Quick question guys, has anyone run a preclear on the m1015 in IT mode or did I miss a setting somewhere? I just tried to run it on 4 different 3TB drives on two dif controllers on 5beta12a. Keep in mind I have 2 M1015's and 1MV8 passed though to unraid in ESX. not that it "should" matter.. I just wanted to make sure I am on the correct path...

Great idea. The problem you will need to overcome is airflow. The entire front is mesh so getting directed airflow will be a challenge. Also with the drives laid like that, there is no way to properly cool them unless the bottom is mesh and you can pull air up from bottom. I would build some sort of drive rack like this http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2031.msg14880#msg14880 You also could block off some of the mesh from the inside to help direct/control air flow. Cooling is key for storage servers. Awesome Idea. Let us know how it works in the end.

it is the Rosewill RSV-Z2000 newegg has had this server on shell shocker a few times for about $20 off. I am not a fan of how the power supply is mounted in it. it has a poor airflow design. If you use a bottom mounted PSU in a rack, the server above it suffocates it. if you have it with nothing above it, it prone to debris (say a loose screw!) falling into the PSU. If you used a rear-exhaust PSU, the hot air from it gets blown out the front of the server and sucked right back into the drive bay. (that's still better then suffocation) other then that, for what it is, it looks fairly "clean" and an inexpensive way to get 9 hard drives into a single 2U server.

A bit late on this.. It has been noted on some of the overclocker forums that LSI raid cards do not run correctly on the Asus X67 series of motherboards. I believe the problem stemmed from Asus not putting the correct electrical connectors on those mobos for the LSI cards to work correctly.

they do the job. I prefer the supermicro units myself. I really should get the norco units since i have several RPC-4224's. That would allow me to switch drives easier between my rackmounts and towers. but I don't.. Most everyone has a preference to what they like. I like the supermicro hardware a bit better for its enterprise level quality. but, norco saves you a few bucks and does the job almost as well. [OT] Nexus Prominent 9 It will hold 3 5in3's. I had 3 in there but I had a defective backplane in my 3rd SM box (I got it open box and it was physically damaged by the previous owner). Since I have that as a 14 drive build. I replaced the defective unit with one of the 4in3's supplied with the case in the bottom section. Raj turned me onto it.. A very nice case. expensive, but worth it. [/ot]

They have no "power" LED, just activity that is green, but not crazy bright. There is also a Yellow Fail LED that I belive only works with the correct hardware.

While that sounds like a nice idea, It sounds like a big point of failure for data transfer. I think I would just like to see a rev. breakout cable the correct length. I assume this board has the EPS12V requirement? (as do the other tyan C202/C204 boards)

looks like a nice board. I would use it. The only thing i dislike is it uses sata headers instead of SAS connectors.. that is not a big deal.

remember that the command and path is all case sensitive and make sure you don't have a windows carriage return after the command Try copying the line from the go script and pasting it into putty and make sure it works.

That reminds me of several WHS builds i have seen. 1 mediasmart server and lots and lots of external boxes.

with a bit of work. you "could do it". from what I am seeing, 2 3.5" drives up top get to hot without a fan mod of some kind. I would stick to a single 3.5 or get some 2.5" drive in a 4in1 adapter.. that would be pretty expensive route IMO. If you really want 6x 3TB and 1x 2.5" drives, I would get an Supermicro atom board and a fractal mini R2 ITX. the footprint is about the same size and no modding needed. assemble and boot. the performance would be about the same. It will run you about $50 more.

The -d 9 should tell it to go 9 folders in from root. Do you have enough ram? I would try a -i and do just the tv dir for testing. Also it could be the space in the filename. Turn on the logging and look Also at a console, restart it with -F -v I think watch in realtime what it does

thats a nice way to hide 10TB in plain sight. I am a fan of SFF PC's.

It should work fine. Just be careful to not knock the cable out. That could cause problems. I would also spend a few extra bucks to make sure the drive enclosure is a decent quality so you don't cook the drive under heavy loads. I have seen some cheap one do that. you could also buy a prebuilt external and it might cost less. like a WD or Seagate 2TB external with Esata. (although they seem to be getting rare with USB3 being the newest rage)

there was no such deal in the US. I work very closely with HP at work since we are replacing all our "rackables" and supermicro servers with HP blade servers. they are out almost daily to the datacenter and i keep pointing out the UK deal. they keep saying they wish they could get one at that price in the states. they said best they can do is give me a G7 at about 1/3 off ..

Trust Me. If I was in the UK, i'd have 4 of these.

hrmm.. What is the differance in the new model and the old model besides the hard drive size? I almost got one a while back and now that the 160gig model is on sale... i might get it.

+1 I knew about the pico power supply but i had not really given it much thought until you posted this. Now i am wondering if i can get one to work inside a chenbro mITX Pedistal Sever case or to mod one for a dell GX620 mini form factor. I have one of each with no power supply.

You're not just buying a drive, You're buying a service and quality control. You're buying 40+ hours of someone else's time burning in, preclearing and testing. You're buying the peace of mind of not dealing with a bunch of defective drives from the monsters (newegg or bigbox) that care less about quallity... not dealing with RMA's and Downtime waiting for replacements. Whats Your time worth? 25 cents an hour for someone else to do the grunt work? Sounds good to me personally. @raj. Good luck on your endeavour.... Edited

I dont belive so. there are 4in3's that have slots in them for tabs. for 5 drives to fit, the tabs are in the way of the drives...

I would like to point out. If you find the supermicro fans to be to loud, you can unplug the fan cable on the back of the unit and put a fan speed controller on it. I cranked my fans way down to the almost silent point and i still have almost the same temp readings with green drives. the fan fail alarm still works with the speed controller. Of course your mileage may vary. You might have to find the sweet spot of minimal sound and decent temps. The supermicro cages are also interchangeable with the current line of supermicro servers. You can get spare cages for just under $20 each shipped if you need one for a cold spare or your dog eats one. As far as the fail light, I think you have to buy the more expensive flavor pointed out elsewhere in this thread. Not the $110 model from newegg, you also need to have a supermicro board/controller. to keep costs down for the consumer the pullouts are universal. so they have the lights. the cheap-o model is missing the circuitry? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to get mine to work on my SM boards or my Areca cards.

nice lab You might want to take the mobo off the antistatic bag. thats actually pretty bad for the board. the cardboard box itself should be good.
