unRAID can't generate a flash GUID

Featured Replies

Purko,

In the corporate world that I work in, we use them everyday between developers of different companies entrusted with source code and they are very much enforceable.  In the case of the key, it would have my name embedded with it.

Anyways I’m also not holding my breath on getting one; I just pointed it out a viable solution to the problem before moving on to something else that works.

Considering what little help you’ve contributed to this thread (kidding around about discontinued GUID support), Id just prefer you not participate in this thread. Thanks.

So, you are a Very Important Person, I gather.

Is this particular board the only board your "corporate world" can afford to buy you?

Or do you have like 800 of them, each itching to be turned into a server with a zero-GUID key-file?

I can almost imagine Tom hopping on a plane and flying over to check just how many unRAIDs you have in your corporate buildings.

FYI, I have the ASUS P7H55-M motherboard, and I have the invoice to prove it. (I'll fax it to Limetech).

So, should any zero-GUID key-files be given out, I have the right to demand one such key for my motherboard.

Thanks

Hi PCRx,

The issue hasn’t been resolved yet.  My last contact was with Tom two weeks ago.  We exchanged a dozen emails from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am.  He had me type in a sequence of Linux commands and I sent him the output.  He discovered that I’m missing some files that are necessary to generate the flash GUID.  I email him a week ago but have yet to get a response.

It could be that he needs recompile the Linux kernel to add support or it could be a much larger problem with the licensing mechanism on newer MB.  I don't know.

I understand that these kinds of things take time to solve…up to a point.  I need to get this working with the hardware I’ve invested in.  If that means Tom can update unRAID in a few more weeks; great.  Another solution could be if Lime-Tech would issue me the encrypted key file that uses the all zero GUID and has me sign some type of non-discloser agreement stating that I will never release it into the “wild” with civil and criminal penalties if I do, I’ll happily sign it, but that’s up to lime-tech.

I just want to get unRAID working..

If all else fails, I’ll just mail lime-tech back the 2 USB flash drives + license for a $168 refund.  Then it’s off to play with FreeNas (something I’d rather not do, but what else can I do).  I just can’t keep looking at 40TB that’s powered off much longer.

Hey FibreChannel76.  I feel your frustration.  Hope Tom can get you working.

But I don't think it reasonable for you to ask him to cut you a .key file for an all zero GUID.  It just opens Pandora's box on Tom's ability to continue to sell his product.  The thumbdrive could be stolen, your email acct compromised, or one of your friends could make a quick copy while you weren't looking after you demoed your storage powerhouse.  Or who knows, you could get disgruntled with something that may happen in the future.  All bad things for Tom.

If you have read the forums for very long you likely found that unRAID has problems with some motherboard - and that picking one that others have had success with is a good idea.  Not doing so can slow you down in your journey towards unRAID nervana.  Tom is a very creative guy in finding ways to solve customer issues, I have a lot of confidence he'll find a way to get past this.  Keeping my fingres crossed for you.

BTW, if you haven't already, would suggest reporting this issue to Asus.

Thanks for the replies. I've got some good news that might calm the raw nerves about this issue. I've been consulting with Tom the whole day and I'm happy to report he has fixed this issue. He really put in the extra effort to get this licked in a timely manner, my hat's off to him. Expect an updated version with the fix to be released any time now.

A quick solution would of been to boot the USB Drive in question into a Non-Asus mobo PC and I'm certain you would of had the GUID, that is unless this was attempted already. I know, I know, it isn't a fix, but it is a start. Cheers!

GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY!  Tom has fixed the bug!  He updated bzimage and bzroot to include support for these newer ASUS boards and now the correct GUID is made that matches my purchased key opening the door for all my 20 2TB drives.  Thank you Tom, you rock!

When it comes to unRAID, Tom's the man :)

Nice one.

Out of interest do we know what was bugged and what was the fix?

I'm guessing that it had to do with the udev component (upgraded to 1.41 in unRAID 4.5.3)-- running the older version may have been what prevented the newer motherboards from being able to read the USB GUID.

FWIW, Slackware-Current just upgraded to udev 1.51 the other day.

Yes Brit, I helped Tom with troubleshooting the issue by sending feedback and logs he requested. His main focus seemed to center around udev. It took 4 tries with new versions before the problem was nailed down. He did mention "The code to get the Flash GUID is significantly different now".

Some new herbs and spices in the bzimage which fixed the Asus GUID bug ironed out, cool. Seemed to be a weird one that it is just Asus-based boards.

Wow seems you some time on your hands to notice how much posts I'm making a day, I wasn't keeping a record, but thanks for the stats mate hehehe... No world record, I just like the forum ;D, plus I've been helping others along the way too. Cheers!

@smnas:  Im just curios what reason you make 25 posts each day and none has any meaningful to say?

Is there some world record you trying to beat?

I agree, it's annoying to have my "Show unread pasts since last visit" tick over with meaningless dribble or repition of the previous post...

  • 2 years later...

I know this problem was fixed a few years ago now, however I have come across a problem just last night. I have purchased a pro key and was running it on an old ASUS Motherboard/Athlon64 3500, but wanted to beef up the system to play around with DLNA/uPnP serving and transcoding. So I fired it up on a spare Intel DQ35JO motherboard with a E8500 and 4GB of ram. The problem is that unRAID shows a corrupted GUID that does not matched my purchased GUID. I will look for another board to try it on, but if I go back to my ASUS mothboard with the AMD CPU, it still works OK. Any Clues or has anyone else tried this combo?
