It is family photos so the data is invaluable to me. Does anybody know of a UK based service they can recommend? A google search turned up a company called Kroll who seem highly rated Link to comment

Too late now but you really must have a backup plan. I don't backup everything but I do backup things I can't replace. Parity is not a substitute for backups. Link to comment
numanuma
If i can get it to show up, as it is XFS i should run xfs_repair /dev/sdX or mdX? Link to comment
JorgeB
mdX when it's an array disk, sdX1 when it's not. Link to comment
numanuma
slight noob reply but i'm right in thinking its sdX1 because this is a single disk i want to repair and /not/ the array? Better safe than sorry! Link to comment
JorgeB
No, the 1 is needed to indicate the first partition, not the device, when it's part of the array, mdX already represents the partition. Link to comment
numanuma
I've tried reseating the XFS drive but still nothing. Wouldnt it /not/ be spinning if it was dead? Link to comment

If is not, is it worth trying it on another motherboard? As i don't have another hard drive chipset to try it with Realised about 20 minutes ago that my nephews baby photos are on there too. I already owe all you guys beers from the first drive, i'll have to give a kidney to the guy who saves the photos! Link to comment
JorgeB
Connected it on the onboard controller using a know good port, if it's not detected there doubt it will be in a different board. Link to comment

Damn, i've tried that. A friend suggested gparted and a live USB, worth a shot? Link to comment
JorgeB
Don't see how if the disk is not detected. Link to comment
