  1. I am just blown away by this sentence. This is just how I feel. LOL - and until now I wasn't sure I did! It has just cemented my plan for a backup server! I don't have the money to keep it off site like I would like but baring some act of god or some idiot with a grudge against my country I'll feel safe!
  2. Or it could be that something is using them and is preventing them from spinning down. Glance at the reads/writes over a 15 minute period when you are sure nothing should be using them and see if that is in fact the case.
  3. What do people think of this solution: First the new fans. I am thinking 2x Noctua 120mm fans. These seem to have switches for manual control as well as being able to be temperature controlled. http://www.cplonline.com.au/noctua-120mm-nf-s12a-flx-1200rpm-fan.html Now I see that my P8B75-M LE Motherboard only has 1 case fan connector. So I figure I can do the following: There are currently 2 x 180mm Antec Tri Cool Case fans at the top (as indicated in earlier post). I currently have one into the motherboard case fan connector and one via a Y cable into one of the molex connectors from the PSU. This was not an issue as these fans I manually control (L,M,H) from a switch panel at the back of the case. I figurer however I can buy one of these PWM 1-to-4 Splitter Cables http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=17923&cPath=1344 If I read right I can plug all 4 fans into that splitter as well as a molex from the PSU and then one connection into the Motherboard case fan connector. This "I think" will let me control all 4 fans via the Motherboard Connector (Temperature Control) while still allowing a manual default (L,M,H) from the switches on the fans. Am I on the right track here?
  4. Here is what I think might help. The case has space for 2 120mm optional fans behind the drive bays!! :-) From the Antec Website: There are three optional 120mm fan mounts – two front fans and a middle fan (at the rear of the upper HDD cage). These three fans should be installed so that the air is blowing into the case from the front. Front Fans – The front fans are designed to enhance the HDD cooling. I have attached a diagram mockup! It appears to me that with these two 120mm fans blowing on the drives and the two 140mm exhaust fans this should be more than adequate airflow!?
  5. I am a grade A+ moron! Probably one of the very few A+'s I've ever had too! I know I built this rig 2 years ago but I can't believe I didn't look at cooling more. I've been building gaming rigs for years, anyway, I would appreciate some help as to what to do with the current fans and where I might mount more fans to cool my system down! It only has two fans as indicated by the drawing. Both mounted to exhaust. They are both at the top ..... I would appreciate any suggestions the community might have! P.S. I guess there is another fan, but it is exhaust too and it is on the PSU.
  6. Hmmm - really? Maybe it really is my setup then! I have attached two photos. 1 of the bottom of the case with 4 disks in a cage. 1 of the top part of the cage near the motherboard. Just in case this helps any comments ....
  7. Hi All, I was just reading the following thread: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=22608.0 Basically I was reading this as a result of some initially concerning temperatures of my HDD's inside my Unraid Tower. But then I paused and am a little confused as to why I am experiencing these. I am in the middle of adding a new drive (and pre clearing it) and it is half way through pass 1. As I have just installed it I decided I would leave both sides of the case off just in case I had knocked a cable etc. The ambient temperature in the room is about 15'C (as I have the split system running) and 21'C outside. It has been a warm day though with tops of 30'C. Despite the aircon being on all day the box is in a room which has ultimate light - in that it is almost all windows and gets a fair bit of sun. Australia! However, the temps have been low outside too for some 5 hours now. And Dark for 2 Hours. Temps are: Parity: None as it is off. Disk 1: 39'C Disk 2: 39'C Disk 3: 39'C Disk 4 39'C Cache: 42'C New Disk: 46'C The box is currently doing the following: Streaming a HD movie from the array, Copying lots of files from an old box to the array via the ftp server (which is going to the cache drive of course) as well as the pre clear of the new drive via screen. I wouldn't have expected these temperatures. They are all WD. The array disks, cache and parity are all WD Red 3TB and the new drive is WD Green 2TB. I checked the operating temps of the reds and the manufacturer says Op Temp up to 70'C. The Green a little lower. I feel there is nice airflow in the room and like I said both sides of the Antec P193 case are off. Does anyone have any opinions!? P.S. checked the CPU temp just to see what another components temp is and its only 31'C.
