cr0nis
Hi Everyone, I recently began having issues with on of the drives in my unraid setup. I currently have 5 data sata drives, 1 sata parity drive and an older ide cache drive. within the last 2 weeks i noted that my second drive is listed with the red x next to it. After reading many posts I've tried a few things Stop the array change the bad drive to not installed [restart array stop array change he disk to the disabled drive start array let the rebuild complete The rebuild gets to 20-25% and stops. I have also replaced the sata cable, moved the hdd off the motherboard and onto a pci sata card and still no luck. Any help you can provide would be appreciated Thanks in advance! syslog.txt ST2000DM001-9YN164_S1E0XTBM-20160225-1916.txt Quote Link to comment
trurl
The SMART you posted is showing the disk isn't really responding. Before attempting to rebuild onto the same disk that failed, you really should have some reason to believe that the disk is still good. Do you have another disk you can use to rebuild? Go to Tools - Diagnostics and post the complete diagnostics zip. For v6 it is very much preferred that you always post the complete diagnostics zip. This contains the syslog, SMART for all drives, and lots of other useful information that will save everyone from having to ask for it a little at a time. Quote Link to comment
cr0nis
Thanks for the reply. i've attached the full zip. I just assumed that since the rebuild has hit the 35% mark that it was working ok. In the meantime let me see if i have another drive to swap it out with for now. tower-diagnostics-20160225-1916.zip Quote Link to comment

Isn't unRAID giving you any SMART status indication on the dashboard about these other disks? Quote Link to comment
cr0nis
My dashboard only shows an issue with the 1 drive. the only other drive i have available for testing is a 256 ssd. Would that work or is it too small? Thanks again for your help Quote Link to comment
trurl
... the only other drive i have available for testing is a 256 ssd. cr0nis
I thought you asked to add a drive to see if it causes any errors. I'll have to wait and get a new 2tb drive for replacement. Attached are the two screen shots Quote Link to comment
trurl
Do you have notifications setup? Looks like you should be getting at least a thumbs-down on the Dashboard for 5, 197, 198. Maybe try unchecking/rechecking and then Apply to see if it will notice. Quote Link to comment
cr0nis
Hi All, im now seeing the thumbs down on the cache drive. At this point what are my next steps. Do I need to replace the 2tb drive that is being emulated? should i replace the cache drive as well? Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Disk 2 dropped offline, there’s no SMART info on the diagnostics, you can try power cycling the server and get a new SMART report, but since the rebuild failed more than once, especially after changing sata cable and controller, I would try to rebuild on a new disk. cr0nis
is there a way to rebuild and swap the parity at the same time. my parity is set at 2tb and i might as well upgrade the size if i need to get a new drive. Am I stuck having to buy a 2tb replacement drive for now? Quote Link to comment

cr0nis
Thanks for the thread. Looks like I'll but a 2tb for now and justr by a lerger one next time and do a cleaner swap of the parity. As for the cache drive. is this guy a gonner as well? Quote Link to comment

JorgeB
One more thing, I don't know if your disks were re-purposed but all have been very close to or above 60C, that's way too hot, make sure your cooling is adequate, try to keep them below 45C. Quote Link to comment
cr0nis
All of my drives were re-purposed out of external hdd enclosures which i used for a hdd swap before i built the unraid server. Everything was spare parts but based on the success of the server i think i just might built for purpose now so i can get decent Plex transcoding while keeping temps at bay. I ordered a WD Red 2tb drive to make it a straight forward swap & rebuild. With the high amount of writes its running 12-20 degrees C less than all other drives. The Mrs has given me the thumbs up tp begin replacing the other drives so hopefully that helps with my overall heat issue. Quote Link to comment
