Can I use the intel RES2SV240 alone?

Hi to everybody, I'm trying to recycle a lot of hdd and I want to attach it to my Hp microserver gen 8. So I thought to buy the Intel RES2SV240 to expand the microserver. I know that the port is only internal, but I don't care about this, I would let cables came out from empty slim ODD, not really chic solution, but no problem is hidden inside the cabinet.
The problem are 2: HP microserver gen 8 has only one slot pci-e && this slot is low-profile. Then my choice for this Intel.
So, the question is: "Can I use the Intel RES2SV240 alone in my server to attach hdd, without any controller, HBA or anything else?".

And if true, I need to something else to connect the Intel RES2SV240 to my server? I don't know, something like adapters or similar for data?

If the problem is RAID, no worry, I don't care, Jbod is my target.

No, you need an HBA, LSI recommended.

Also note that the Intel expander doesn't require a free PCIe slot, it's just for power and you can use a free slot or the molex connector for that.

The expander can be mounted anywhere, inside or even outside the case. Just needs power and SAS feeds from HBA - and to not short out. It does not need to plug into a slot, although that is a convenient place as it supplies power and avoids need to mount it somehow.

Perfect! Thanks so much for the answer! So, now I just have to find a good LSI. Any suggestion? I found the LSI Sas9211-8i, that is cheap and low-profile to. It might be good?

Yes, that works, you may need to flash it to IT mode if it's not already, but it's easy, like a bios update.

Wouldn't the MB connector (SFF-8087 in my GEN7 anyway) work with a SAS expander?  I've never tried it myself with my RES2SV240 but would be an interesting experiment.  Don't really expect it to work but thought I would ask those more knowledgeable about this.

No, the onboard controller is SATA only, on both gen7 and 8, it won't support a SAS expander.

Didn't think about that very well.  SATA isn't SAS but SAS can use SATA devices.
