November 20, 201015 yr It's already in the wiki. I described the same process for a Mac and instruction for the windows side are also there I believe. I searched for it prostuff, but couldn't find it so I added the basic info in the troubleshooting section here. The one i was referring to is here.
November 21, 201015 yr I followed all of your instructions exactly as you posted, Spectrum. It still did not work. Then I modified lmhosts.sam and tried several different formats of writing it to no avail. My unRAID server now has a static IP and is named "media." when I type "//media" into the browser without the quotation marks of course, it turns to: http://www1.dlinksearch.com/main?url=media I still have a feeling that it may be something with my DIR-655 router but I don't know much about it. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help so far guys, this is a great community by the way. Uncheck "Enable Advanced DNS Service" in your router to stop the www1.dlinksearch.com URLs from appearing. You can also set a permanent/static address for your server in the router.
November 23, 201015 yr Author The preclearing process of both my 2TB drives has officially finished. I received emails with the subjects: Preclear: PASS! Preclearing Disk sda Finished!!! Cycle 1 of 1 and Preclear: PASS! Preclearing Disk sdb Finished!!! Cycle 1 of 1 I also typed in screen: grep preclear /var/log/syslog | todos >> /boot/preclear_results.txt in order to save the results of my hard drives onto the usb drive. Now are the results that I was email enough for you guys to analyze and let me know my drives are healthy or should I remove the flash drive and post the results from the .txt file? If everything is well, I have to move on to transferring my data to my new unRAID server. I currently have all my data stored on a DNS-321 NAS device. What is the best way of moving my data over? Should I set Disk Device1 and transfer all my stuff and after the has completed set my parity device? Edit: I noticed on the Configuration Tutorial that you can connect the old hard drive with data on it directly in the unRAID box and transfer that way. My DNS-321 formatted my hard drive to ext2 or ext3 (can't remember which), would unRAID recognize that file system or would I have to transfer over the network?
November 23, 201015 yr If you want someone to take a look at your preclear results, you can grab them from \\media\flash\preclear_results.txt (if you haven't changed your export settings for the flash drive) and post those to the preclear results thread in the software forum. There is a link to that thread in the config tut. As for setting the parity drive now or later it is up to you if you want faster copies and no protection from single drive failure (no parity) or slower copies with protection from single drive failure (with parity). I opted for the faster copies when I set mine up, but you can do as you please From this post it looks like UnRAID should be able to mount ext2 (and ext3 can be mounted as ext2) so you should be able to mount the drive. Just mount it with the -ro option so it mounts read only and your data will be protected from rogue writes.
November 23, 201015 yr Post your pre-clear results here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4068.0
December 2, 201015 yr Author I just received my 2TB Seagate hard drive model: ST32000432AS and updated the firmware to CC35. I then ran the preclear script and right before starting it I noticed it said something different than it had showed with my other drives. Instead of showing the typical: Pre-Clear unRAID Disk ######################################################################## Device Model: WDC WD20EARS-00J2GB0 Serial Number: WD-WCAYYXXXXXXX Firmware Version: 80.00A80 User Capacity: 2,000,398,934,016 bytes Disk /dev/sde: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders, total 3907029168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sde1 63 3907029167 1953514552+ 0 Empty Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary. ######################################################################## Are you absolutely sure you want to clear this drive? (Answer Yes to continue. Capital 'Y', lower case 'es'): It showed all of the first part except at the end it stated: Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table ############################################## Are you absolutely sure you want to clear this drive? (Answer Yes to continue. Capital 'Y' , lower case 'es'): I went ahead and ran the preclear script anyways. Was that wise or does that indicate something is wrong with the drive and I should return it?
December 2, 201015 yr I recall seeing that message when i precleared my last few drives the Disk /dev/sd* doesn't contain a valid partition table
December 2, 201015 yr I recall seeing that message when i precleared my last few drives the Disk /dev/sd* doesn't contain a valid partition table A brand new drive will never contain a valid partition table. It is not present until the drive is first partitioned. (The pre-clearing process does create a partition table, so you'll not see that message going forward with that drive) Joe L.
