Using DVD Player on unRaid to Play/Record/Rip DVD's?

Featured Replies

Plex does not read from discs. Only works with video container files (mkv, mp4, etc, but not VOB or ISO). That said, if you can get the DVD to be read, there is a Handbrake docker (think I saw a MakeMKV too?) that can rip them to formats usable by Plex.

PS. that is the main drawback of Plex, no support for "offline" titles.

PSS. I do all my ripping and processing on a Windows laptop with latest i7, then save them to unRaid share(s).

You can use my makemkv docker to rip movies  :D

And it works beautifully!

Here's the key issue with MakeMKV (from their website) - Please note that commercial blu-ray discs are proteced by technologial (their spelling errors!) measures preventing unauthorized duplication (including, but not limited to, "Cinavia" technology). MakeMKV doesn't remove such measures, so MKV file produced from a commercial blu-ray disc will not play on a blu-ray player, even when converted back to M2TS format.

So MakeMKV would not be able to rip most dvd's at this point - unless someone knows something I'm not aware (please update!).

I used MakeMKV and Handbrake for a long time, but they just stopped working on recent movie formats (esp the Disney Fake techniques).  So I came up with $49 and bought the WinX DVD family of tools.  They work well.  Have problems every now and then, but its under active development with updates every few months.

I'd LOVE to see a WinX DVD Ripper Docker.

Perhaps the answer to this would be to run Windows 10 in a VM?  Then you could run the tools from Windows against the files on the server.  So many bits...  You'd also have to deal with encoding the meta information (i.e. I use Meta X - great program) as well.  AND then there's performance.  You need some horsepower to rip dvds quickly...  I've got an i5 with 16gb ram on an SSD and it still chugs to do a movie...  *sigh* - what we really need is a (legit) service that has ALL the DVD's ripped for you.  I suppose that why everyone does the torrents...  Simple quick, but definitely not legit...

I have absolutely no problem ripping the latest movies with makemkv. But I don't play back the mkvs on a bluray player though.

There is already a solution for finding the correct title on discs, but you need to have a player in windows and resource monitor tool. I'll see if I can find the YouTube link tomorrow.

You can also search for the correct title as it's often available on the makemkv or anydvd forum.

Same here, I have had no problems with makeMKV so far, but I do not play the files off an BD player.

I rip them with MakeMKV, then I shrink them with Handbreak (not much usually, I use constant quality 21 and keep the HD audio tracks intact as passthrough and sometimes add an AAC track too, goes from 30GB to 10-11 normal)

and play this files on Plex and/or Kodi.

Same thing here. No problems at all with MakeMkv, heck it was even able to rip some HD-DVD's I had...

The confusion seems to be with playing back on an actual DVD/Blu-Ray player... which I also don't do, however if you want to turn it into a digital copy to play on digital formats it works fine.
