FolderView Plus Update: Major Feature, UX, Compatibility, and Safety Pass (v2026.03.10.11)

Since the original post, FolderView Plus has had a large overhaul focused on reliability, migration, and day-to-day usability on real Unraid systems.

Important: Conflicting Plugin Runtime Protection

- FolderView Plus now actively detects Folder View 3 and Folder View 2 runtime conflicts.

- If a conflict is detected, FolderView Plus enters safe mode:

- settings stay available

- Docker/VM/Dashboard runtime injection is paused (to prevent collisions)

- A clear banner explains what to remove and how to recover

- After removing the conflicting plugin and reloading, FolderView Plus resumes normal runtime behavior.

Migration + Legacy Compatibility (Permanent)

- Full compatibility retained for imports from:

- folder.view3

- folder.view2

- Legacy label keys and legacy config paths are still supported.

- Legacy import fixtures/contracts are now part of validation guards to prevent regressions.

Import/Export Overhaul

- Export files are pretty-formatted (readable JSON, not one-line blobs).

- Import flow now includes:

- preview + diff table

- operation selection (create/update/delete)

- modes: Merge / Replace / Skip existing

- optional dry-run (not forced by default)

- automatic pre-import safety backup

- compact progress UI for long imports

- new trust metadata in preview:

- Validated schema

- Legacy compatibility

- Validation warning

Settings + UX Improvements

- Cleaner Basic vs Advanced workflow.

- Setup Wizard significantly expanded (guided/expert flows, presets, review/summary improvements).

- Better table controls: status/health/updates columns, filters, compact chips, copy-id action, improved pin behavior.

- Improved no-data/fresh-install behavior (no more blank settings page).

- Multiple alignment/spacing/overflow fixes across Docker/VM/settings screens.

Icons + Customization

- Built-in icon picker improvements.

- Third-party icon library browsing support.

- Direct custom icon upload support (to plugin custom icons folder).

- Per-folder status color customization (started/paused/stopped).

Security + Reliability Hardening

- Stronger request guard coverage on mutating endpoints.

- Improved sanitization and safe external-link handling.

- Safer runtime behavior and defensive conflict handling.

- Better diagnostics/support bundle flow.

Performance + Validation Pipeline

- Advanced settings data now lazy-loaded for faster first render.

- Expanded browser smoke coverage (Chromium + Firefox + WebKit).

- CI/release guards extended (legacy support guard, API contract checks, i18n/theme/perf/repro checks, install smoke, release validation).

If anyone tests this on a fresh install, legacy migration, or mixed plugin history, feedback is welcome in this thread.

Excellent. It is fantastic to see this plugin grow and grow...I'm proud to brag that I art directed the ORIGINAL plugin design (it wasn't even called FolderView) many many years ago.

I am currently on the FolderView2 version. I have made EXTENSIVE tweaks to the UI CSS... is this still supported? I would hate to start from scratch to get the look and feel I want. A mini guide for this would be greatly appreciated. Currently, I have a css file in the /boot/config/plugins/folder.view/styles/ folder. The plugin picks up this .css file for some of its formatting. I'm sharing the file below.

Below is my Docker page design... including my custom animated icons:

Thank you for continuing this?

Thanks, that really means a lot! — especially coming from someone who helped shape the original plugin design.

And yes, custom CSS is still something I want to support. I know a lot of users have put time into tweaking the look and feel, so the goal is not to make anyone start over. If you’re using a CSS file in /boot/config/plugins/folder.view/styles/, That’s exactly the kind of customization path I’d like to keep working on where possible.

Depending on UI changes, some older selectors may need small adjustments, but I do want to preserve that flexibility.

I also have a pretty major update in the works that will add nested folder support, along with more bug fixes and general improvements.

Here is a little peek ;)

image.png

A mini guide for custom styling is a great idea too, and I agree it would be helpful.

Thanks again — both for the kind words and for helping lay the groundwork for the original plugin.

Thank YOU..! I look forward to the css feauture and the mini-guide. Hopefully the tag names won't change much. Nested Folder looks very interesting....indeed.

Thank you for continuing this?

Your FolderView2 CSS customization is supported in the latest FolderView Plus release (2026.03.13.12).

You do not need to start from scratch.

Compatibility status

FolderView Plus currently loads custom overrides from both current and legacy paths:

  • /boot/config/plugins/folderview.plus/styles

  • /boot/config/plugins/folderview.plus/scripts

  • /boot/config/plugins/folder.view/styles

  • /boot/config/plugins/folder.view2/styles

  • /boot/config/plugins/folder.view3/styles

  • /boot/config/plugins/folder.view/scripts

  • /boot/config/plugins/folder.view2/scripts

  • /boot/config/plugins/folder.view3/scripts

So a file like hernando.docker.css can keep working from a legacy folder, or you can copy it to the new folderview.plus path.

Mini migration guide (recommended)
  1. Keep your existing file names as-is (*.docker.css, .vm.css, .dashboard.css).

  2. Optionally move files to:

    • /boot/config/plugins/folderview.plus/styles

    • /boot/config/plugins/folderview.plus/scripts

  3. Hard refresh browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+F5) after updating.

  4. If needed, disable a file quickly by adding .disabled to the filename.

Selector/tag stability

We’re also maintaining stable legacy selector hooks for compatibility and regression-testing them in CI.
So your older style targeting should stay reliable across updates.

  • Improved tree controls for managing nested layouts safely.

  • Dashboard behavior updated so folder widgets stay clean and predictable with nested setups.

image.png

image.png

2) Import/Export + migration reliability (FolderView2/3)

  • Hardened legacy import parsing for older FolderView exports.

  • Fixed FolderView3 import path causing HTTP 400 on some backups with oversized embedded data.

