[SOLVED] PreClear HotSwap in 5.0?

Recommended Posts

Does 5.0 Support HotSwap drives for disks to be PreCleared?

I would LOVE to PreClear 4TB (or larger) drives for my Home Machine & Work Machine without the need to powerdown the home server.

I would LOVE to wipe old Work drives prior to sending off for recycling (right now we physically destroy the drives first  :'(  )

If so, is it as simple as plugging a Sata drive directly into the motherboard/sas controller - or -  do we need a hotswap bay?

If we need a hotswap bay would you recommend something other than Rosewill's RX-C525

I would go with an ICY DOCK MB876SK-B single bay, but I do NOT want to listen to a fan

Note: Right now my Fractal Design Define R4 is SILENT with 2 140mm intake and 1 140mm exhaust (Noctua fans all) fans.  The 4TB drives have not gotten warmer than 35* in my closet.

First, unRAID itself is NOT hot-swap capable for the protected array.  However, if your motherboard AND disk controller AND power supply can handle plugging in a new disk drive without being powered off first, it might work for disks not assigned to the array.

You don't specifically need a hot-swap bay, perhaps an external SATA docking adapter might suit your needs.  (not one connected via USB, but one connected via an ESATA cable.  Although USB would work for preclearing, it would be much slower.)

Something like this using the ESATA cable: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153071R

I find I can hot swap without issues.  It depends on the motherboard/disk controller being happy with hot-swap.  It is important, though, that you do not try and hot swap a disk in the array unless the array is stopped or you will encounter problems.

Thank you both!

I understand that unRaid does not support a hot swap drive for use in an array - if the disk can be recognized for PreClear use only, I am a happy camper.

Once the machine is up and running (2 more PreClears to go) I will test it by plugging a disk directly into an internal motherboard header (BIOSTAR TA785GE) and psu sata connector (SeaSonic X Series X650 Gold).

If this does not work, I will attempt to connect it to my AOC-SASLP-MV8/firmware .21

If either option works, I will go with the Rosewill HotSwap bay.

I do not believe my MOBO (TA785GE 128M) contains an eSata port

As long as your SATA mode is AHCI (set in the BIOS, so you do need to reboot to confirm) then the system supports hot swap.  I don't know for a fact (haven't tried it), but I'm fairly certain that you can hot-swap drives in UnRAID as long as you Stop the array first ... but as I noted, I haven't tried it -- perhaps someone has ??

But in any event, there certainly shouldn't be an issue with drives outside of the array, unless there's a Linux issue => and I doubt that's the case (but I'm not a Linux guy so I really don't know).

I am building a whole custom server case based on these types of hot swap bays.

You can get them cheaper on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=sata+mobile+rack&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR2.TRC1&_nkw=sata+mobile+rack+led&_sacat=0

There are some that also have a power button:

I have ordered 14 of these for my custom server.

WeeboTech - that is a very nice unit!

Using this I could swap my R4 for a LianLi PC-V354, keep 8 3.5" drive spaces, Add 5 2.5" spaces and knock off a LOT of the vertical space used.

Then again... the R4 is a very silent case...

Ohhh... or I could add 4 HD (2 3.5 and 2 2.5) to the 8 bays I already have :)