  8. I've just read the entire thread and am "almost" taking a few things away from it .... 1. No issue with this being a parity drive (especially if the protected array is filled with these disks too); 2. No issue with this being a data drive (especially given I use a Cache Drive); 3. Read speeds are not really and issue, write speeds are (once again if your are using a Cache Drive this is somewhat moot); 4. For media storage and streaming I don't see performance downsides vs the WD Red's I am using now; 5. The cost upsides are huge. 260 x 5 (1 parity) + 150 for 500GB Cache Drive = 32TB Storage for $1450!!!! P.S. And ..... 3yr Warranty, which is what WD give their Red NAS drives!!! WoW!!!!!
  9. Well, I guess the topic says it all! Before I discovered Unraid I had a (I think its fair to say) very reliable ReadyNas NV+. But I made the switch to an Unraid server and haven't looked back. Just moved house though and found the thing full of 2TB WD GREEN EARS disks - what to do with it? Its not really valid as back-up as my Unraid Array is 9TB and I am building a second Unraid Server as my backup. I think I am going to throw one of the 2TB drives into my Unraid server as my cache drive as the current 3TB Red performing that role is a bit of a waste of space. Any suggestions?
  10. I don't think so. I think the time has come for a bit of planned work. Isolate the fault. You seem to have all the tools you need. This is what I would do. At least then you can stop looking elsewhere. Create a separate Ubuntu Live CD Boot USB. Copy a video you know buffers to the USB drive. [glow=red,2,300]**WARNING** [/glow]Boot your Unraid box from that USB drive. [glow=red,2,300]**WARNING** [/glow] [glow=red,2,300]**WARNING** [/glow] I'd be making sure that ALL my Unraid disks are disconnected from the Motherboard as to not have/allow Ubuntu in any way interact with them[glow=red,2,300] **WARNING**[/glow] Share the video using Ubuntu (using the same protocol as in UNRAID). Map that share (using the same protocol) in your Kodi client. Play it and see if it buffers. If it does not buffer than I would be thinking this tells me that it has to be something inside the Unraid box (baring the non storage components) - be it the Array, a disk, settings etc. If it does still buffer then try isolating the fault with the Kodi client. You seem to have a PC / Mac as well as what currently Kodi is installed on having the issue. Use it - Kodi is great because it works on almost any platform. Install Kodi on this other machine. Attach it to your Gigabit LAN. Map the Unraid share. Try and play. See if it Buffers. If still no joy then moving on to doing a similar thing with parts in your network setup. I know it sounds like allot and perhaps others will have a simpler process for you but thats what I would do to be sure to be sure! :-) Be methodical, plan it out, post the plan on the board once your'e done and ask for opinions. Write each part in your setup down in a list and cross it off as you test whether it has an issue. Good Luck.
  11. What h/w do you use to run Kodi? What version of Kodi are you running? I had issues with running HD content to a low power Android machine (PIVOS XIOS) which matches your issue. It was in the bedroom with no receiver (but in some cases worked fine in the living room connected to the receiver with passthrough enabled). I sort of concluded that it was due to the little thing trying to do something in software that its heart couldn't handle. The NAS and the network were fine - then I bought an NUC and threw Openelec on it. No issues at all - no matter where I place it - living room installed in the media setup connected to the receiver or in the bedroom. It appears to me I needed a higher spec player for the HD content I have. Note: I tested this by running SD content on the Pivos box and got no buffering issues at all. So I tend to limit what I watch in the bedroom to SD content. In addition, what method are you using to access the content SMB, NFS? I have had issues using HD content to XBMC over SMB shares back a few Kodi versions back. Buffering buffering .... I switched to NFS and all went well. One last thought, some of these players (e.g the XIOS) don't have much internal space and that can cause Kodi to appear slow. In my situation I had to run a script to migrate the user data dir to the sd card. Faster and more space. That worked for that issue. Not all of this is related, but I hope some it helps you!! I feel your issues are more player related that Unraid but I have nothing to base that on yet other than a gut feeling.
