10 gbe which card?

Featured Replies

I'm in the UK, could anyone reccomend a cost effective 10gbe Network card for my unraid box - I have 2 10gb ports on my switch one connecting to the rest of the network and one just wsaiting for s 10gb nic in my box :-)

Thanks in advance!

Stuart

mellanox connect-x 2 is cheap. there are also other options.

I would also like to mention that GridRunner did a descent video on it at this link -->

agree, but don't go wrong with cable - some works, some dont, it depends on your switch too.

I picked up a couple of the Mellanox Connect-X 2 cards (MNPA19-XTR) off eBay for $40 CAD each, and they're working great. Since it's in the same rack as my switch, I just got a 2m DAC cable to connect unRAID into one of my 10Gig switch ports. The second Mellanox card is in a desktop in another room so it's too far for a DAC. The necessary SFP+ modules and LC to SC duplex cable was surprisingly cheap on FibreStore.com.

That's just my setup. May not work for everyone. ;)

In my case, I'm running a Supermicro MB which has 10gbe already, and I connect it to one of the new switches from Netgear GS110EMX.

I also use a AkiTiO Thunder2 10G with my 2013 Mac Pro.  Works pretty sweet.

Of course this doesn't answer your question, but I wanted to mention my hardware in case it helps yourself or others.

I'd still probably be inclined to get the Mellanox MNPA19-XTR, but get a copper SFP+ module instead of a fiber one. Aside from being cheaper than a straight-up RJ45 10Gig NIC, lots of people seem to use these cards w/ unRAID and we know driver support is pretty good.

Something like this:

Hi schford,

If you're looking for a 10gbe nic card, Startech sells one model --> ST10000SPEXI

I have no experience with it, but you can get it from Amazon UK --> https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-1-Port-Ethernet-Network-Card/dp/B01MRJJYFR/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1518208782&sr=1-1&keywords=ST10000SPEXI

You can probably find it at other retailers there as well.

Not sure about cost effective.

Good luck.

Thanks - is this supported under unraid?

I don't know what the support is in unraid for this.

One thing I do know is that Amazon is usually good about product returns.
