December 8, 201312 yr Newbie here...I am having some issues with name resolution. I am using version 5.03. I can access the webgui using the local IP, but the //tower address is not working. I have searched for a few answers, but nothing so far has worked... The first solution suggests I change my "Local Master" setting from no to yes. I can't find the local master setting. It is not under the settings>notifications... Was this recently removed in this new version? Do I have to assign disks for this feature to be turned on?... I know that I can potentially resolve this by editing my machine's host file, but I'd rather not do that, since I will probably be using a number of different machines, and I'd rather not edit that hosts on all of them....I guess I could if that is the only solution. Any ideas? My network router is an Apple Airport Xtreme, and all the machines I use are all macs (except for the Unraid machine, that is a repurposed windows box). Also, I have edited my network config host file on the unraid flash to DHCP>NO and filled in the static IP settings. They work, only when I use the IP address though. syslog.txt
December 8, 201312 yr Set Settings->SMB->Local master: YES and Settings->Network Setting->Obtain IP Address Automatically: YES
December 8, 201312 yr Author Thanks dgaschk, I found the local master settings. It was already on. If I turn on "Obtain IP Address Automatically" won't that remove the static IP?
December 8, 201312 yr I found the local master settings. It was already on. If I turn on "Obtain IP Address Automatically" won't that remove the static IP? yes, but you can reserve it in your router dhcp reservations settings page. That way every time your system restarts or request ip renew it gets a assigned the same one.
December 8, 201312 yr Author Thanks nacat78, I updated the settings, and I'm still not able to get to //tower Think it has something to do with OS X Mavericks? Like I previously mentioned, I'm currently on a mac.
December 8, 201312 yr Try shutting down everything (including any media players or HTPCs) on your network EXCEPT for your unRAID server for about a half hour. Start things up slowly-- a few minutes between each device. Then go make a cup of coffee and have a doughnut or two. This will allow enough time for the network to resolve exactly the device which is the master browser on your network and for that decision to propagate through the network. (The SMB polling interval seems to measured in minutes-- NOT seconds-- and that is the reason for all the delays.) Then NEVER shut off your unRAID server and it will always remain the Master Browser. That normally resolves all of these types of issues.
December 8, 201312 yr Author Thanks Frank, I'll give that a shot once my disks are finished pre-clearing.
December 9, 201312 yr I found the local master settings. It was already on. If I turn on "Obtain IP Address Automatically" won't that remove the static IP? yes, but you can reserve it in your router dhcp reservations settings page. That way every time your system restarts or request ip renew it gets a assigned the same one. This is the correct method. It allows all IP addressing to managed from a central point and has other reliability benefits. Depending on the router, DHCP may help with name resolution.
December 9, 201312 yr Author Try tower.local Thanks. This worked, but when I run unmenu, each link I click tries to connect to http://tower...which obviously results in a Chrome file not found error.
December 10, 201312 yr Try tower.local +1 For Mac OS X: Use either tower.local or the DNS numeric address. (I can never seem to get consistent response from 'tower.local' and am still looking to fix that. But I just setup a static port for unraid, and bookmarked the IP address.)
December 10, 201312 yr Really, editing the hosts file takes about 2 seconds and has worked flawlessly for me for years. As a note, I know next to nothing about *NIX (and the underpinnings of my Mac) and even I can do it.
December 10, 201312 yr what kind of router are you running Apple Airport Xtreme. Same here, i have that same problem. i just edited the host file on the computer that i uses to connect to.
December 10, 201312 yr Editing the hosts file on Mac OS X (Lion, Mt Lion, Mavericks) http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/07/edit-hosts-file-mac-os-x/ OR, See the next post from dgaschk!

December 11, 201312 yr Author Thanks for the help everyone. I've edited the hosts file before... I was just looking for an alternative solution since I was planning on having a bunch of different machines on the network, and I didn't want to do that to all of them. Anyway, hosts file is edited on my main machine and everything is working as it should. Thanks again.
