replacing flash drive

Featured Replies

I'm trying to replace my flash drive since my old one is now to small, it's 2 gig and 15years old and I can't update it anymore.  My new one is a 32gig Kingston. I've tried the USB creator but it keeps tell me it's not bootable.  I ran the make bootable script from my Mac but still not working.  Any idea what the issue might be other than I'm doing something wrong

Yes- There's an option in the creator to install from a backup.

and

Yes- you can install then copy over your config directory.

Top is easier.

So I can't seem to get the new drive to boot.  it either says "No boot drive detected" or I can get it to where I can pick to launch Unraid and it counts down 5 seconds but it seems to get stuck in a boot cycle and won't boot, just keeps counting down 5 seconds then repeats.

That sounds like a bad USB stick or port.  Are you able to change either or both?

Alternate shot, try reseating your memory.

Port and memory are fine, the old flash drive works fine and boots right up.  I've tried two different newer USB sticks and both give me the same same issue.  Any recommendation for a USB stick?  The old one is 2gigs and 15 years old, the new ones I've tried are both 32gig and USB 3

USB2 in USB2 port

I like the Samsung Bar.  Have one of those and a fairly new Cruzer fit that hasn't given me any issues.

Get a full size, not a small thing... this is better for heat.  Spend a little extra for the name brand too.

Think I saw a psa somewhere that SanDisk sticks may be prone to counterfeits, not sure what the deal is with those.

you think the problem is using a USB 3 in a USB 2 port?  I never even thought of that.  I did just order a new Samsung Bar 64gig but it's also USB 3.  I will also double check my BIOS settings

USB2 port is more reliable whether you use USB3 or USB2 stick

ok maybe I'm doing something wrong because I still can't get it to boot.

I make the drive with the creator tool then I run the Make Bootable file for Mac since that's the computer I'm using and then eject the drive and install it in my server.  When it asks for the admin password I assume it for my Mac and not Unraid correct?   The old drive boots up fine but the new one isn't.  Any idea?

Or could I delete everything in the LOG and PREVIOUS Folders to clean up some space?

You can, but that should be unrelated to the boot issue

yeah I know it has nothing to do with the boot issue, just trying to get to 7.0.

You can also try recreating the flash drive, first backup the current one, then recreate it with v7.0.0 using the USB tool, confirm the flash drive boots with the stock install, and if yes, restore only the /config folder from the backup overwriting any existing files.

Will this save all the settings for dockers and plugins also

All of your configuration is in the config folder on flash, including docker templates, plugins, and anything else in the webUI.

Hi everyone,

I need a bit of help, please. I'm encountering an issue on one of my servers. Occasionally, I get an error stating that my USB is failing. When trying to update to Unraid 7, I receive the following message:

"The upgrade failed, but no changes were made to your configuration. Your USB Flash is likely failing."

I tried using a different USB and created a new one using the USB creator. I pulled the backup from the server and copied the data over to the new USB. However, I'm still getting the same error when attempting to update.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

You could also try downloading the zip file for the release and extracting all the bz* type files overwriting the ones on the flash drive.   This sometimes seems to help although there is no obvious reason why it should be needed.