  12. Thank you. I was just trawling the search results at the topmost level using search term "registration key" Time to buy!!!
  13. Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to have a link or a post which references this offer. It doesn't appear to me to be advertised on the main site and a quick Google search doesn't bring it up either?
  14. Hi, When I bought Unraid a couple of years back I bought only a single Pro licence. This was a mistake. The more I get involved with the features of Unraid, development of new versions, tinkering and more importantly my need for a backup I realise I want to build another server. Does anyone know if Limetech offer the ability to take advantage of the 2 key pack offer price ex post facto of a single licence purchase? Thanks, Daniel
  15. Hi, I had a very similar issue. I don't know if we share the same problem but I will summarise it for you and perhaps it will help. Do the files you are copying already exist on the array? - in that are the foldernames/filenames the same? If so, it appears to me that Unraid will try to overwrite the folders/files in its current location on the array. In my example I use a cache disk. What I kept getting an error when the Mover tried to run that the disk was full. It was copying a folder to the array that was about 750GB in size. I expected it to copy to another disk but it wasn't, no matter what I did I couldn't get it to choose another disk. However, new files I tried to copy to the array went over onto a new disk just fine. What I realised was that the folder the mover was copying already existed, so that location was always going to be where Unraid was going to put them. This all stemmed because I had not had the right split level in the first place. My way around it was to move some files from that disk manually to another disk thus leaving enough room (and plenty to spare) for those on the cache disk to be transferred over on the next Mover run. That worked and since then the Mover has selected another disk each time since (and also because I don't think I have tried to overwrite anything). I also decided at that point to set my Split Level to 99, thus effectively disabling it. Like I said, this might or might not help. Hope it does. Daniel.
  16. Thanks, I had missed that! I think I will do that actually and save a bit more money before Christmas. You also prompted me to have a look inside my Antec P183 V3 for space etc. I have the bottom cage filled and have 1 disk in the cage above that. Ill stick the new 6TB in that cage but will have to look at buying some 5in3's for the future. I know I can get up to 12 disks in there! Also had a look at my SATA ports and there is only one port left. An expansion card or 2 is going to be required too. Sigh, more research - but at least I can get one disk in there now! The Motherboard I have (P8B75-M LX - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8B75M_LE/specifications/) has 5 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue 1 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), grey -I feel my Cache drive should be on the 6Gbps port and the 5 3TB drives should be on the 3Gb/s port!
  17. I completely misunderstood. Thats excellent news. Thank you. I was reading the guide last night before I went to bed and it is excellent. Thanks for confirming it for me. Maybe I was tired but it makes sense now. I guess the Cache drive could be any size but would most likely be based on how much I download in any 24 hour period (between mover executions) - given I don't get close to filling 3TB in any one 24 hour period - I can leave that drive as is. [EDIT] Orrrrr ..... a smaller SSD Cache drive is sounding better now too! So my task becomes replacing the Parity with a 6TB drive and adding another 6TB drive (and the old Parity drive) to the array. Doesn't appear that anything I do hear impacts my future upgrading to 6.x either so all is good. Ill report how it goes! Thanks guys!
