  1. Not as good as last deal, as shipping is not free, but price is still reasonable for a 3tb drive... Shipping I believe is $7.99... http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_210_212&item_id=042242 Note: See previous thread re: this drive for some comments regarding firmware etc... Looks like the price is good until July 2nd
  2. EDIT: OUT OF STOCK Online. As the subject states. Website claims 3 years warranty, but fairly sure it is only 1. Price is pretty solid though... http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX36849?utm_source=eFlyer&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Jun2012_72HourSale Limit 1 per customer.... Sale Ends: 6/18/2012 9:00:00 PM (11pm EST)
  3. FYI: Deal seems to still be available! Also, in a forum post for the drive (scroll down and click on the warranty question), a user claims he contacted Hitachi who stated the drive has a 3 year warranty... (I have not confirmed this, just passing on what I read!!) "Hitachi GST has confirmed the warranty as being 3 years -- took about 48 hours to get a respons from them via e-mail but it's very nice to see three years on a drive considerig other manufacturers are down to 2 (WD) or 1 (Seagate) years. "
  4. Max 2 per customer http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=67570&promoid=1058 $10 for 1-day shipping Special price ends 5/2/2012. EDIT: Deal still on!... EDIT: Deal is over.
  5. Limit 2 per customer http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=25350DR0713&vpn=WD30EZRS&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD I believe warranty is 2 years now on these drives...
  6. Excellent! Can't wait to see it! Assuming the news is good, they keep dropping in price, and assuming Hitachi keeps making them (Not sure what the deal is with the whole take over thing), these will be my go-to drive!
  7. As the subject states! Anyone have one in use yet? They're starting to show up in stores now (See Good Deals thread) DB.
  8. Very Nice! That's promising to see! These might actually be affordable in a few months! A bit disappointed that Google shopping didn't see that though. It's normally pretty good at finding the deals!! It is still more then I would currently pay... Though ask me again when my 3.5TB of empty space is down to < 1TB...
  9. I found what appears to be a legit store (5-star rating on 4500 reviews on google.com) selling the new 4TB Hitachi drive for $30 under MSRP. Still a crazy amount of $ for a drive, but for those with extremely limited upgrade space and can't wait for the price to drop in the next 6 months.... http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0S03364/ DB
  10. Excellent! Thanks for reporting back! . Will you be able to re-use the external case with another drive, or did you have to break it to open it?
  11. @ Direct Canada http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=25350DR0713&vpn=WD30EZRS&manufacture=Western%20Digital%20WD Cheers, DB.
  12. You're not kidding! I'd be curious to see if others are seeing those speeds as well with that router. That's encroaching on wired gigabit speeds!
  13. I get 24-27MB/s using the AirPort Extremes. That's crazy fast!! From my experience, and what I've read online, an average setup, in an average home, without crazy optimization, will rarely break 10 MB/s. Perhaps 3-4 was a bit on the low side, but certainly not uncommon...
  14. This is a valid point. Which is why it's a good idea to buy from somewhere like Amazon, where they will take back the adapters without charge, if they don't work out in your location. The nice thing about powerline ethernet, is that if it does work reasonably well for you (No one gets the max rated speeds, but you should see 10/100 speeds or more), it rarely fluxuates... which is important for video streaming...
  15. There's definitely something wrong. Whether it's your settings or not, I can't say, but you should be getting significantly faster transfers then 200-700 kbps. On wireless-g, I believe a fairly average connection should be getting something along the lines of 1-2 MB/s, I believe wireless n usually works around the 3-4 MB/s. As an aside, are you sure you don't mean 200 - 700 KB/s? (which is still much too slow to be very useable)...
  16. If you're going to start spending $$, and assuming that a wired connection is not an option, I would seriously look into Powerline Ethernet. Much faster then wireless, AND much more stable. A studio apartment is not the optimal setup, but definitely worth looking into. I've never been a fan of wireless for anything but surfing/email. It's just too slow and easily disrupted (microwave, conflicting neighbours' networks etc..). my 2cents. EDIT: I'm seeing a bunch of solid starter kits (2 adapters - one at source, one at destination), for under $80 total. Just make sure to go with 200 mbps/500 mbps. The 85mbps units are too slow. Check out SmallNetBuilder for reviews . http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=powerline+ethernet
  17. Another external drive deal. If you're desperate and willing to take the chance of it having a non-standard interface (I've read about some drives in external enclosures not having a sata connection), or voiding your warranty by removing it from the enclosure: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136876&Tpk=elements%203tb&AID=10657534&PID=749547&SID=forums&nm_mc=AFC-C8junctionCA Enjoy!

    Tablet...

Another option is this little number: http://www.amazon.com/Pan-TC-970-9-7-Inch-Multi-Touch/dp/B004PGMFG2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322085314&sr=8-1 I don't own one, and have never used one, but I am tempted to get it as it is one of the only sub $200 tablets that gets consistently excellent reviews... Anyone have experience with it? [EDIT] This tablet is not upgradeable past it's current Android 2.2... But what can you expect for $198? . [/EDIT]
  19. Doh! Wish I had seen the article before prices went up . I had no idea this was happening! Even though I have 5 or 6 TBs of head room, I couldn't help but go online and try and find a cheaper price so I could hoard some!
  20. There's also a great script floating around the forum for controlling fan speed via pwm, based on hard drive temps. You could use that to shut the fans off completely at a specified threshold level, should you so desire...
  21. Also, if you're looking, don't limit yourself to the Revo. Zotec has some gorgeous little units, and there are some slightly cheaper brands (jetway?) as well. So long as you stick with the nvidia/intel chipset, you should be fine...
  22. 1. Don't do what I did! . I bought the Revo with an OS. That was a mistake. Never once used the Windows 7 partition. Buy a barebones model and add ram and drive yourself (I recommend a small ssd drive. Sooooo fast!) 2. Stick with something with the ion chipset. You get video hardware decoding on the GPU and flawless 1080p playback. 3. Mine has the Ion 1/330 chipset and I don't believe the newer Ion 2 /525 chipset performs any better in this application (It may even do worse). You'll want to confirm that though. Just going by memory. There may also be something new out there I'm not aware of. There are some bitstreaming issues with Dolby Master Audio and TrueHD that I don't have time to get into though, that some of the settop players do not have. I believe the issues are being addressed in the next version of XBMC, but who knows how long before that comes out. Not a deal breaker for me, as I just send the core DTS to my receiver and then matrix the side channels to the back speakers and it sounds great to me!
  23. In my opinion, XBMC is not a competitor, but more like the gold standard. Everyone wants to be like XBMC. In my search for a media player/Streamer, I started with the WD Live, but was disappointed with the GUI. Like the rest of the settop media players out there at the time, the GUI looked like it was designed by... well... developers. Functional and useable but UUUGGGLLY! In my search for a better player, all the reviews I was reading kept comparing the devices' GUI to XBMC's. It was at that point that I decided that rather than try and find a settop box that was close to XBMC, I would just go with XBMC! In the immortal words of Morpheus: Best decision I ever made. Once you go XBMC, there ain't no going back!
