May 23, 201313 yr 4 months is forever? Worse than a 5 year old. Three years is a pretty long stretch of time in software development, I think it's fair to say. That's how long v5 has been in beta.

May 23, 201313 yr Or not http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/gmail-loses-beta-label-google-removes-doubt-that-apps-are-enterprise-ready/20754 I don't think web based software that is constantly updated is really comparable to a shipping software package like unraid, etc.
May 23, 201313 yr While I agree the UnRAID interface is a bit dated, it is also NOT a program you "use" ==> like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Quicken, etc. At its core, it's simply a big "disk" ... albeit one that happens to physically consist of a bunch of others, just like any other RAID array. It would indeed be nice if it had a few more "modern" control screens -- but the typical user should virtually NEVER have to use the Web GUI ... so what difference does it make whether or not it's "modern" Looked at the RAID setup pages for Adaptec, Areca, LSI, etc. lately??
May 23, 201313 yr Author It should look modern so as to not put off potential new buyers... I first looked at UnRaid after it was recommended to me, and then went on to FreeNas and others as UnRaid looks like ****... Yes I know once its setup you will never really need to do anything more with it, but the fact remains its a device/product in your home. Other people have taken the time to make nice skins as it were, with far greater functionality than what comes as stock. If the Dev took the next patch/update and incorporated that into his work it would be so much better and get a higher audience. But the fact remains this whole product is run off 1 guy, who looks like he could use some help. I could be mistaken and if I am, I am sorry. But how long has v5 been in beta!? And how often do you get a patch release? If there were more Devs working on it with a unified vision they could not old get more done and have things sorted. But they could bounce ideas/issues/bugs off each other and get things sorted so much quicker. Rant over

If v5 was finalized two years ago and the updates had been point releases it would be one thing. But to the average Joe who comes by looking for a NAS solution and sees the last stable version was released over 2 years ago and the next version has been in beta for 3 years it starts to look like abandon-ware with some guy doing the bare minimum to keep it functioning. And to top that all off, to them it looks like he's charging money for this abandon-ware. Posts pop up on here all the time rightfully pointing out that the stock UI looks like a shit geocities website from 1998. I designed nicer looking websites in Notepad when I was 13 years old in 1999. Whether or not you need to look at the UI once an hour or once a year, if the UI sucks, these days people will ignore your product. Full stop. Even the new website looks 8-10 years out of date. Compare FreeNAS.org to the new Lime-Tech website. The new site looks like it was put together from a 8 year old WordPress template. If Tom paid someone for that work he got robbed. Thank god Tom has been putting effort in to a slideshow for the site. Now all the people coming from MySpace will know he means business...
May 24, 201313 yr I agree -- mrow has a very good point r.e. the "marketing" end of UnRAID. I don't think the Web GUI's appearance is a big deal -- it's completely functional; provides the status you need; and with a single add-on (UnMenu) you can also get more detail than 99.9% of the folks ever look at anyway. Remember, in essence UnRAID is just a NAS. If you buy a NAS appliance, you typically don't try to add a bunch of stuff to it (all the add-ins that probably cause 99% of the issues folks come to this forum to get help with) -- you just use it for the storage it's designed to provide. UnRAID is really just a more-flexible "do-it-yourself" NAS appliance that allows you to mix drives of various sizes and even different interfaces (IDE, SATA, SCSI). If you're sophisticated enough to "roll your own" NAS, I suspect that the look of the Web GUI doesn't really matter !! HOWEVER, mrow hits on a very good point -- when you're DECIDING on whether or not to use UnRAID, the look & feel of the commercial activity (e.g. the web site) can definitely have an impact. And in that regard, there could definitely be some improvements.
May 24, 201313 yr Compare FreeNAS.org to the new Lime-Tech website. I don't think that the freenas site is particularly attractive - the flexraid site is a much better example.
May 28, 201313 yr The argument that you don't need to look at the GUI and UnRAID should just sit in the basement serving files doesn't hold water. UnRAID is missing the very basic NAS feature of email notification. Without that feature, if you run it stock, you are forced to look at the GUI often, otherwise, UnRAID can sit in the basement and silently fail until you lose data.

Definitely agree -- E-mail should be a "stock" feature !!
