SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O Shipping bios version? 1.x or 2.x?

Featured Replies

I'm about to purchase a SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O  from newegg.

Does anyone know if the current batches of SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O are shipping with a 1.x or 2.x bios?

I was going to purchase a E3-1230 v2 CPU but after reviewing supermicro's site, it says you have to boot with a regular CPU in order to upgrade 1.x to 2.x.

Just curious if anyone recently has purchased a board and can confirm bios 2.x.

Thanks.

Mine came with 1.03 in may. I had the x9scl-f and had a bad keyboard port. They gave me the x9scm-f when for RMA replacement.

I use the i3 and haven't updated bios but will try later today or this weekend.

I just chatted with the local supermicro rep and he tells me 1.x is good for older CPUs. The 2.x will work on older and new gen chips.

$180 + tax if you want to get one from the place I got mine.

Mine came from the egg in January with 1.x and upgraded last week to 2.x.

Speaking of which I purchased my X9SCM-F-O last year in Nov with a i3-2120T and of coarse now I want to make a ATLAS build..  I plan on getting one of the new v2 low power xeon processors that will support VT-D since of coarse the i3 processor wont do it.. I know I have to have the latest bios.. How do you even check what bios version you have?

<EDIT> Ok it says in bios that I have version 1.1a if thats the case how do I upgrade to v2? </EDIT>

Use the supermicro package fir version your upgrading to. The make disk software and directions come with the bios download will take you through the boot disk creation process. They are pretty good about testing what they tell customer to do before hand so your in good hands if you follow their readme.

I just updated my bios to 2.0. The process builds a back up for you before any chips are flashed.  I'm up and running on 2.0. unRAID RC4.

See my other threads on bios 2. Seems to work just fine.

Not sure which BIOS I have right now.. Gotta check tonight.. But Does anyone know if the new bios you can disable one or both of the onboard NICS?

I can't use the IPMI combo port (LAN1 I guess) because unraid only uses eth0 and eth1 is the port that has the IPMI.

Thanks

mike

I bought 2 of these boards from Newegg in the last month. Both came with 1.0. I upgraded to 2.0a manually.

No there isn't a way to disable the ports but you can fix that issue. It gave me a HUGE headache a few days ago.

That would seem to answer Weebo's original question ... it appears that you cannot run one of these boards with a new generation processor, until you have installed an older processor to reflash the BIOS first! :(

The slightly newer version of this board (X9SCM-IIF) which supports Ivy Bridge out of the box is starting to become available to resellers. The other plus is that it has two 82574L Intel NICs instead of one 82574L and one lesser supported 82579LM.

Call the resellers. They might not have it in stock but multiple told me they could order it with a short lead time.

As a disclaimer, I have not yet tested Ivy Bridge CPUs on it, but all indications are that it ships with a 2.x BIOS since it is new.

Just a note, the current SM board is out of stock on Newegg and not up for pre-order...no indication of restock date....they could be about to put a new version out in the wild as the previous poster stated.

It has autonotify enabled, which means it will probably be restocked. The new board mentioned is starting to show up at $399.

Think I'll wait on building the ESXi host for a while.

True that.

I'm just wondering if the SM boards are worth it for remote management alone.  That's really the only delta I see with the workstation class Z77s which also have broader CPU support.

But on topic, at least with newegg being out of stock, there is some chance that they will be restocked with boards that have v2 firmware

for IPMI monitoring. it all depends on how close you are with your machines.

If you have a spare monitor and keyboard then you do not need IPMI.

However if you need to access the machine remotely, it's nice to have that access.

Plus you can monitor a bunch of hardware points power up/power down remotely.

Since I have allot of machines, and limited KVM ports, the IPMI is a real help.

I'm switching out any of my server based machines to IPMI/KVM over IP so I do not need to put them on the KVM switch.

It's worth it to me. I've been using Supermicro server class boards since early 90s. They've lasted years and have never failed.

They lasted at least 3-4 years until my next upgrade. My current Supermicro workstation is going on 5 years. 24x7x365x5

I can get SM boards here in San Diego.  If  you want the name and phone number let me know.  I work around the corner from the shop that sells them so I will make sure it ships.

there are jumpers on the mobo to disable the LAN ports.

Following up on my earlier post, SuperBiiz now has them in stock (possibly because I special ordered from them and maybe they ordered extra). https://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-X9SMII

The X9SCM-IIF-O is the same as the F-O except for the BIOS and NICs?  Odd that Newegg isn't stocking them yet.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just wanted to confirm for everyone that my X9SCM-IIF from SuperBiiz was 2.0 and booted an Ivy Bridge CPU out of the box.

Had some PSU incompatibility issues, but aside from that, it is good!

Seems that way!

AWESOME!! Thanks. Looks like I'll be upgrading in the next few months!

Just FYI, I got a F-O today and it shows Bios version 2.0

Considering grabbing the new Supermicro board and an Ivy Bridge Xeon chip. What PSU did you have problems with?

Atm, I'm considering these three gold rated PSUs: Seasonic X-760, Corsair AX-750 and the Silverstone ST75F-G-E. The first 2 are known quantities, but they are $225 and $215 respectively. The Silverstone rates just as well according to Johnny Guru but is only $175 and has the added benefit of their Air Penetrator fans and a magnetic dust filter for easy cleaning. The price difference is not huge in the grand scheme of things, but well you can grab a 850W silverstone model for $189. The Silverstone is silent whilst the machine idles (in my case it would be most of the time) so it probably wins in the noise department provided the rest of the system does not make audible noise.
