  1. looking at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358&cm_re=mv8-_-16-101-358-_-Product it speaks about low profile, unless if by 'low profile' it means something else
  2. well, the thing is that this depends on the place you order it from. for example, in newegg the specify that they offer only a low bracket. in amazon, they dont specify it... where exactly did you get yours from?
  3. Hi everybody i need to by a new Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 sata expansion card and i found this in amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Supermicro-AOC-SASLP-MV8-with-CDR-Bracket/dp/B002KGLDXU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298261200&sr=8-1 Unfortunately it does not state if it is has a low or high profile bracket coming with it. i 've noticed that 3 out of 4 reviewers are mentioning their unraid server so i am hoping that someone can give me this little piece of info.... Thanks in advance.
  4. yeah, sorry, you're right. but better end it here. my experience says that as time passes the probability of someone appearing, who believes that he was sent by god to defend an OS, converges to 1
  5. expect for windows explorer which i think is even worse than the one of windows xp. i could list at least 10 things that annoy me in explorer and work well in linux (and possibly in Mac too)
  6. ... and the cool thing about unRAID is that it's mobo independent (provided you use a mobo that plays nice with unRAID). every OS is mobo independent (provided you use a mobo that plays nice with the OS) Not MacOS. It will only run on Intel boards or approved Apple boards. i stand corrected. (although there is hackintosh, but i dont know if it can run on all mobos) PS: btw, i have to say (and i dont mean to start an OS war, especially in this thread, i am not an avid fun of a particular OS anyway) i always see people bashing Microsoft when Apple is much more worse with its closed platforms...
  7. True, but say you're running a hardware based RAID5 setup. If the controller fails you need an identical controller. Or, if you wanted to move the array to a new system you'd again need an identical controller card (and maybe more). i agree with that. and it is worse with other proprietary stuff like drobo... anyways, my problem is not migrating unraid if there is a hardware malfunction but constructing new unraid servers. it is a problem if you want to make a business out of it or have many friends who want you to help them creating their new unraid server

  9. what is worse is that mobos change with the speed of light and when you find one that fits you you either have to stock up or hope you will be able to find more later...
  10. I can only wish you good luck. I also have the same problem with Germany (i live in Greece). I have seen cases where i got items dispatched from both the U.K. and Germany and the former arrived 2 weeks earlier than the latter. There must be a problem with Germany's post office services. (And i cant stress that enough, i live in Greece, my post office standards are very low )
  11. Maybe I'm asking for a blow to my confidence in my own build, but I've been thinking that I've been getting sustained writes to my 7200RPM parity drive of about 60-70MB/s (see my pic). I am not using a beta version (but I check the boards fairly regularly for upcoming features, build reports, etc.). Have I been misunderstanding the speeds I've been getting? I can regularly move 3 to 4 GB's worth of files to my server in about a minute. Sorry for hijacking the thread... you are probably writing to your RAM and it gives an initial boost to the apparent "sustained" rate until it cannot buffer any more. I'll bet you have at least 4Gig of RAM. How much memory do you have? Joe L. I have 2GB of RAM in my Unraid system, and I consistently get those writes. No bursts. I can transfer 100GB worth of VIDEO_TS folders in less than 35 minutes, easily. I do it all the time. This is about 50MB/s and it is almost what i get in my pc internally. it doesn't seem right. the best i get with 7200rpm HDDs in unraid is 35MB/s. (i have sata I in my mobo, but i do not think this is the limiting factor). could it be that your parity is not working? Or, maybe, you have an amazing machine... What are your specs?
  12. There generally seems to be a problem with EARS and unraid. i have noticed that many-many times in the forums. i, personally, had problems with 2 EARS drives (fresh from the box and jumpered). they would get stuck always at the same point of preclear. i tried unjumpering, i performed extensive smart and factory tests, i even tried SpinRite and they showed no errors. But they lock in unraid (at least in preclear). Obviously, i did not want to risk it so i RMA'd them....
