Just got a response from BioStar regarding the BIOSTAR TH55XE LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard:

Question:

I'm interested in building a 20 drive unRaid NAS using this board , a Core i3 processor, and the processor's integrated graphics. In order to get to 20 HDDs, I'll need to use two PCI-e SATA cards. I'm planning on using two of the SASLP-MV8 controllers from Supermicro: http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm Will I be able to use both the PCI-e x4 and PCI-ex16 slots on this board for this application? Many Thanks John

Response:

Yes, you can use both express slots for a hard drive controller.

Succint, I know, but at least it's some confirmation from the manufacturer the both of the cards should work.

Beautiful!  That's 21 disks, without counting the PCI slots or the PATA.

Now pair that with a Core-i3, and you rock!

Keep in mind that it is still largely untested and an 'in progress' concept, but this may help you:

Recommended Builds - 20 Drive Beast

And here's the thread where we discuss it a bit:

Help me design a 20 drive 'recommended build'

I just read the spec for the 20 drive beast and it says:

IPMI KVM over IP (This means that you can control every aspect of the server remotely, even BIOS! Ideal for a completely headless server hidden away in a closet or basement.)

Doesnt that require a separate add-on card?

The particular mobo listed in the '20 drive beast' build comes with built-in IPMI.  This is still a relatively new thing, so it is somewhat rare.  There are IPMI add-on cards as well, if you want to retrofit an older mobo.

I am fairly certain that you need the AOC-SIM1U+ card for the X7SBE to do IPMI.. Maybe someone with the X7SBE can confirm?

yes that is the card i have in my X7SBE and i am able to control the server remotely as if i am in front of it directly with a keyboard/mouse/monitor...

thanks

James

I stand corrected, thank you.  I'll edit the wiki.

Edit: Wow, I didn't realize those IPMI cards were so expensive.

AOC-SIM1U+ - $86.06

Starcat,

Thanks for the response, but I don't think that this build is very similar to mine.  (At least not at this point).

I'm looking for a LGA 1156 build.  I believe that the "new-ness" of this chipset is the largest part of my problem.  I'm forging ahead nonetheless.  I read through the thread that you posted, but I don't see how it applies to my planned build at this point.

If I missed something, I apologize.

Well, for the few (or zero) that are interested, I think that I'm going to abandon my planned i3 build....

I'd returned my initial poor choice of MoBo and memory and took a little hit, but that was fine...I thought that I had found a new MoBo that would suit my needs, but I hadn't ordered it yet...

Then my i3 processor didn't arrive....contact the vendor....no response...contact them again and they respond that they are out of stock.  I can pay an additional $9 to get it from another source, or wait a week or so until they get more.  Well, your website said "in stock" and the receipt said that it would ship in 24hrs.  So, that sucks, but I'll wait.  I'm not in a hurry anymore.  I get a call a few days later..."We're getting more, but the price has gone up $25.  What do you want do do???"  Well...F you.  I don't care if I have to pay more somewhere else (I wouldn't) I'm not going to patronize a company that doesn't stand by the prices that they advertise.  In truth, I just said, "Cancel."

I attempted to buy from www.futurepowerpc.com based on price and availability.  In the end, they could deliver neither.

So, I guess that I should that this all (MoBo snafu, processor non-delivery) as a sign that I should throttle back my ambitions for this build.  There were (and are) a few leaps of faith that I had to make to think that I could make this work.  At this point, all that I have paid for is the 4020 case, my PSU, the USB drive and two 2TB HDD.  All of that is compatible with any build that I choose.  So, I think that I'll go back to one of the more proven LGA 775 or an AMD board.  All I really want to do (at present) with this thing is run unRaid, pyTivo and have space for 20 HDD.  There's better/proven options out there for me to follow...

Regardless, thanks all for your advice.  I have little doubt that I'll pop up elsewhere on this board looking for help.

John