  18. Hi, I have just noticed that my NAS is getting very full so I thought it time to add some more disks. My plan is laid out below but I have a few questions I hope people in the know will indulge me with. I run Unraid 5.04. System: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. - P8B75-M LX CPU: Intel® Celeron® CPU G550 @ 2.60GHz Cache: 32 kB, 256 kB, 2048 kB Memory: 4096 MB (max. 16 GB) Total Usage: 94% Parity: WDC_WD30EFRX-68AX9N0_WD-WMC1T2161763 (sdc) 36 °C 3 TB 14,087,050 1,635,992 0 Disk 1: WDC_WD30EFRX-68AX9N0_WD-WMC1T1731539 (sdd) 38 °C 3 TB 2.83 TB 169 GB 9,531,627 2461 0 Browse /mnt/disk1 Disk 2: WDC_WD30EFRX-68AX9N0_WD-WMC1T2270167 (sde) 35 °C 3 TB 2.82 TB 185 GB 11,460,525 512,709 0 Browse /mnt/disk2 Disk 3: WDC_WD30EFRX-68AX9N0_WD-WMC1T1962776 (sdf) 35 °C 3 TB 2.82 TB 185 GB 14,554,975 1,124,688 0 Browse /mnt/disk3 Cache: WDC_WD30EFRX-68AX9N0_WD-WMC1T1955103 (sdb) 37 °C 3 TB 859 GB 2.14 TB 23,960,378 10,701,636 0 Browse /mnt/cache I plan on buy 2x WD Red 6TB NAS HDD 3.5" 6Gb/s Intellipower WD60EFRX (http://www.cplonline.com.au/wd-red-6tb-nas-hdd-3-5-6gb-s-intellipower-wd60efrx.html). I see no benefit in getting the WD Red Pro drives. I would have stumped with a Seagate NAS drive if everything I have already wasn't WD. I like uniformity - even if it is pointless. I am buying 2 because I believe I have to increase the size of my Cache drive to match the largest drive in the array. I plan on installing the two drives. Then in the Admin GUI moving the existing 3TB cache drive into the array. Adding a 6TB drive as the Cache. Then adding another 6TB drive into the array. Then let the magic happen. Q1. What about the parity drive. Do I need to increase the size of this drive too? At what point does a 3TB parity drive become too small for such a large array of data? Q2 (or discussion 2 ). Do I have any options with respect to pre_clear. From everything I have read I should pre_clear BEFORE I put the drives into the Unraid box. Thats all well and good but I only have an iMac 27" and a HP laptop with no USB 3. I thought about running a VM (Virtualbox) with Unriad and running pre_clear against the 6TB drives attached to the iMac in a USB3 enclosure. Some threads I have read have said you can't do this because Virtualbox doesn't have direct disk access - but then I read this: https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html "9.9.1.1. Access to entire physical hard disk While this variant is the simplest to set up, you must be aware that this will give a guest operating system direct and full access to an entire physical disk. If your host operating system is also booted from this disk, please take special care to not access the partition from the guest at all. On the positive side, the physical disk can be repartitioned in arbitrary ways without having to recreate the image file that gives access to the raw disk." Does anyone have any experience with this, or if it is impossible is there an alternative to run pre_clear externally to my current NAS setup with the hardware I have? Hopefully I am on the right track. I appreciate any comments about any of what I have written from the community. Thank you in advance. Daniel
  19. Hi All, As with most things that just work for you, once you have set them up you tend to ignore them and walk away. Well that has been my involvement with my nas since i installed unpaid 2 years ago. Over the last month I had an issue which was resolved thanks to the community here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=36157.0 This kind of put my unread installation back on the radar. I started reading whats going on and some of the awesome features that are coming out in v6.0. I am actually quite astounded. When I bought Unraid I was shocked at how good the product was and how little I had heard about it. Basically, I had spent years buying Netgear NAS drives and painfully working with RAID, controllers etc. I was toying with the idea of FreeNas at the time as I remember but procrastinated for months until I found Unraid. Anyway, down to the real reason I am posting. I joined and installed when v5 was in RC (version .06 I think) and then upgraded to final and then final v .04. Installed some nice add-ons and since then I haven't touched the thing. Now I feel I should think about v6.0. And despite people not liking how long its taking for final to come out - I for one am glad to see that the company is not being driven by deadlines (too much) and is really taking the time to make sure they deliver a solid product. I am even more happy that I get the upgrade for free. You guys have a wonderful model and process. My setup is currently: Celeron CPU, Gigabyte Motherboard, 4GB Memory, 3 x 3TB drives, 1 x 3TB cache drive. Big Antec case with room for about 15 drives. Question is, should I upgrade thinking about v6.0. I was thinking I could just buy a new one and install v 6.0 and the current one could be my on site back-up (Rather than using the old Netgear NV+) which currently has limited space to backup the Unraid box in the future (due to lack of support for the old SPARC Netgear NAS. My big