example, my movies are copied into shares as title/vobs. I understand that it would be best to have them structured like movies/title/vobs. Is there any command that I can issue that will create a new parent folder and then copy the movies into that new folder? I'm hoping that Tom or Joe L. might be able to save me a lot of work if this is possible.

Many thanks in advance!

There are two ways to organize your movies.

Method 1:

/disk<n>/Movies/<title>/...

Method 2:

/disk<n>/Movies/disk<n>/<title>/...

Under the new User Shares feature, using either method you will see a single share called "Movies".  What you see when you click on Movies will either be all your moves on all your disks in one large directory (method 1), or a set of subdirectories "disk1", "disk2", etc. of all the disks which have movies on them (method 2).

The advantage of method 1 is that all your titles show up in one convenient directory.  The disadvantage is that the top level Movies directory will be read-only, and you won't be able to directly copy another movie to that share.  Instead you will have to pick one of the disk<n> shares, copy the title to the Movie directory there, and then go to the Managment Utility and click a "ReScan" button.  (ReScan will rebuild the Movies share.)

The advantage of method 2 is that you will be able to write to the individual Movies/disk<n> directories.  The disadvantage of course is that the disk<n> directories are in all the movie paths.

Myself, I'm currently using method 1 because eventually we'll be able to make the top level Movie folder writeable.

Now as to how to reorganize things - well that's easy.  Let's say your current organization is like this (as I understand you saying it is):

disk<n>/<title>/...

Navigate to a disk<n> share and create a new folder named "Movies".  Now select all your titles using the mouse and drag them into the newly created Movies directory - it's just that simple.

Umm, Tom, so when you say imminent, is that measured in people time or Geologic time?  ::)

Tom was shooting to have beta testers for today/tomorrow. Yesterday he said he was writing up the documentation. I am betting that it taking a bit longer because he said he is going into detail how to change the goscript to allow SATA and IDE mix.

Hopefully we will see it tomorrow...

Thanks Mike!  I got a great well-needed chuckle out that!  ;D

Status is this: The software is done and I'm currently updating the website. There are A LOT of changes.  A couple of things are getting in my way, like the need for at least 4 hours of sleep, and also some pesky person keeps bugging me about stuff... who is that?? oh yeah, the wife...

The plan is that I'll post an announcement just as soon as there's enough content on the website to permit beta testers to proceed.

Tom.

No problem, just letting everyone know what you communicated to me yesterday. Can't wait to check out the new goods!!

Thank you,

Mike

Tom, gimme a ring if you need some beta testing by a bulb in the closet bright enough to figure out mixed PATA/SATA Go scripts (been running some somewhat complex configs for months).

Awesome news.. I am ready to test. :)

umm....  ???
