April 14, 201214 yr I have a bunch of Western Digital Greens (21 of them to be exact) with uncompressed BDs on them. Lately, there has been stuttering where the movie chops up and I lose sound for about 3-4 seconds before it fixes itself. This does not happen with my TV shows, which are also uncompressed BDs. The only difference is my TV show drives are 70% full, and my movie drives are 99% full which is 25GB of free space on 2TB drives. Can this cause it? Should I move a movie or two off each drive to another drive? How much free space do I want on each drive? Thanks.
April 14, 201214 yr It's possible but unlikely. Used to keep 10% free but with todays large drives I think 5% should be ok. Do all the movies stutter or just 1 or 2?

All recent movies that i've watched, it's rare.. it could stutter once every 5 minutes or never. If I rewind it doesn't do it again, so it's not the source.
April 14, 201214 yr Utter rubbish. I have drives with only a few MB (sometimes KB) free and no problems playing anything. I have 20 drives full of 1:1 Blu-ray rips. It's a ridiculous concept that has been mentioned here several times and I have no idea why it has gained traction. I don't write to user shares, only disk shares, but I still don't think it'd make any difference. The reason why you'd want to keep free space on a drive in the past is if you want to defragment it. There's no need (or even tools?) to defrag ReiserFS drives.
April 14, 201214 yr Sounds more like a network issues or an issue with buffering on the playing device. How is the playing device connected? check network status (errors on interface)... if you are connecting via WiFi, is someone microwaving at the time of stuttering (or near that time)? Check path from Device to WiFi AP (if metal objects in the path, or other thick items like concrete walls, try to change the location).

How do you copy files to your server? I have 6 drives varying from 96-98% full and I'm unable to use Windows or DOS to copy files from my Windows 7 x64 machine to my UnRAID server. I also only use disk shares and the copies repeatedly time out. It used to work on the second try every time but now that I don't have at least one disk less than 80% full, it doesn't seem to work at all. Preclearing a new drive now just so I can move files off my Windows drive. There are several threads on this issue regarding copies from Windows to UnRAID already but it doesn't seem to be getting much notice.

First of all you need to get a true read of the free drive space. I telnet to the server and type (for example): df /mnt/disk1 That'll show how much free space there is in KB. I then look at what I want to move over -- I use Treesize Pro to show me folder sizes in KB also. Then I pick something to move over, leaving a little space free -- a few MB or maybe even a GB or two. Generally, I'm moving stuff from the cache drive to an array drive (I don't use the mover script, I prefer to do everything manually so I don't end up with files scattered all over my drives) so I use midnight commander to move from /mnt/cache to /mnt/disk1 If you can't copy from Windows, check that the files you are copying are not larger than the free space. If it is smaller, then you will need help from Limetech or one of the experts here.

I can definitely confirm that I'm well within the available free space on the drive since the file I'm trying to copy is a 4kB .nfo file! It's definitely a Windows and UnRAID not playing nice together type of issue. Since we can pretty much rule out Windows making any changes, it's up to UnRAID and like I've said, there hasn't been a lot of acknowledgment regarding the issue let alone who is responsible for it. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=18050.0 http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=16286.0
April 17, 201214 yr The only experience I have been able to reproduce several times is that it seems to take longer for unRAID to become available when coming out of spin down state when a drive is 100% full. Cleared up some space, problem disappears.

Cleared up some space, problem disappears. I used to think that was the issue before doing some limited trial and error to figure out that all disks were spinning and I was still getting the timeout. I haven't figured out if the problem is linked to the free space of the array or just the individual disks. I'm leaning towards the latter but I don't have any scientific evidence yet. I got so frustrated the other day that I couldn't copy an .nfo file to a drive until I figured out that I could create a new blank .nfo file, cut and paste the contents and then save the file without ever "copying". That was the only way I could write anything to this particular disk. I've since precleared a blank disk and plan to do some additional testing this weekend.
April 18, 201214 yr All my drives report as 100% filled with 16-20gb free space and the only time I have ever seen anything close to the issue you describe is when I was ripping and/or running clown_DB on a movie while watching another movie. The one thing I do regularly see, is that a movie will start and 5-10 seconds in will pause for 20 seconds or so then continue on with no issues. I'm fairly certain this only happens when the disc where the movie is located was sleeping before I start to play it.
