XBMC 12.0 Frodo - Beta 1

Featured Replies

I heard it does not play nice with people whose setup includes mysql.  I'm waiting a bit more on this.

What's new (and important)?

TrueHd sound support?

AudioEngine has been merged into Frodo, which means we get DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD.

AE is the main reason I have been waiting to update my XBMC machine (still running Dharma).  Once openelec gets a beta out there I will likely wipe the machine and start from scratch.

The main features are AudioEngine, as mentioned, and PVR support.  XBMC can now act as a front-end for a TV tuner card, allowing you to watch live TV and record shows like a DVR.

I've been using the Frodo Alphas for about 3 months and upgraded to the Beta last night.  Frodo is excellent for those of us with a lot of ripped Blu Rays.  Both DTS-HD MA and TrueHD work perfectly with my equipment.  I've found even the alphas to be incredibly stable, but as always, there's a risk to your library using pre-release software.

Note that if you rely heavily on the web interface (remote control, notifications, remotely forcing library updates) Frodo eliminates the HTTP version and forces JSON.  JSON is present in Eden, but they didn't remove the deprecated HTTP version so most of the tools (like SickBeard, for example) didn't bother upgrading.  Now they'll be forced to.  In any case, expect this stuff not to work for awhile.

Any idea if they added 3d autoswitching and native playback within xbmc?
