October 20, 201213 yr Looking for real world uses. My laundry room is the coldest in the house. It's a 5'x8' room with its own HVAC register, plus an exhaust fan. I'm not worried about heat from the dryer; we only run about four loads a week. Found these: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/syd/3345416777.html My biggest concern is grabbing a server rack for cheap because it's available and then making the Norco purchase only to find it doesn't fit! At 26" deep, does the Norco case need to fit INSIDE the server rack? Would a different motherboard other than the ASUS M4A785-M Micro ATX be better in a Norco build? Something like the SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O? As you can tell, I need some direction.
October 20, 201213 yr You might need rails since the depth isn't as much a concern as the sheer weight. I've racked 26" deep 1U's with no problems but I'd never think ab out racking my Supermicro 24 bay without rails.
October 21, 201213 yr The Norco can hold a pretty good sized mobo buy it can also handle smaller boards. Choose the board that will give you the expansion you need bearing in mind you have 24 drives or more to support. Case weighs about 35lbs bare, once drives are in it it will be pretty heavy and nose heavy at that. I'd get some good rails - and will once I find a small rack myself ;-)
October 22, 201213 yr My server room is a utility closet that we built to hold sports equipment and winter clothes (Live in FL, but moved here from the NY). It had its own HVAC vent but then I realized that in the winter we sometimes heat the house so the Utility closet would get hot air in stead of cold air. It cost me about $3000 to add a small Mitsubishi split HVAC system. The closet now has a wall mounted (above the door) HVAC air handler and coil, with the compressor outside with the other two systems for the house. The closet is kept at 72 degrees F all the time. The Home automation system monitors the closet temp and will announce over the house audio announcement system if the temperature rises above 75 degrees. I thought the price of server racks were two high so I built my own out of plywood. I do a little cabinetry when I get the urge. I made it 30" deep, no back, and rails mounted front and back. The rack holds a 1.5 KVA UPS; a power distribution panel; twin 4" fans on a rack panel to keep air moving in the rack (probably not needed since the back is open; 3 PC's (each 2U high, one web server running Apache, one Home Automation running Homeseer, one spare); and the unRaid system. The unRaid system is in a Chenbro 3012 case which is 3Ux26" with 12 Hot Swap drive bays, internal space for 2 Drives (I Sata, 1 IDE), 1 slim CD ROM, and a PSU which is 2 redundant units @ 500 Watts per unit. The case is industrial quality and probably overkill, but I really like it. It even has hot swap-able internal fans. The server rack is about 48" high and sitting on top is a small monitor, keyboard/glide-Pad, and a 4 port KVM switch. the server rack is on casters with a nice umbilical cord to bring all the wiring to a wall panel which has all sorts of "Glue" components for Home Automation.
October 22, 201213 yr Jeff. Sent you a PM. I have a Full Size Rack sitting in my garage looking for a Home in Marysville Washington. Just North of Seattle. Of course you will have to provide transportation to where ever you want it.

October 23, 201213 yr I need to understand what the attachment size limit is. It states 192 KB but is that per file or for allfiles totaled?
October 24, 201213 yr looks very interesting ... although seeing it only from the side, thanks for the pic !

October 24, 201213 yr Huge is a relative term. Overall it is about 20" wide, 30"deep, and 48" high. As many racks are 96" tall, this is more like Huge/2. It needs to be 30" deep to accommodate deep server cases. The unraid case is 26" deep. The width, 20", is controlled by the fact that most racks are built to accommodate standard rack mount components which are built to go in "19 inch" racks. The closet it is in is roughly 7x8 with a 10 foot ceiling 560 cu ft. It fits my needs and If I need something else I can always build another with a 1 or 2 sheets of plywood.