driver for thinking about upgrading is the ability for my Unraid box to become the central point for most of my applications running on other box's / PC's. Here is where I have a big shout about Docker!! Why am I not seeing everyone getting excited about it on the forums!!! almost native running of apps that I need without the overhead of an OS!!! Anyway, not sure it will take off so don't know if the apps I want will end up being available or whether it becomes viable alternative to virtualisation or not, but hey, sounds exciting!! So .... before I read about docker I was thinking about Virtualising. Buying better hardware to centralise all my server based / web based apps on one box. I most certainly would have to upgrade if I am going to run another OS (someone can confirm that for me - I doubt a celeron based system with 4GB memory would suffice to run another OS on it. I also don't like the idea of running Unraid in a VM and Sxi type deal etc etc - I like Unraid having direct access to HW etc. But then should I wait to see how Docker comes along??? So thats where I am - confused. Plenty in this post, but I thought it might start some interesting conversation! Basically don't want to install beta version of Unraid yet but am certainly thinking about v6.0 Thoughts anyone ...?? Daniel :-)
  20. Thank you very much itimpi. When I was writing the post yesterday i let the mover do its thing and move the files in the cache drive to disk1. I saw your post before I went to bed and changed my settings back as per your suggestions and changed the split level back to HighWater. Last night the mover did its thing and moved files, this time it chose disk3 (the one with the most free space). All I can imagine is that for whatever reason the files on the Cache disk already existed on disk1 which is why it kept choosing that disk to overwrite. I can think of a number of scenarios for that (especially if I was playing at the time). Anyway, problem seems to be solved. I shall monitor, things but it seems all is ok. Thank you once again.

Seems to be pointing towards my split level settings but I can't see how that can be given it is now 6. Unless .... Given when I first did the setup it was set to SL 4 and now irrespective of what I changed that folder is now linked to that disk!? Not sure what I am saying - sort of grasping at straws.
  22. Hi All, I am experiencing a problem that for the life of me I cannot fix. Here is my setup for context: 3x 3TB array drives (disk 1 = 100GB free, disk 2 = 700GB free, disk 3 1.2TB free) 1x 3TB cache drive (sat with 1TB of data needed to be copied to the array) 1x 3TB parity drive (parity valid) specific share setting share (x1) = media allocation method = high water split level = 6 included disks = disk1,disk2,disk3 use cache disk = yes min free space = 30000000 general share setting included disks (share settings) = disk1,disk2,disk3 use cache disk = yes min free space = 35000000 Some time ago I had an issue whereby disk 1 got full and then I got write errors when the mover tried to copy to the array at night and basically my cache drive never got emptied. I realised that the issue was down to the split level I had (level 4) and that I had inadvertently created a new level when playing with my structure. e.g. went from media>Movies>Movie to media>Movies>HD Movies>Movie So i stepped in now, and moved a hundred or so gig over to disk 2. This left things a bit uneven (disk 1 = 100GB free, disk 2 = 700GB free and disk 3 = 1.2TB free) but I could live with it. Basically I think know it meant when the mover kicked in, it tried to copy files to disk 1 because of the split level settings overriding allocation method and minimum free space setting. So, I changed the split level to 6 (which is high enough basically to disable it as my structure doesn't go down that far) which I thought would allow the folder to disk link to break and other disks to start being used. BUT it didn't. When I run the mover manually it continues to fill disk 1. So .... I changed the allocation method to Most free, thinking it would have to start using disk 2 or disk 3. I assumed disk 3 as it is the one with the most free space. I started the mover again - nope - continues to try and fill disk 1. I am lost! I don't know what to do. I am sure this is my fault but I cannot see where! I would appreciate any insight people have as I am literally sat here typing this and watching the mover continue to fill disk 1 and leave the others alone! (((
  23. **UPDATE** Seems that the Split Level of 4 wasn't quite enough and the Mover still wanted to copy files to the Full disk. Thought about moving files from the full disk to the others, but then thought Why? Had a look at the Wiki and it indicates you can practically disable levelling by setting a "High" Level so that all files are copied across disks as free space is available. Given that the system organises everything so having files "all over" doesn't really matter, set the level to 6 (which is higher than anything I have" and run the Mover again. Things seem to be moving from the Cache drive again! LOL! What a fun Sunday!
