AirVideo, Transcoding, Wireless and CPU?

Featured Replies

I got an iPhone 4s for my wife and I.  I also got 3 iPads for my kids and wife as Xmas presents.  I was able to install AirVideo on my UnRaid server, and it works great.  However, my kids were trying to watch different BD Movies on their iPad at the same time, and there is some buffering every 30 seconds or so.

So, I am wondering if there is anything I can do to be able to stream / transcode two BD movies at the same times using AirVideo to iPad or iPhones without having buffering?  Would it help to have a better CPU?  A better modem/router?

My server's specs are under my signature.  I am currently using a U-Verse 2Wire modem / router for wireless connection, which is only rated G.

Run "top" from the console,  that should tell you.  If the airvideo process is using 100% cpu during the pauses.... you probably need more CPU.  If not... its probably something else.  Try trans-coding to two wired clients?

I haven't been able to do any testing as of yet due to Holidays and family gathering.  However, I've got a question, is there a way to make AirVideo start up on rebooting? Rather than me starting the application?

My wife turned of the server, and when she turned it back on the kids couldn't play any movies because the AirVideo wasn't started, and my wife didn't know how to start it back up.

You might also want to look at Plex, I have both programs and find Plex seems to do better with my media while AirVideo handles "channels" like Amazon better.

Which variant of Airvideo are you using, the plugin or the version installed via unmenu?

The plugin version automatically restarts as long as it was in the enabled state prior to reboot.

Sorry to hijack - my AirVideo plugin doesn't start automatically even though it's set to enabled. I have to go into the settings page and hit "Done" after each reboot to have it start AirVideo again.

Tested ok here with vanilla dev 5.0-b12a unraid system, using plugin "airvideo-0.8-i486-rj.plg" from this thread + jre7u2 via plugin done by ajax.  Installed, set to enable, airvideo running.  Stopped array, rebooted, airvideo started automatically.  Also tested by doing a hard reboot from command line rather than controlled array stop.  Worked on both occasions.

Would be interested to know more about your setup as might help determine why it's not working for you.

Airvideo should start automatically.

Your buffering issue is network related, there are a couple of things you can do:

1) Make sure your bandwith is very clean while you stream, that is a bad solution, it should just work right ?

2) Set the Airvideo GLOBAL SETTINGS to a lower level for local WIFI, you can quite easily take several steps down without you noticing it on an ipad or iphone, this will make for less trafic and thus less buffering

3) Set up QOS en set the airvideo traffic to "exempt" and make sure all torrent/nzb and such is set to "bulk", this will make sure that your airvideo stream gets maximum bandwith.

I have done a combination of 2 and 3, 2 only also works (and takes 5 seconds to configure in the airvideo client (No need to do anything server-side). Without doing 3 you might need to go down a few steps more then with 2 and 3 combined.

It COULD also be cpu related (and there TOP might help), but is mostly is not. Disk intensive operations also have negative impact, so a parity check running might also have negative effect.. If you use SABnzbd make sure that you set SAB to stop downloading while unpacking, that helps.

AirVideo wouldn't install via UnMenu so I followed the directions from a different thread on doing in it manually by downloading their plugin and using telnet to install it.  There is no option to reinstall after reboot.  I will try to find the thread and post it here if that helps.

This is the thread where I found the directions on how to install AirVideo via telnet.

Ok, that's the thread I created for the plugin I wrote and the post you link to is where I advise of how to install the plugin from command line.  You can do it that way or as long as there is a copy of the .plg file located at /boot/config/plugins (or /flash/config/plugins if you are accessing your flash drive over share) then every time you reboot Unraid, AirVideo plugin will automatically reinstall.  You should be able to see and manage AirVideo from settings page in the Unraid webgui.

Setting it to enable and leaving it that way prior to stopping the array/rebooting will ensure the plugin not only gets reinstalled upon reboot but self starts after the array comes online.

Version 0.8 of the plugin is most current.  Grab it from the first post in the link you supplied.  Drop it into /flash/config/plugins and reboot or follow the instructions I gave for installing it from command line.

I've got it enable.  The only issue is that it doesn't start airvido at all.  I've got to go to settings and start it manually.

I'll think on it some more also.  I've a feeling it might be failing to start due to a dependency and since the only one is JRE java, perhaps that's what is failing to load in time for AirVideo to start.  Would be the case if both are being installed as separate plugins (alphabetically) and if JRE was being installed another way it could still be likely AirVideo is getting installed first.

I installed JRE Java via UnMenu.  I don't know if that makes a difference.

The autoinstall from unmenu runs after plugins are installed. I haven't looked at the airvideo code but it probably starts when the array disks are mounted. If this is the case its very possible its trying to start before jre is installed. There is a plugin for jre that should solve that for you.

I've installed the JRE plugging in unmenu, but AirVideo still not running every time I reboot my server.  I've got to go to setting and start it every time.

THANKS everyone for help me by sharing all this information. please some tell me more about this thing.

Well, I've tried installing the JRE plugin, and it won't work.  This is the error I get:

root@Tower:/boot/config/plugins# installplg jre-6u27-i586-1aj.plg

Use this one.  It's my cloud copy of jre plugin, updated to use jre version 7u2

or from command line:

wget -q -P /boot/config/plugins http://dl.dropbox.com/u/572553/UnRAID/jre7u2/jre-7u2-i586.plg
installplg /boot/config/plugins/jre-7u2-i586.plg

then enable it via unraid webgui settings page

I was able to install it by using someone else's download link.  Thank.  Now, AirVideo starts up by itself on every reboot.  It's the version 7U2 better?  Should I even bother to change to 7u2?

Either version is good for Airvideo.  Should you upgrade, perhaps.  Does it matter?  Probably not.  Stick with what's working for you.
