  1. So got home from work today and checked free ram. Still looks good! free -m report 2671 MB free!! Unfortunately, the webGui is once again unresponsive.... Shares work fine. Putty connects normally. UnMenu frame loads, but unRaid gui refuses to load... . SysLog attached! Thanks in advance for any help provided!!! I'm confident that downgrading back to 6a will fix this issue, but I was kinda hoping to add a couple of 3TB drives to the array! Cheers, DB syslog1of2.txt
  2. You may also want to consider looking at a lower wattage cpu: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=athlon+45w&hl=en&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1280&bih=784&safe=images&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7284789031573264174&sa=X&ei=YOs6TviwJczdgQeKlKzPBg&ved=0CGQQ8wIwBjgK Runs about the same price, and performs almost as well (And still twice as powerful as the commonly used Sempron 140): http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+II+X2+240e Should save you a bit in electricity over the long run...
  3. I've been running problem free on 5.0 beta 6a for 2 or 3 months and decided to upgrade to the latest beta (beta10). Upgrade went fine. Everything looked as it should. August 1st rolled around and my automated parity check started as usual. Server ran through the most of the parity check, sending me the usual hourly update emails, but then stopped sending emails.... Shares were still working, I could Putty into unRaid, but the webGUI no longer came up... Not sure if parity check completed, as I could not access the gui. I tried to manually unmount everything and reboot the server using instructions from Joe in the forum. Drives all unmounted, but system would refuse to reboot. Eventually I had to reset via power button... Ran parity check a second time, with the same results. This time I checked the free memory and saw that there was only 50MB left out of 4 gigs. I killed all the processes I could, and that made the unMenu GUI appear, though the unRaid GUI still would not show (I would just get the UnMenu frame and UnMenu tools pages), and still did not want to gracefully reboot. Currently running Parity check for a third time after another hard reboot. This time I killed everything (SabNZB, SickBeard, Transmission, Cache_Dirs) before running it and it seems to be doing better (8 more hours to go and 2.5GB remaining memory). 2 other observations: 1. Parity check seems slower then usual: Running at about 30-35 MB/s when I'm fairly sure with 5.0-beta6a it would run significantly faster 2. Drives are running hotter during parity. I've never had a temp warning before in the new case (Norco 4224), and both initial parity checks had a couple of drives hitting 45-47 degrees... (This may be completely unrelated to the above issues and just be a middle-of-summer thing) I bring this up because I've been seeing a few posts lately with server hanging/webGui not loading issues and thought it might be of some value if it turns out to be a bug in the new beta... Any other ideas what could be the issue here? I've been running parity checks with all those addons enabled for months without issue. The only variable that has changed is that I upgrade to beta10... I'm currently not home so can't access my server to post logs, but thought I'd post to get some input from the experts as to what might be occurring... 4. If you search, you should find some of my posts regarding this topic, but to make it easy, this is what I bought, and am quite pleased: StarTech Rack: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816129048 Gruber Rails: http://www.cablesandkits.com/gruber-rack-mount-adjustable-rails-black-p-2721.html You should be able to source those parts from somewhere else, especially as NewEgg shipping on the rack is crazy expensive... I bought 2 sets of the Gruber rails, and use one for my 4224, and the other set for my rack-mounted APC backup. There's enough room above the 4224 that I can remove the top of the case to get into the internals, without having to pull it out of the rack. NOTE: The server case and APC Backup do not bolt into these rails! They sits on them, like a shelf (The rails are about 2 or 3 inches wide). Assuming you don't plan on moving your rack up and down stairs, you should be fine. You could bolt them into your rack at the front of the case if you really feel it necessary, but I did not. The biggest advantage is you don't have to worry about screw holes not lining up between different manufacturers' products... Norco rails would be safer, as far as lining up with the 4224 screw-holes, but I've seen some mixed reviews. Some folks like them, others... not so much. HTH!
  5. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145493 $119 - $10 Rebate = $109 I have 2 already precleared and waiting that I got @ 129, but this makes me want to grab another couple... AND Free Shipping!!! If you've been waiting, this is the best I've ever seen (North of the border)!!!!
  6. Those can certainly be a pain in the ass to troubleshoot! Thanks for letting us know what the issue turned out being. It's always helpful to close the loop on weird stuff like this to help the next person who may have similar issues!! Hopefully this means you've changed your mind about UnRaid and come back to the community! Personally, I can't imagine my network without it at this point.... I'd have to *shudder* go back to external drives and..... *gulp* dvd-roms!!! Backing up critical data on plastic and dye?? No redundancy? No parity??? What was I thinking??!!!

    Got WAF

SSSShhhhh! Best to focus on the digital ease-of-use aspect!!!
  8. For the record, I voted as a one time pre-clear, but I've since started pre-clearing 3 times because of this thread! It helps to buy drives well ahead of when they are actually needed DB.
