July 25, 20169 yr So looking at my signature anyone have an idea of how much power (Watts) my server is using when all drives are spun up and running and when all the drives are spun down? I know I can buy a meter but don't need that, just want an idea.

July 25, 20169 yr Your system should be idling around 20W-25W + 1-2W per HDD. Each spun-up HDD should use around 10-15W and under heavy use 20W. You then have to add system load which your I highly doubt would go above 75W. Unfortunately can't get any more specific than that without a meter.

If transcoding etc going on will draw more. If you have a ups you can get a rough idea by looking at the Ups Load, UPS Summary on dashboard.

I do have a UPS, I guess I need to unplug the server so the UPS kicks in to see the load though.

July 26, 20169 yr Is it a bug, or why does your battery show 120 percent charged? Ha its because my ups is so super powerful no.. my old acp ups always said 100%. This one for some reason doesnt report the correct amount.

July 27, 20169 yr The specifications for your Supermicro X10SDV-7TP4F SOC motherboard (system-on-chip) indicate that it's power consumption is in the range of 35-65 watts. This would not, of course, include the consumption of your hard drives. Typical drives these days draw in the neighborhood of 3 watts when spinning but idle, so with 8 drives spinning you're likely drawing about 25 watts for the drives, and at a low CPU utilization about 35 watts for the motherboard ... or 60 watts total. But that's clearly just a guess ... and the motherboard may indeed draw less than that when the system's idle. I'd spend a few $$ and get a Kill-a-Watt https://www.amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electricity-Usage-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469609102&sr=8-1&keywords=killawatt+usage+meter ... or a UPS that will display the consumption
July 27, 20169 yr Note: You're probably also drawing 2-5 watts more than you need to because of the power supply you're using. A 650w unit is far larger than you need for this system; and it will be operating well below its most efficient range. It's also only bronze certified. Not worth replacing ... but just something to be aware of. If you ever replace it, I'd get a 450w gold-certified unit. [unless, of course, you're planning to add a lot more drives, in which case you do indeed need to support the higher spin-up current.]
