August 28, 20169 yr I have a simple rig. Only added bonus is a Nvidia GT710 1gig. I know the GPU isn't the best but I have it, so bleh. I've seen a previous thread (https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=42802.msg407982#msg407982) but was advised to create a new one. I'm a newbie to Unraid. I'm running Plex server, Transmission, SABnzbd, Sickbeard. My short term goal is to create a VM. What can I use my GPU for?
August 29, 20169 yr With the right CPU/MB you could use the GPU in a VM to create a Plex client if your rig is close enough to connect HDMI.

August 29, 20169 yr Author Then why are you even asking about a GPU??? Because I have it sir. Want to make use of the hardware since I have it. Sent from my ONE A2003 using Tapatalk
August 29, 20169 yr There are some ways to use a GPU for certain kinds of calculations. Folding@Home and BOINC are 2 applications that come to mind. Don't know if there is any way to get the dockers for those 2 apps to use your GPU or not, but you might be able to run them in a VM and make use of it that way. Details left as an exercise for the OP.

I also don't think GT 710 cards are blah, they are nice efficient cards that fit in some small machines and they do some pretty heavy lifting. Your question should actually be "Can I run a VM with my motherboard & CPU". Because if you can't your card is a paperweight.
August 30, 20169 yr Well, you will need a graphics card to create a VM, so there you go.Why? 4 of my normal use VM's don't have a graphics card, they are all accessed by RDP or VNC. Now, if you want a physical monitor connected to the server to display said VM, then yes, you need a graphics card and passthrough. The OP said headless, no monitor, so no video card needed.

We are sort of changing the OP's question but I am all ears. I don't know what type of VM you are running but my thought was how great it would be to have a man cave server run a VM or two to run a Windows machine and a Kodi client. I thought it is necessary to have enough slots to add 2 graphics cards to make that work.

I don't use Kodi but I thought it would work on extenders so I could see a headless server and an extender providing the video output. All depending on how good the extender was of course. Or even installed on the TV itself maybe?
August 30, 20169 yr The only time you need a GPU in your UnRAID box is when you're going to pass through that GPU to a VM for a specific reason, be it running a monitor/TV off the GPU to run Kodi/Plex/Emby, or using the GPU for compute duties like folding@home/crypto currency mining/media transcoding. Otherwise, normal VMs can use the "VNC" graphics, which means you don't need a GPU in your machine - heck your machine can run off an 8MB PCI VGA card, or no graphics at all. I used to run a heap of VMs on UnRAID and the machine either had the 8MB Matrox G200 built in to the iKVM chip, or used an old 8MB ATI RageXL PCI.

Is there more info on this? I'd love to be able to have a docker use a dedicated GPU for transcoding as I'd like my UNRAID's CPU to be as power efficient as possible.
