December 23, 201411 yr I believe the answer is "yes" but would like confirmation before proceeding... Can one stop an array while a pre-clear is in process without terminating pre-clear? I would like to transition one of my array drives from RFS to XFS which requires stopping the array but I'm in the middle of a looooong pre-clear of a 6TB drive (USB via SNAP) which I'd prefer to not terminate. TIA, Y
December 23, 201411 yr preclear runs on drive(s) outside the array. The drive being precleared is not as member of the array so stop/starts of array won't affect it.
December 23, 201411 yr PS. by USB? Argh that will take a long time. Just finished a single run on a 6Gbps motherboard port still took 40 hours == Last Cycle's Pre Read Time : 14:30:58 (114 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Zeroing time : 10:10:58 (163 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Post Read Time : 14:56:29 (111 MB/s) == Last Cycle's Total Time : 39:39:26
December 23, 201411 yr Took my 90 hours to preclear 3 of WD RED 6TB drives at the same time with 3 cycles and the faster preclear script

December 23, 201411 yr Author Thank you for confirming, interwebtech. Yes, long pre-clear time indeed; 50% through Post Read, 144+ hours. I didn't need the drive immediately and figured this would be a good way to "test" it anyway. Is the drive you want to change from RFS to XFS empty? Changing file systems will format the drive. Thanks, trurl. Yes, all data has been transferred off the drive. Been successful twice before moving from RFS to XFS just haven't tried it during a pre-clear. Y
December 24, 201411 yr I hear you with the long preclear times. Currently using the faster preclear script preparing a 5TB via USB and I'm at 191:39:00 with 53% completed in the last step. 40 to 50 hours more to go?
December 29, 201411 yr Preclearing a 6TB drive in a HP microserver has taken 53hrs per cycle ... x 3 = 160hrs = just under a week!!