  • Safer import transaction behavior with rollback protection.

  • Kept migration compatibility as a permanent priority (legacy paths and data supported).

3) Empty-state onboarding and first-run flow

  • Improved empty state UX when no folders exist.

  • Added action-focused startup choices (create folder, import config, run wizard).

  • Fixed “Open Wizard” action reliability in empty-state views.

4) Wizard overhaul (readability + flow + mobile)

  • Major setup assistant improvements for clarity and speed.

  • Better step flow, cleaner controls, improved readability and spacing.

  • Mobile support improvements for wizard layout and touch behavior.

  • Better defaults, guided setup options, and cleaner review/apply flow.

5) Mobile/touch improvements across settings

  • Improved basic table behavior on mobile.

  • Better action handling using overflow patterns where needed.

  • Reduced overlap/clipping issues and improved control spacing.

  • Better readability for key controls and status areas.

6) Legacy custom CSS/JS support kept and validated

  • Legacy override directories remain supported.

  • Existing customization workflows from folder.view, folder.view2, folder.view3 are still recognized.

  • Added regression coverage so legacy selector/tag contracts stay stable over updates.

  • This was also verified with real-world override patterns (including hernando.docker.css style workflows).

7) Runtime conflict protection (FolderView2/3 installed together)

  • Improved detection and safe-mode messaging when conflicting FolderView runtimes are installed at the same time.

  • Clearer “how to resolve” guidance in-plugin.

  • Prevents bad runtime overlap while keeping settings accessible.

8) Backup/restore integrity + regression hardening

  • Added stronger backup/restore contract checks.

  • Added large-library smoke/perf tests.

  • Expanded theme + settings-surface regression checks.

  • Strengthened release/CI guardrails to prevent repeat breakages.

Compatibility Notes

  • Existing configs remain supported.

  • Legacy migration support remains active for FolderView2/3 users.

  • Legacy custom style/script paths continue to work.

  • No intentional breaking changes to legacy migration behavior.

Known Behavior

  • If multiple FolderView runtime plugins are installed together, FolderView Plus will enter safe mode until the conflict is removed.

  • This is intentional to prevent runtime collisions.

Feedback Requested
If you test this release, please share:

  • Unraid version

  • Theme/theme engine

  • Desktop/mobile browser

  • Migration path used (fresh install, FolderView2 import, FolderView3 import)

Hi, I'm trying your plugin and I like it so far. Many more features and it seems you will support it further. Thank you for that!

I just have one issue: Whenever I edit or create a folder all the folders get thrown to the bottom of my docker overview. That is, my autostart order is messed up.

Sometimes I test dockers and if I like them I put them into folders to then set the order inside the folders for autostart. Maybe I am missing something.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you in advance.

This error happened to me as well. Unsure exactly what the cause is.
Also unable to disable the folder border, no matter what is selected in settings. Will file an issue on github.

I accidentally pushed a /dev/ link instead of a /main/ link. This has been resolved and it’s back in the CA store. I added a guard to prevent this in the future.

Am I able to turn off the border thats around the applications? Seems that the only thing I can do is change the color of the border. Its too noticeable to me when looking at the docker folders and I'd like to be able to turn it off.

Not currently, but if you make a feature request on the GitHub page for this, I can add it. The only way currently is to set the color to match your background so it blends in.

I opened one specific issue on github, but I appear to be having broader issues with this "request guard" blocking nearly anything I try to do. I can't enable "Lazy previews" or "Performance mode". I can't bulk move containers between folders. These both result in:

  1. A pop-up warning entitled "Runtime preference save failed" with the message "Request failed for /plugins/folderview.plus/server/prefs.php. HTTP 400 error - Blocked by request guard."

  2. An entry in phplog just like the one I get when trying to add a folder: "RuntimeException in /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/folderview.plus/server/lib.php:638 | Blocked by request guard."

Am I the only one experiencing this?

Thanks for the detailed report — this request-guard issue has been fixed.

Root cause:

Some environments strip/alter custom headers, so requests to prefs.php / bulk actions could fail guard checks even when called from the UI.

Fix shipped:

- Server guard now accepts either:

- X-FV-Request: 1 header, or

- _fv_request=1 marker in POST/query payload.

- Client mutation requests now always include _fv_request=1 and token fallback.

- prefs.php, bulk assignment, and folder create/update flows all use the guarded request path.

Status:

- Fixed in 2026.03.16.08 (March 16, 2026).

- Still present in the latest release 2026.03.17.06.

Please update to the latest, hard-refresh the browser (Ctrl+Shift+F5 Cache Refresh), then retest:

1) Toggle Lazy previews / Performance mode

2) Bulk move items between folders

If you still hit a 400 guard block, please share:

- plugin version cat /boot/config/plugins/folderview.plus/version)

- exact failing endpoint from browser Network tab

- latest php log line

And I’ll investigate immediately. Please post issues on GitHub.

Are you using a theme and if so which one? I’ll look at this and provide a fix.

I am just using Dynamix color theme: White

No custom CSS or anything.

  • Author

Thanks for reporting this and for the screenshot.

Root cause: the Setup Assistant wizard was inheriting host theme text tokens from Unraid. On some themes (including Dynamix Color Theme: White), which produced low-contrast text on the wizard’s dark background.

This is fixed in FolderView Plus v2026.03.21.03.

What changed:

- Isolated wizard text tokens from host theme tokens (so host theme colors can’t override wizard readability).

- Enforced wizard-local dark color scheme and explicit contrast-safe text colors.

- Added regression tests so this cannot silently break again with future theme updates.

Please update to v2026.03.21.03 and re-test the Setup Assistant on your theme.

If anything still looks off, send a new screenshot, and I’ll patch it quickly.
