Fixed this myself via an update to this post of mine.... turns out when you update the firmware you need a drive in each slot of the 4 bay dock AND then you need to flash the Jmicron controller for each slot of the dock to get it onto the latest firmware.... for me this was 1.73hardkernel firmware release and now I can spin up and down all the drives or individual drives successfully.... For anyone else with a jmicron 758 controller dock I'd recommend trying an update. Obviously there is risk here as these firmwares are not from the dock vendor but it worked for me on a cheap aliexpress 4 bay dock!

Should add that with same dock attached to a Windows 11 PC all drives spin down after 10 mins with Windows HDD sleep setting set to 10 mins.

I have a 4 drive USB dock connected to unRAID. Its not yet in use so these drives show up in "unassigned devices" and this issue happens if they are mounted or unmounted. No drives have any data on them and they're not in use at all. If I click on "Spin Down" one drive (dev 3) the first in the unassigned devices list spins down (green LED icon next to the dev number goes off) but all the other drives don't. Physically can feel the one drive is not spinning but the rest are. Any ideas on this one? Diag file attached. tower-diagnostics-20240416-1752.zip

Thanks, does that keep all my docker configs on the SSD drive and they'll still boot and run etc? I don't want to do that and find I then have to set up all the dockers and make all my unRAID configs and remote SMB shares all over again....

I originally set up a mini pc as a test with just its built in 500GB SSD. I've got a lot configured on it now (/appdata for lots of dockers etc). I've recently added some spinning disks that I could now form a real array with. Is it possible to move the SSD drive out of being the only drive in the array I begun with, make it a cache drive (+appdata permanently there?) and create the array with the spinning disks?

This is all very werid - I upgraded the firmware of the dock (jmicron 758/9 controller) to a custom firmware created to pass through all serial numbers etc... First I backed up the original firmware.... EDIT: Note you also need to Flash the controller for EACH for the 4 HDD's. So using the tool flash drive 1 controller, power cycle, wait, then flash drive 2 controller... etc. You need a drive in the bay to do this - i loaded the dock with 4 drives and went through and flashed each one. However I have ONE of the original 2GB Hitachi drives that no matter what is not detected by unRAID. It appears in the drive list under Tools/System Devices but won't appear in unassigned drives no matter what. As far as I can tell it has a different serial number. If I remove that drive and replace it with another 2GB drive (Seagate) that drive is found and added to unassigned drives. Just leaving this all here for anyone else searching in the future on Jmicron 758 or 759 USB dock issues.

I installed unRAID initially as a test on a small N100 mini PC. This device had a single SSD and that became the "array" after the initial install. I didn't set it to that. If at some point I add some spinning disks how do I make that become the "cache" drive (keep the app data on it for my dockers etc) and then the new spinning disks become the array without breaking the whole set up that was based on the single SSD being the array? This is just a test install for me right now so ultimately if come unRAID 7 this becomes a lot more flexible I can also wait and follow advice then....

Thanks thats really weird as smartctl --all /dev/sd"X"/ -d sat was reporting different serials. I've the dock plugged into Synology right now but I'll swap it back later and check... The drvies definitely has unique serial numbers as outside of the drives even list it and I've used that in the prior Windows Sever MegaRAID controller set up I had them in to identify them.... Have you seen docks based on Jmicron 758 incorrectly report serial numbers? But then smartctl would show same issue I would think....

I just moved a 4 disk USB HDD dock (uses jmicron 758 controller) over from Windows (deleted all volumes on the disks in windows diskmanager first) and in unassigned devices only 2 of them show up. When I go to "Tools, System Devices" I do see all 4 disks but only 2 appear in unassigned devices. Any ideas? For sure but for a lot of users it is both a SMB client and a server. As someone new to unRAID this was/is quite unnerving as my first ever upgrade experience. I am however very grateful for the super easy and quick down grade procedure which was awesome. Let's hope it's fixed soon.

I think on a NAS anytime file sharing capabilities regress that's a major issue.

From the bug forum (and my experience) there seems to be a major SMB regression with this release.

Same issue here. My SMB mount is via unassigned devices and goes to a Synology share (DSM 7.2 latest) and at least one of the subfolders in the share just has zero content visible in the share now. The data is all there on Synology and my Windows PCs see it fine. Same errors in the unRAID logs as reported here. Can't roll back as I didn't back up config since this is just a test server right now. But it's broken a bunch of my docker apps that use the share like Kavita, Jellyfin etc.
