March 28, 201511 yr Can anyone chime in on a lightweight utility, basically a scheduler, that will copy specified folders on my PC to a specified location on my unraid server? I'd like to back up once a night, and keep 7 complete backups before looping back to re-write backup 1 again working up to the 7th. Repeat over and over.
March 28, 201511 yr 2 windows solutions: 1 - Cobian Backup http://www.cobiansoft.com/cobianbackup.htm no facility for running backup profiles at shutdown (but it is free!!!) 2 - Second Copy http://www.secondcopy.com/ can run backup profiles as part of windows shutdown (costs GBP 23.36 / USD 29.95) Both can be profiled to do what you want. I use Second Copy myself...

Also Windows Backup, part of Windows 7 and 8 works real well. It even does a snapshot which can do a restore if you have a OS problem
March 29, 201511 yr I like SyncBack. I use the SE version (not free), but the freeware version is fine for most purposes. You simply create a "Profile" for each folder you want to back up; then create a "group profile" that runs all of the individual profiles. It's got a built-in scheduler, so you can schedule the profiles to run at the time of your choice. For what you want to do, I'd create a set of profiles to backup the folders you want; then create seven group profiles [Monday Backup, Tuesday Backup, ... etc.] and schedule them to run at the times you want. Add all of the profiles to each of the group profiles; then modify the profiles destinations to match the appropriate days. http://www.2brightsparks.com/welcome/backup/freeware-2013-01-02-sp.html?gclid=CJG77OKuzMQCFYc7aQodOV8Avg
March 29, 201511 yr I have used several over the years including Windows native backup. I am back to Acronis True Image now at version 2015 ($30 I think) which runs quietly in background, sends an email on completion (or errors). It is dead simple to setup basic backups but has tons of advanced options under the hood if you want them.
March 31, 201511 yr I'm old school. I just schedule robocopy to run at 1am daily. Nothing at all wrong with that. And indeed, all that's needed to do the rotation the OP wants to do is 7 scripts that run at weekly intervals (one on each day) with different backup targets.
