January 22, 20179 yr Hi, I am planning running this setup and need advice for an ups: M/B: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. - M5A99FX PRO R2.0 CPU: AMD FX™-8350 Eight-Core @ 4000 Memory: 8 GB (max. installable capacity 32 GB) unraid: [1:0:0:0] disk ATA ST2000DL003-9VT1 CC32 /dev/sdj 2.00TB [2:0:0:0] disk ATA ST32000542AS CC34 /dev/sdb 2.00TB [2:0:1:0] disk ATA ST2000DM001-1CH1 CC27 /dev/sdc 2.00TB [2:0:2:0] disk ATA ST32000542AS CC34 /dev/sdd 2.00TB [2:0:3:0] disk ATA ST3000DM001-1CH1 CC27 /dev/sde 3.00TB [2:0:4:0] disk ATA ST32000542AS CC34 /dev/sdf 2.00TB [2:0:5:0] disk ATA ST3000DM001-1ER1 CC25 /dev/sdg 3.00TB [2:0:6:0] disk ATA WDC WD20EZRX-00D 0A80 /dev/sdh 2.00TB [2:0:7:0] disk ATA ST2000DM001-1CH1 CC27 /dev/sdi 2.00TB [3:0:0:0] disk ATA ST2000DL003-9VT1 CC32 /dev/sdk 2.00TB [6:0:0:0] disk ATA SSD TOSHIBA-TL100 10.1 /dev/sdl 240GB [9:0:0:0] disk ATA SanDisk SDSSDXP1 1 /dev/sdm 120GB Most of my tradicional hdd´s are 7200rpm. VMs: VM gaming: running an amd r9290 VM main: nvivida gt610 No OC (cpu, gpu). Also, GPU´s + CPU watercooled (with Mcp655). I have been looking at: -Cyberpower CP1500PFCLCD or APC Back-UPS Pro 1500 (BR1500GI) It is a must that it works with official supported APCUPS pluging. I read on internet APC is noisier and does not have a real sine wave output. Would really be interested in knowing your opinion and also your personal experience. I live in Europe. Rgds
January 22, 20179 yr I'd go for the APC based on the fact it's supported natively in Unraid (Not sure about cyberpower) and that I've been using one for years.
January 22, 20179 yr Author Ok, if I go the APC route which power would I need based on my specs? I just checked that APC also offers a pure sinewave output (APC Smart-UPS 1000VA LCD 230V)..of course, it is more expensive than the APC Back-UPS Pro 1500. Which one choose? Rgds
January 22, 20179 yr Pure sinewave is better. For capacity, use this for minimums http://www.csgnetwork.com/upssizecalc.html
January 22, 20179 yr There is minimum size to hopefully give you enough time to get everything shut down cleanly, and then there is enough capacity to allow some breathing room before you start killing expensive batteries by over discharging. How often do you experience failures, and how long is the power typically out? You really don't want to routinely run a UPS below 50% battery, so bigger is better for longevity.

So not really a problem, just want to have a proper UPS to make a clean shutdown.
January 24, 20179 yr Author Hi, really can get the cyberpower ups much cheaper than the apc....can anyone confirm if it will work with the official plugin? sent from Tapatalk

January 24, 20179 yr Author So can I assume the whole built in functionality of the plugin is available wit h only one exception: ups will not shut down? Also, what are actually the implications of the ups not shutting down? Anything critical to unraid? sent from Tapatalk
January 24, 20179 yr If you have anything else still plugged in to a battery outlet and still powered on then if the UPS doesn't shutdown its battery will continue to run down. Possibly the UPS itself will run its own battery down after a long time without power. Running the UPS battery down can affect unRAID if you have your BIOS set to power up after a power restore. That would cause unRAID to boot up again and if the battery had run down too much it might not have enough power left to allow a clean shutdown if the power goes out again. Many people recommend letting unRAID power down cleanly after a relatively short time on battery so you don't run down the battery. Often if power is out for more than a few minutes it isn't coming back soon.

This is not good for the battery, and means it will take a couple hours after the power is restored for the battery to recover enough to safely bring up the server again. If you almost never have power outages, and they are almost always brief (less than 5 minutes), then the downsides aren't in play. If you are home and can manually turn off the UPS after everything is shut down properly, then no downside at all. So, the answer is, it depends.
January 24, 20179 yr Besides my unraid server, I have my cable modem, phone adapter, router and gig-switch plugged into my UPS. For this reason I do NOT want my UPS to shutdown after unRAID shuts down. Food for thought. Mike
