  1. I can't figure out how the "insert Image" works on this board http://cid-fbb6e89dcde093eb.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public
  2. no.... I'm running 4 sticks of 1gb with no issues.... either you didn't upgrade to the latest bios or it's an issue with mismatched sizes in the wrong channels or something...
  3. sure... Adaptec is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816103058&Tpk=16-103-058 and the Rosewill is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132008
  4. They (2) just arrived today... I also hedged my bet and ordered an Adaptec PCIE 4x 4port Raid card.... Flashing the boards was easy once I realised I had to disable the on-board Silicon Image controller... I'll try to attach a zip with the BIOS file and Flasher program... Okay, as a baseline I have 6 Seagate 1tb drives, initially all 6 on the ICH8R motherboard controller.... Parity check at the 1% point was about 81 MB/sec. I moved the last two drives, one on each new card... wow... 87 MB/sec... reflects the reduced load on the ICH8R, and each of the two moved drives had it's own PCIE 1X lane... put both drives on one new controller... ooops down to 66 MB/sec... ouch... two drives on one lane ain't so good! Installed the Adaptec in the empty PCIE 16X video card slot (running PCI video).... put both drives on it... 92 MB/sec... I like it... so......... I'm gonna leave it just like this.... I can put 6 drives on the ICH8R, 4 on the Adaptec, and one on each Rosewill for 12 drives, which goes with my 4 3in2 Kingwins the other on-board connections will be for the Cache drive and my Slackware boot drive! ciao....
  5. That's one of the most frustrating things about UnRaid, I think... I have to read every one of Weebotech's, JoeL's, and Tom's posts in order to find all these gems.... Tom, what about the 64 bit compiles... are you here?
  6. I see I have a LOT to learn I Googled emhttp and found only that it is embedded http server. Obviously, in UnRaid Tom has given it a lot more functionality. How did you find out what the command line options are? Or did you just run it with a "?" ? I was thinking there might be some on-line doc that talked about it. Do you recall which modules won't run in multiprocessor kernel ? Tom... any chance you could compile the proprietary stuff in 64 bit with no warranty for us to play with Jim
  7. So, ultimately it sounds like it is possible... I'm nowhere near trying it yet, but it's further inducement for me to learn a LOT more about Linux... who says learning stops at over sixty? I guess my first project will be to get it running under a full Slackware distro as posted elsewhere on this forum... as to emhttp, it would sure be nice if we could even get it to just use another port instead of 80, no? Then maybe Apache could run along side of it...?
  8. here ya go... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565
  9. the Crucial memory I referred to is $49 BEFORE the $30 rebate
  10. How low is low? Factory re-certified Abit AB9Pro's are on EBay for $49....
  11. The Core2 architecture seems to be somewhat oblivious of the ram's performance numbers, faster ram usually buys you very little in other than benchmarks... that said, Newegg is selling Crucial Ballistix 2x1024gb @gb Kits at $49 dollars with a $30 rebate ! And it is 4-4-4-12 800 mhz ram... can't hardly go wrong.... I have this stuff in ALL of my machines and it works great.... you need to bump up the dram voltage in the cmos setup though, to 2.15-2.2 volts.... Jim
  12. In theretical and/or practical terms, what would be required for me to move my UnRaid box over to run under Ubuntu as opposed to Slackware? If it requires some recompilation of the "file system driver" (?) would Tom be willing to do it for some radical wacko like myself? I put together a pretty overkill box for it and I was envisioning going the virtual machine route, but Ubuntu, and MythBuntu in particular, look pretty slick as a base system. I'm not sure I would get the needed performance for a Myth box backend recording tv shows as a VM. AB9 Pro Q6600 or E4300 OC'd to 3ghz 4gb DDr2-800 6 (so far) Seagate 1TB 2 Seagate 500gb, 1 Cache and 1 Linux drive 2 Rosewill 2port SATA300 cards for future expansion 4 Kingwin 3 in 2 Trayless cages Thermaltake Armor Chassis OCZ 600W supply Any comments welcomed.... Jim
  13. If you decide to check out the AB9 Pro, you'll find a bit of a dodgy reputation overall due to numerous DOA's... I bought factory refurbed units from a dealer on EBay that sells them in a dutch-auction and got them (2) for the starting $49 price....
  14. From what I've read, you re-flash the card with the bios from the SiL website and it gives you individual drives.... I'll soon know as I ordewred two... I'll be sure to post back
  15. sure... put a folder into the root of each drive all named the same, such as UNRAID set up a user share named UNRAID with read/write status and you're good to go...
  16. Since the Abit AB9Pro has those two PCIE 1X slots, I was thinking of just plunking in a pair of $20 Rosewill SiI 3132 2 port controllers...
  17. Wouldn't a port multiplier cause a bottleneck when more than one of the external disks are accesed ?? A parity sync comes to mind....
  18. I don't believe that's true .... it may be true about the linux drivers, but they CAN be spundown under Windows...
  19. Note that the slots in the Kingwin units are pretty shallow... the tabs on my Thermaltake Armor case were about 3/16" and just barely made it
  20. How did you manage to determine that in Linux?