  13. i've seen it suggested elsewhere, maybe it would be nice in the next version of unraid to have a mirroring of the cache drive. as a cache drive is usually small, it would not cost much to have 2 cache drives. actually, i think i have seen some people mentioning that they have 2 drives as cache using their mobos' raid functionality
  14. £120? I paid £58.49 + VAT (£68.72) when I bought mine. really? strange.... here it is in amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0010SITC2/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A1F8YGP86NG3IP @adrian ballard: thanks. i also saw from the post you mentioned how the internal hdds are cooled
  15. i am posting just to verify. p&p for greece costs only 5 pounds from AVIDES (through amazon.co.uk). it is the "Miditower Sharkoon Rebel12 Value-Edition black" (costing 120 pounds) but it is not a midi for sure. the difference from the economy version is the huge fan on the side. and a question: if i buy (from amazon.de) the much cheaper eco model, i understand it would be wise to buy this: http://www.amazon.de/Rebel12-Fan-Frame-System-frame/dp/B001DQE8DK/ref=sr_1_7?m=AOC3G2PBG3IY7&s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1297732096&sr=1-7 does this fit behind the 5.25 brackets, behind the internal HD enclosures or both?
  16. very nice! i think i will be moving soon to v.5. Just one question: do you have any idea as to when there will be a non-beta/final version 5 available?
  17. i assume the system crashed so you had to restart. the drive wont be listed in the webgui anyways since it is not part of the array. you should be able to see it in Joe's unMenu or if you connect with telnet. if you still cannot see it there, i would guess, that the drive is either faulty or your sata cable should be resitted. to be sure, check if you can see it through the BIOS.
  18. no,not at all you should not remove or add the jumper fter preclear or you will loose your preclear signature and have to preclear again. up to now the recommended action would be to use the jumper and then preclear. that said, there are new unraid betas available for downloading that support advanced formating HDs such as EARS. the new preclear script by Joe also supports advanced formatting. so the combination of those 2 allows unjumpered AF HDs to be used.
  19. Joe, i hope you are not implying that you have created regular expressions to automatically answer to our posts. Even you cannot be THAT good?
  20. in all tests except preclear they seemed fine Also, the disks were not send to WD but the service department of the shop i bought them tested the disk and said it's OK (they have a point, most of HDs returned are usually OK but inexperianced people mistake them for faulty). That's when a i performed all the tests since, of course, i do not trust the service department blindly. also, before preclearing each time i used the dd command tha Joe mentions Even the long smart test came out fine.
  21. it is true that fdisk would not work after preclear would stall and i had to restart the server for it to work (you actually helped me with that in the 'questions about preclear' forum) . And i understand you probably are right that's why i have put the latest preclear script in my flash and will try again when i have the time. but how posting the syslog will help? does syslog contain info on disks that are not part of the array? And the other question is why does the EARS pass all the other tests? (spinrite is very rigid, AFAIK)
  22. @Joe:thanx @lionelhutz: Well, the thing is that my EARS drive gets precleared up to a point and then stalls. i have tried preclear first with a jumper (straight from the box) and then without. I have bought 3 ears drives. 1 of them was precleared fine, 2 have this problem with preclear. when i returned one of them and got a new one it precleared fine. but the other one i returned they told me they tested it and it's fine. so i run various test like wd diagnostics, windows chkdsk and even spinrite and indeed they show that it is ok. so i am hoping that if i use it in native AF with the new 4.7 unraid i may see some good results. Otherwise i dont know what to do with the disk. it might actually be a bug with preclear because i have seen too many people having problems with ears and i thoroughly tested mine for any problems, but how can i be sure
  23. Hi guys, i have a problem with my already jumpered EARS and thinking of unjumpering it to use it in Adavanced format with unraid 4.7 Searching through the forums i am given to understand that using: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb count=8 will allow the drive to be properly precleared/used in the array again without the jumper. Am i right or do i need to do something else? Thanks in advance...
  24. Hi Joe I was trying to preclear an EARS 2T and i got the same error i have had with the same type of disk some time ago: it stoped at a point during preread and when i try again to precleal i get the message: /boot/preclear_disk.sh: line 550: 1+( 2556951756)%() : syntax error: operand expected (error token is ") ") Would you happen to have an update as to why this error occurs? is it preclear-related or would i have had the same kind of problem if i had put it straight to the array? PS:I have two other 2Tb EARS HDDs that were precleared with no problems...