  9. I just picked one up from Newegg for my laptop, but might not be suitable for a desktop (No external antennas etc. I figure if portability isn't an issue, may as well get a bigger guy with better reception). In my searches for a good adapter, however, I came across some sold by Monoprice that seem to get excellent reviews. You might want to check them out... (And dirt cheap!)
  10. CANADA Also, another deal site for Canada is the new Canada Post shopper. I used to use shopbot.ca exclusively, but lately the CP has been giving me better results CanadaPost Shopper
  11. I'm fairly sure you can order it online to be delivered, however in my experience, prices online are often a bit more than in-store. You might save a few more bucks if you buy it at a warehouse... No guarantees of course...
  12. Finally! The tables are turned! Frankly, I've made more trips to the US border to pick up stuff in the last year than I did in the decade before. I'm a sucker for good deals, and when the exchange rate actually gives me money... Oh Yeah!
  13. A dual core CPU will benefit add-ons that deal with video encoding and transcoding such as air-video, handbrake (video encoding), PS3MS, etc. It will also benefit VMs. If you aren't using any of these add-ons, then stick with the single core. Another thing you might want to consider when making the decision, is what kind of person you are. Are you a set-it-and-forget-it sort, or do you like to tinker/mess about/tweak? I'm more of a tinker-er, and initially bought the Sempron (As all I was doing was server content). Once I got comfortable with UnRaid, I started running more apps and doing some encoding/transcoding and decided a multi-core cpu was necessary. Looking back, I probably should have gone straight to the multi-core cpu and save myself the $40 I spent on the Sempron... If, on the other hand, you're going to build it to serve files primarily, and then move on, the Sempron would be more than enough. A faster CPU will just cost you more up front $, and use a bit more electricity... Of course, now I have an extra CPU that is just begging to be put to use, so I suppose it's my duty to build another UnRaid server
  14. Frankly, after reading grandprix's post about non-pure sinewaves, I got a little nervous and did some more googling. From what I gather, everything he said was accurate, however Corsair, at least, claims it's a non-issue with their active PFC power supplies. Here's a sample of what one Corsair Rep responded with: Source Makes me feel a little more comfortable about my recent purchase of a APC SC1000 which uses a Stepped approximation to a sinewave. My Corsair TX750 doesn't seem to make any noise at all when on battery power (Though the UPS hums like crazy). That said, some other info I pulled from the web, does add the caveat that this is only for N. America (120v) Note: No personal knowledge. Merely repeating info pulled from various forums...
  15. Very Interesting! Thanks for telling us about your results!
  16. How did this science project work out? I'd love to hear more details!...
  17. For you SmartA$$es, the math doesn't work out exact because the rebate is in US dollars, the sell price is in CDN (What's that you say? The CDN dollar is worth more then the US$ What is this topsy-turvy world we live in???)
  18. Not as good a deal as the 2TB, but still a great price! http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=59651&vpn=0S03230&manufacture=Hitachi&promoid=1323 Downsize them to 2.2TB until Unraid supports them, then remove the artificial HPA and squeeze another 800GB out of them!
  19. Cheapest price I've seen! NCIX is selling these guys for $69.79 + $10 mail-in rebate http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=59671&vpn=0F12117&manufacture=Hitachi&promoid=1323 Total: CDN$59.94
  20. Ahhh. Understood! I received the usb -> serial cable when I bought the UPS, and assumed you had one as well.
  21. I believe it's one of those weird issues where most people are using it without problem, but a few isolated cases are having issues. Though I haven't looked into it in depth, it may also be related to what add-on cards are being used in the systems. Between the 2 boards you listed, I would go with the Jetway, simply because it seems to be problem free. As far as single and dual core, the single core Sempron 140 should be fine for what you want to currently use it for. The dual core chip would help if you start doing more processor intensive stuff like video processing, unRaring etc... Here in Canada, you're looking at about a $10 premium between the Sempron 140 and a x2 245 (The x2 has a higher maximum power draw, but not significantly more - 45w vs 65w). A comparable 45w multicore chip is going to run you closer to $100.
  22. Surprising! Is it an old fan? If so, it could be gummed up with dust etc., which would add to the fan noise... In my case, the case and PSU fans drowned out any noise the cpu fan was making (in my Centurion 590 case).
  23. The Supermicro board uses the Realtek 8111C nic. There seems to be a number of people on these boards having odd issues with that nic. I'd go with the Jetway board, myself. Also, I'm not sure why you are selecting a dual core chip for the SuperMicro, and single for the Jetway. If you're looking to run addons etc, there's lots of great multi core chips on the AMD side... I'd look at some of the low-wattage models to save a bit of cash over the long run (I'm using the x4 600e, and I'm very pleased with the performance and wattage consumption vs. the Sempron 140 I had before)...
  24. In my experience, the cpu fan on the Sempron 140 is quiet enough to be inaudible, when paired with case fans and PS fan. I would look at swapping out stock case fans for quieter fans first. What case fans are you currently using? Also, if you are using 80mm case fans, upsizing to 120mm fans can make quite a difference... They will move a similar amount of air, but spin at a slower speed.
