Failing drive

Featured Replies

I have a drive that suddenly became disabled

I tried to stop array, detach device, start array, stop array, assign device, start array so it rebuilds but it stays... disabled instead of building up again.

The drive is in a hot swappable cage... i switched them there, (same sata cable), but still the same..

Error in attachment

Its my newest drive, did it die?

What to do?

 • You are still having what looks like power/connection issues, or a controller problem, since the Marvel controller you are using, possibly a Supermicro SASLP, has not been recommended for many years n

 • Send you a private message over on the Belgian forum. There are some options from Germany which should work.

 • Since the disk itself appears to be completely dead, copy what you can from the emulated disk. For this one, if xfs_repair cannot fix the filesystem, you can try a file recovery app like UFS Explorer

Disk dropped offline, check/replace both cables and post new diags after array start.

 • Author

huh, very strange that cables get "damaged" by sitting there years..

The disk is via sata connected to the AOC-SASLP-MV8 expansion card.

Will try to connect other sata to the mobo instead, but i'll keep using the same power cord...

I replaced power and sata cable (disconnected pool disk and used those, so its not connected on the sas expansion card either), but its still disabled.

I stopped array, removed drive, turned on array, stopped array, added drive (assign), start array (so it builds up)

But again, it says disabled (with other power and sata cable)... it throws error again, new attachment

NO % building up again

If it fails cable why can i see the disk then to assign it?

but its still disabled.

This is expected, it always needs a rebuild after.

The syslog is being spammed with syslog server related errors; it's not correctly configured, so I cannot see the errors this time, but if you have replaced both cables and the disk has dropped again, it suggests a disk problem, try with a different one.

Crap

I swapped the drive, to do a final test and replaced disk 7 with 2

2 had the smart error report

7 is the one i couldnt bring it back to the array installed again

I shouldnt have done that.

After setting everything original, i get this:

Unmountable disks present:
Disk 2 • WDC_WD20EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WMAZA1502825 (sdd)
Disk 7 • WDC_WD60EZAZ-00ZGHB0_WD-WX71DC81PC3H (sdh)

i cant format those right or i will lose data ?

Anyway, i'm ordering 1 new disk probably 2 but they are so expensive nowadays (

I shouldnt have tried further..

Just thinking, if i buy 2x10tb now.. but my parity is 8tb

Is this doable now with those 2 disks failing without losing data?

Do you mean swap the cables/slots? Post new diags after the array starts, and don't format the disks.

Its doing a check filesystem status now (in maintenancemode)

Hope i can repair disk and then swap parity, and disk 7 with a bigger one

See attachment

Still going on after 2 hours

No diags.

i cant make diags if im in maintenance mode and the system check is still running...

I will as soon as i can get out of the test and maintenance mode

Please clarify exactly what was done; diags are after rebooting.

i swapped place disk 2 and 7

to test other cables too

Then both are failing

Unmountable disks present:
Disk 2 • WDC_WD20EARS-00MVWB0_WD-WMAZA1502825 (sdd)

That one had smart errors before

Disk 7 i cant add anymore its doesnt rebuild

I ordered 2x 10tb drives

Just swapping disk positions should not touch the file system unless there's some hardware issue. Post the output from blkid

 • Author

How do i do that?

Open a terminal window and type that command there.

Disk2 is not showing a filesystem signature, and it has pending sectors, so it could be failing. Run an extended SMART test and post the results.

ok so before i do that

Heres the situation

I got one 8tb parity

I got 2 disks failing

disk 7 is popping as unassigned, but i cant chose to assign

I can live with losing data on disk 2 (2tb)

I cannot live with losing data on disk 7 (6tb)

I would prefer losing no data

Today , 2x10tb disks are coming in so i can replace.

What do i do in what way? extended smart tests are running for both disks. Or do i need to buy another 6tb disk to save the data on disk 7 ?????????

Edited by skank

Those images are not working for me, you can attach any images directly to the forum

 • Author

ok here are the images

I found another 2 tb spare disk, though i'm not sure if it still works.

What can i do now, knowing i have a spare 2tb disks (not sure working), 2x10TB coming in today... and free hot swappable bays

2x smart reports still running

1.jpg

Should i be able to save disk 7 (6tb) or should i get another 6 tb drive...

If xfs_repair can't repair the filesystem, rebuilding the disks won't fix that. Once the SMART test finishes, reboot to clear the logs and post a new diags after array start.
