Office Rack Option

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Need a rack to 'hold'everything in my new office(soon to be built). I dont really like any of the proper server racks, not to mention the cost of them, they seems very expensive for what the are, so was thinking one of these,

it will hold my server, HTPC, printer, PS3, modem/router, switches, UPS, a 'charging station' for all the stuff that needs to be charged, answering machine, etc,

what do you think?  what do you guys and gals use?

would it not rattle at a lot ? (thinking vibrations from disks etc..  ?)

Have you checked out your local craigslist? If there is one in your area. Have seen server racks in my area fairly cheap under $100 often.

I use a very similar shelving unit http://www.target.com/p/seville-classics-4-shelf-mobile-storage-unit-chrome/-/A-10894791 and have never had an issue.  Bottom shelf holds UPS and 2 mid tower computers.  Next shelf holds 2 mid tower computers and a laser printer.  3rd shelf holds network gear and the top shelf holds stereo for my office.  I have never had issue with noise or vibration and it is very easy to pull away from the wall to get at the back of the computers to check connections.

I say go for it.

I'm in Australia, no Graigslist here. An I'm only looking at the stainless one because I know the chrome ones eventually rust, I have a few in my garage, which is dry.

They dont rattle at all, they are actually pretty sturdy.

Just thought I would ask to see if there is anything better for about the same $$

Just yesterday, I placed the order for my shelves. Five 24"x30" shelves, plus four posts and four casters. It's due to arrive on Saturday.

I have three of these (the brand is NSF in the states) in the house, plus two more in the garage. All have massive capacity ratings, plus are fairly reasonably priced. I had to order online for the size stated above. I could go down to Costco and buy more of the 14" deep units, but that didn't make sense. These 24" deep units are the bee's knees.

I'm very excited to get both my servers into a single area.

If you've got an Ikea around check out the DIY Lackrack :-)

Lackrack looks okay in premise, but I wanted extra space too. UPS, switch, keyboard, monitor, etc.

So stack the LACKs? Unless you meant you want more horizontal space. I don't think it'd be hard to fit a sliding shelf to the legs of the LACK and you can pop your KB on that ( find a KB with a built in trackpad/trackball for extra compactness ). Your monitor can go on top of the table. Switch can be a rackmountable version. UPS can sit on the floor ( depending on what size you get, they can be quite heavy )

My rack is already in place:

64" posts, five 24"D x 30"W shelves.

very good i like it.

if its all on wheels you can easily move it out to get at the back.

Nice one Jeff, I'm going to go that route.

Got a link to where you bought it from?

I ordered from here. Search for Regency shelving. You'll need posts, shelves, and casters if you want the unit to move around. The casters increase the height of the rack by about 6", so be prepared.

Why not buy the rails and plywood and build your own. That's what I did, built mine for about $110

Total cost would have been over $170, which was what I paid for this. I don't screw around when I build stuff. 3/4 9 ply Baltic birch, glued, screwed, primered (multiple spray coats), multiple coats of flat black top color. It would have been weeks of work all while I'm in school.

I usually do prefer to build stuff. Media center, cabinets, shed, etc.

I don't screw around building stuff either but the birch is going overboard :P.

For a server rack I'd be fine with mdf or spf plywood, usually mdf as I can get good sized scraps from a friend.

If I was going to be proudly displaying the rack I would think of birch, but depending on location I might just go with some RW veneer.