  24. Hello everyone, I am a happy customer of Limetech and love my unraid installation. I can't believe I ever got by without it. Even worse I can't believe I ever used to waste my money on Readynas devices etc. I am a regular user of the forum, but not really a contributor. Virtually every issue I have had with this great software someone has had before so my issue is usually solved with a Google search of the site. Anyway, I came across an issue this morning which had me amused for a while. As with most people, once the setup of the has was done and well tested I left it. Don't open the settings page anymore - only time I log onto the box is to use the web UI of SABnzb etc For some reason I did this morning while I was watching a movie and noticed that the cache drive was spinning and the others were not. No biggie, this movie must have just recently been transferred to the nas. Erm, hang on - this movie is Ooooold. So I look at the contents of the cache drive! OMFG!! The mover had not been moving files onto the "array" for months and months. I have been playing new stuff from the cache drive all that time and never noticed. First thought .... "stupid mover script" lets execute it manually. Click button, go make coffee. Come back - mover script failed. Disk full. No biggie, thats fine. Disks get full. But hang on .... how can this be that it is failing, yes Disk 1 (3TB) is full - but the other two disks (also 3TB) no where near full, why aren't you moving on those. Second thought .... "stupid unraid", when I upgraded from RC to final of v5 maybe my Split Level got changed back to level 1 or something. Nope ... Level 2, Waterfall. I remember I setup everything like the wiki. E.g. Media>HD Movies>Movie hmmmm. Third thought .... "stupid user" *slaps head* ... at some point a while back, I decided I wanted more granularity on the media share, so created "another" level. E.g. Media>Movies>HD Movies>Movie. Crap, no wonder the mover wasn't working, because it is trying to keep that folder now on one disk. Disk gets full, mover fails. Anyway, It worked while I had my level setup as per the wiki and on Split Level 2 for over a year so the spread of media across disks is fairly good. So decided to just change Split Level to 3. Manually run the Mover, BOOM files are now being transferred to the "array". I guess my cache disk has had a bit more of a workout for the past 6 months than it should. My Parity is fine so I am not in any issue I guess. Perhaps if it had been running as I initially setup then my media would have been spread a bit more over the drives - but Parity is fine and I have a backup so I am good. Maybe there would have been a better solution to just changing the Split Level to 3, but I couldn't see a downside. Just sharing .... Happy Sunday! Daniel
  25. Hi everyone, I have searched the Wiki and have found all the instructions on a "new build" and upgrading (relating to older versions of Unraid) but none that I have complete confidence give me step by step instructions on following this guidance: If you are currently running an earlier unRAID Server OS 5.0-beta or 5.0-rc release: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Probably the best thing to do is backup your Flash, reformat, re-install, restore 'config' directory, and then reboot. I am a reasonably competent nix and pc user comfortable with scripts etc but with this I think following a step by step guide from those who know is probably best. I purchased the PRO version of unRAID straight away when it was in 5.0-rc11 and haven't upgraded since or even installed any add-ons - its the only version I have ever used. Would anyone be able to provide me with this guide or a link to it? Thank you in advance.
