Upgraded RAM, Bios shows 24gb, unraid 8

Featured Replies

Hi,

i had 2 8GB ram installed, 16 total.

Now i ordered 2x 16GB to upgrade it to 32GB.

If i install only one 16GB Server wont start (restart, restart, start no screen and after some time shutoff)

If i install 2 16GB Server wont start (restart, restart, start no screen and after some time shutoff)

If i install in slot a 8 GB and in slot b 16gb server will start normal and bios shows 8gb in a and 16gb in b.

But unraid only shows 8gb, do i need to do anything to get it working inside unraid, or is it just incompatibity?

I thought, if it shows in bios, it should work?!

(my mb officially only support max 16gb in both slots, but ive read that sometimes more can also work)

Do i need to reset anything in unraid to make a ram upgrade working?

What kind of system/motherboard is this? What kind of RAM?

I recall some older Core 2 era HP servers I've dealt with that max out at 24GB even if you install more.

Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version?

I don't know the reason for the BIOS showing it. Possibly it's just reading the SPD chip on the DIMM but that the CPU doesn't actually support that density of RAM (because the memory controller is part of the CPU).

And the QVL on the motherboard shows a maximum 8GB stick being supported.  Always check the QVL for compatibility

I know its not supported. Tryin doesnt cost anything.

I just want to know if its normal that bios shows sticks correct, but they dont show in unraid... I always understanted that if bios shows everything, it should work.

I updated bios via internal tool from them but it seems to not work (it downloads and restarts and then wants to install the same thing over and over again)

In bios it shows

Stick a: 8GB 1600

Stick b: 16GB 1600 with correct manufacturer.

Total: 24gb.

That statement right there is the telling factor.

Doesn't matter what the BIOS shows as installed, only the 8GB stick is available for use. Period.

So i will get a new MB i guess.

16GB DDR3 are rather uncommon, except ECC registered DIMMs, and likely unsupported, H81 boards only support 2 x 8GB max.

  • Author

I already know that.

Still, other configurations can work.

My only question was if its normal that bios shows its working, unraid not.

It can't work in Unraid or any other OS since it's not supported by the board.

So boards can show ram, even its not working?

Yes, it's a bios bug

For that socket you need a board with 4 DIMM sockets, the one linked will work, with 4 x 8GB, not likely to work with that 16GB DIMM, do you have a p/n for it?

part number or model number

I think the best i found is this:

ASRock B85M DASH/OL R2.0 (90-MXGXU0-A0UAYZ)

Did you try just using that DIMM on its won, does Unraid recognize 16GB?

Like i wrote, it wont start with only 1 stick or 2 new sticks.

Only with 1 old and one new stick...

Like i wrote,

Yeah, sorry, didn't read the entire thread, though not surprised the 16GB doesn't work.

Yeah. It was just a test. Some said it can work with other specifications, but i always thought like if it shows in bios, it should work in OS too.
