How to set up unRAID notification using Gmail SMTP settings

In my case, none of these were true - I'm on a personal account and I've had 2FA enabled for years - but it still wouldn't show me the App Passwords option. I poked around for a while and eventually found that the url https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords works even though it doesn't show up in the security settings.

After that, when I did finally get google to give me an app password, I tried just copy-pasting it to unraid, but that got an authentication error. Eventually I realized that even though the password was really 16-characters, google had put spaces after every 4 characters for readability (or whatever), so when I copy-pasted I got extra spaces that weren't part of the password. I had to paste it into a notepad, delete the spaces, then copy it into unraid.

OOOooooooh, I never thought about them putting extra spaces in there.  I may have to revisit this.  Ironically I've really become fond of using discord for my notifications, as that is seeming to become more supported on other devices, so everything comes to one chat room.

But thanks on the heads up on the password, I'll give it a try again.

If there are still people have trouble to set up notifications via gmail like me this solution works for now:

  1. Login to your Google Account
  2. On the left panel click on "Security"
  3. Click on 2FA
  4. Scroll down to App passwords
  5. Click on the arrow

There you can set a new app password.

My god!!! Thank you dude!!! Same situation as you, 2FA on for years, no app password tab, your link saved me the headache.

Today my email notifications from my Gmail account to my Hotmail account stopped working.  So I created a new Gmail account, set up 2FA, set up an app password, removed the spaces, and tried to get it working.  No worky.  I tried reversing it with my Hotmail account. No worky.  Did something change?  My settings seem fine and I didn't make any Unraid changes so I'm a bit perplexed why the working account worked and now IO can't a brand new account working.  Am I missing something obvious???  Anyone else having issues all of a sudden?

This is the way.... thanks for that direct URL to the APP PASSWORDS page. This did the trick for me as the current layout on the security section is a merry-go-round.

App passwords are only available certain accounts it seems.

I think App Passwords just require it to be a personal account and have 2FA enabled.

There must be something else to it because this is a personal account with 2FA.

Try redoing the MFA, I've seen that exact same thing.

So April 2025 after reading all through this thread I have managed to set up Gmail notification. Here is the information I got from various posters in this thread, condensed into one manifest:

1. My sending Gmail account is 18 years old. I did not have 2FA on it, but I turned it on.

2. App Passwords did not appear in my Google Account. I had to manually edit the Google Account page link to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords .

3. I created an Unraid app password. This was presented as 4 groups of 4 characters. Remove the spaces, it should be one phrase of 16 chars.

4. Unraid server settings:

important are:

- Preset service:  Gmail with TLS.

- Mail server port: 587 (should be set automagically when selecting with TLS)

- Use STARTTLS:  Yes

- Username: I used the full @gmail.com extension.

- Password:  the aforementioned 16 char passphrase.

And hey presto! I got mail.  *insert happy dance*
