heffe2001
I'm using this same case at the moment, although I wish I had done a bit more research (I'd have gotten another 900 case, since the lower 6 bays are 5.25 in it, where the 300 is 3.5" down there). I've currently got the lower 6 bays full, and a 4-in-3 in the top bays (with only 2 drives at the moment). I need to change out my power supply, as it's a tri-rail, with 19a on each (and rail 3 isn't used at all with my configuration). I'm going to try to neaten up my wiring in the box as soon as the sata to molex adapters come in (I have plenty of SATA plugs on my power supply, but only 4 PATA, so using the 4/3 rack I have is problematic at best since it only uses molex plugs, and 3 of those are being used currently by my PATA drives...). WeeboTech
I need to change out my power supply, as it's a tri-rail, with 19a on each if you use the calculator on Corsair's website they will probably say this power supply is enough. The website says specifically - Triple 12V Rails provide independent reliable power to the CPU, video card and other components with a combined rating of 50A (40A on 520W) maximum! Advanced circuitry design that automatically enables power sharing between the triple +12V rails in an event of overload on any single +12V rail. >> Planned Expansion (on the off-chance that I might need more than 9 drives): Not sure you need all those parts. You could go with 5in3s in a good case and not have any outside wiring. So if you were to double check your power supply and needs, then consider the 5in3's and a new case, you could fit it all in one place. Quote Link to comment

Yep, know what you mean. I actually did do extensive research prior to buying the case, I just didn't place a lot of value on being able to use hot-swap bays. Now, I'm wishing I went with the Centurion 590 instead. I'm happy I opted for a modular power supply for my build. At least unneeded power supply cables are eliminated. >> Planned Expansion (on the off-chance that I might need more than 9 drives): Not sure you need all those parts. Going with 5-in-3's is actually a bit more expensive and with SoCal weather being what it is, I'm reluctant to dump my drives in such a cramped environment. Anyway, this is just on the off-chance that I out-grow 9 drives in the immediate future. I want to move to rackmount eventually and I'll probably dump the unRAID build to a Norco RPC-4020. I've already calculated power draw and my current 520HX should suffice. Quote Link to comment
heffe2001
Just re-arranged my drives, and installed the Adaptec card, and cleaned up the cabling a little bit. Looks much better than it did, that's for sure. I may end up using the 300 case for my dual Xeon (which might get re-purposed yet, just not 100% sure, lol) and replace it with a Antec 900 (although those Centurion cases are much cheaper, and look to have the same bay-setup, just without the 200+mm fan in the top). If I do that I'm definitely going to get a more suitable power supply (although this appears to be running fine, I had an odd problem on bootup after re-arranging where the 500g Pata didn't show up until I did restart after power-on, could be power related?). heffe2001
Yeah, I didn't until last week . Now if I could just find a rail/enclosure system that lets you adapt a 2.5" drive to a 3.5" slot that would work in my trayless box, I'd be set... Quote Link to comment

You might be better off selling that and putting the money towards a larger drive. It may slow down your monthly parity checks. (You do those right?) Quote Link to comment
heffe2001
I was thinking of using a 320 2.5" as a cache drive, plenty fast for that, and low power/heat . Quote Link to comment
WeeboTech
AS a cache drive it will do fine. And they are designed for many spinups over a lifetime. Quote Link to comment
heffe2001
It also appears to spin up much faster than my PATA 80g . Quote Link to comment

Don't you mean daily parity checks, lol? (For one reason or another, I've done one about every day this week, it's a great way to push the drives to see the max-temps, lol). Quote Link to comment
heffe2001
I've been having an issue where on a cold-start, one drive won't spin up, but a reset right after detection, they all spin up fine. I think I'm going to replace my existing power supply with a Corsair VX450, as their calculator says it should be good for my hardware, with up to 15 drives. The supply I have now doesn't do any sort of load-balancing between the rails (like the corsair's do), so I figure just replace it and I'll be good for a while (and Newegg has a 15.00 MIR on it right now). WeeboTech
NIce Lunatic, I did not even think about doing the cardboard blocking thing. Did you do the taping as suggested? How are your hard drive temps? Were the removables worth it in the end? (I think so!) It's a spiffy case with the removables. Thumbs up for the great pics! Quote Link to comment

WeeboTech, I used up every fan opening: 2 Top, 1 Rear with the 3x Cooler Master Neon Blue LED 120MM Case Fan 3PIN 22DBA. Pulled the fan from the drive bay enclisure and put that on the side and added the black case fan from the rear, to the side as well. On the other side, I taped the 80 mm grill and added cardboard to the 3 bottom bays in the front and under the powersupply Temps are at around 30C for the one drive that actually works. Have a look at this to see my problem: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2666.0 Removables are nice IF the drives work when you put them in Quote Link to comment
Rob_Esc
Lunatic, I like that rig. Looks cool with the blue LED's. (I'd RMA that clickng drive, though) A bit late, but here's some pics of my rig... You can see the Lexar Firefly mounted internally. I built a tray with some wheels to hold unRaid server and APC UPS unit so that I could tuck it away underneath the desk in my den. That's 108 watts idle with server, wireless router, DSL modem, and Netgear Gigabit switch all attached. Quote Link to comment

Koperfild
My new unraid box is now finished! I've built it around Sharkoon Rebel 9 Economy & Welland 5.25" hot-spare bays. The case is all covered inside with noise absorbing car mats. The hardware hasn't changed, it's still: Asus P5E-VM Do Celeron 420 1gig of ram BeQuiet SP E5 450W Here are the photos The case: Fixing the matts: The bays: Also, i used a special tape and stands which reduce vibrations: Cable Management: New member of the server: Which is dead after few days. NEVER buy just relased disks! Placing the disks inside: And today's mod. I decided to fix another 92mm fan to make the air circulation better. The one place i could fix it in was the place where you mount peripheral devices. For now it looks awfully because i insulated the fan with white acrylic paste. And...
