Found Public unRAID Server On Google - Need Help Notifying The Owner

Featured Replies

So I was looking up some SimpleFeatures settings on google and thought I came across a forum containing what I wanted. Well, it turned out to be someone's unRAID server, wide open for the world to access.

Someone could easily screw up his or her server and data. I looked under settings, hoping to get an email from 'Email Notifications', but that module is not installed. Does anyone have any idea how to go about notifying this person so that they can secure their unRAID server before someone with nefarious intentions stumbles across it?

I don't want to give away the search criteria or the domain name of the server (though it's probably pretty easy given the information above), but if you think this could be you, private message me. You'll have to answer some questions to verify ownership though.

Create a share called, "You left your system open to the world, I shut it down to protect you. Visit the Unraid forums" and then power down the server [shrug]

That would work...  (and give the user a bit of a scare)

I once checked for two simple terms and found four open to the world.  I'm sure the guy that's leaving his open thinks that it "kicks ass" ;)

Appears it's offline now, anyway...

Dude you are killing me.  Now I'm going to spend all day trying to guess those two terms.  I'll need to look at my gui at home to see what might be unqiue and googlicious

I make a habit of searching for myself and my pc's every once in a while. I wanna know what kind of trail I'm leaving.

I did get confirmed through a private investigator my brother use to work with that without pulling strings with authorities he could find very little on me without using personal information.  That made me feel better. On the other hand, just using a screen name he found my brother's real name, address, phone number, where he worked, his income and the names and addresses of most of our family.

Hahaha. Yeah, I bet he does. If it comes back online I'll see about trying to create a share with a message and then shut it down.

Would a robots.txt file at least keep Google away?

How do you know if it's open to the world?

If your unraid's ip address starts with something other than 10, 192.168, 172.16-31, or 169.254, then it's probably open. If it starts with one of those numbers, then it's only open if you configured your router to forward outside traffic to your unraid's ip, or you have uPNP enabled and are running a uPNP enabled application on your server.

I'll give you a generic enough hint - Rememer that Google sees the same thing you do on the unRAID admin main page ;)
