  1. so sorry for the noise. i should have thought of updating CA first. that update fixed my issue. and thanks for the excellent support. steve
  2. folks, just upgraded to unraid 6.12.4. when i go to 'apps' tab, it is stuck on 'updating content'. tried rebooting server to no effect. tried diff web browsers and tried rebooting in safe mode too unraid server seems to be functional otherwise. debug log attached. any help would be much appreciated. thanks, steve CA-Logging-20231126-1404.zip
  3. i have the same issue with a handful of drives (ie numbers continue to increase). i have even moved some to a diffferent controller (and therefore different cables) to no avail. i think i'll just have to turn off notification since it is flooding my email with these alerts. steve
  4. not 100% sure, but i think the line in the conf file: UseFtpUsers off tells the ftp server to use os accounts. i think unraid creates os users from network (eg samba) users. so my guess is that users are automically added to FTP hope this helps, steve
  5. here's what i did... . used package manager (unmenu) to install proftpd . restarted unraid . all the doc said there should be a /boot/packages/proftpd.conf file. there wasnt. . found a copy in another unraid posting . that didnt work . added the requiredvalidshell line . rebooted i have attached my working proftpd.conf file that you should place in the /boot/packages directory after installing the proftpd package. hope this helps steve proftpd.conf
  6. just in case someone else is having the issue i had.... proftpd was displaying error in its log when i tried to log in: Invalid shell: '/bin/false' i fixed this by adding this line to to my /boot/packages/proftpd.conf file: RequireValidShell off steve
  7. perhaps. try issuing the 'mover' command from the command line. you might get more meaningful messages. good luck, steve
  8. Did you setup your time machine using some sort of wizard, using predefined names ? It seems possible to edit "Sara's Macbook". See here : http://pondini.org/TM/C9.html ahh - i did not think about looking into that. when i get home from work i'll check it out and let you know. thanks for the really good advice. steve
  9. yes - that is what i have done. although it almost defeats the purpose of the cache drive since those pesky time machine backups seem to write to unraid all the time (and hence keep the parity and data drives spun up).
  10. mount -t cifs -o utf8,other,options,here //server/share /path/to/mount/point but this mount would be for unraid to mount a remote windows share right? would that help in my case? my situation is: - i have an unraid disk that is shared as a 'timemachine' share (which is some kind of apple **black** magic) - one of our apple computers is backing up to that share via the apple backup utility (call timemachine). - that backup process is creating the directory that is causing unraid to crash when the mover runs to copy from the cache drive maybe i misunderstood your suggestion. and btw, thanks a whole lot for trying to help. steve
  11. yes you are right - but this is a timemachine (ie mac backup) process and it uses whatever names it finds on the computer that it is backing up. i dont think it reasonable that the presence of a particular character should cause the whole unraid server to crash.
  12. another data point: when i look at the directory "Sara’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle" in windows (samba) i see: "Sara’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle" in linux (ls -l), i see: "Saraâs\ MacBook\ Air.sparsebundle" and in the syslog, the mover displayed it as: "Saraâ\200\231s MacBook Air.sparsebundle" so what's up with that freakin apostrophe?? i guess this mac generated name contains some weird, non-printable characters. i'll bet that is what's causing unraid to crash. thoughts anyone?
  13. another data point: i was able to view/edit file \\BIGASS\cache\timeMachine\Sara’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle\com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.bckup via the samba share steve
  14. since adding an ssd cache drive, mover is crashing my system each night. when mover is run in the foreground i get these messages: root@bigass:~# mover mover started moving timeMachine/ ./timeMachine/Sara’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle/com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.bckup *** glibc detected *** rsync: free(): invalid next size (normal): 0x080d2450 *** ======= Backtrace: ========= /lib/libc.so.6(+0x705aa)[0xb76b25aa] /lib/libc.so.6(+0x73503)[0xb76b5503] /lib/libc.so.6(cfree+0x70)[0xb76b86b0] rsync[0x807cd74] rsync[0x807de60] rsync[0x804f3aa] rsync[0x8050b5f] rsync[0x8051e56] rsync[0x8065825] rsync[0x80666ac] /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe6)[0xb7658b86] rsync[0x804aad1] ======= Memory map: ======== and the system no longer responds (unless i do a system reset). it looks like rsync had an issue with some MAC time machine back up files. other non time-machine files do not bother the mover/rsync thoughts? thanks, steve btw, last nights syslog attached (i could only get this by redirecting syslog via 'tail -f' to disk since unraid is dead when the fault happens) syslog.txt
  15. i use unraid as a Time Machine (backup) server for all the macs (2) in our house hope this helps, steve
  16. thanks for the info. i'll check it out. steve
  17. nice reponse. the 'unified' share name is a feature that really appeals to me and is frequently overlooked when comparing features with other products like snapraid. prior to unraid, i would spend a lot of time trying to manage multiple shares across mutliple hosts for my backups & movie collection. that was a pain. life is a lot simpler for me now that i have unraid and two shares (one for backup & the other for movies). btw, i did finally upgrade to version 5 with no issues. steve
  18. yeah - i do get the sense that Limetech are on the one hand saying: 'use the beta because it is really stable' but on the other hand saying 'only use it for test arrays'. definitley mixed messages and in a professional enviroment i could never condone use of beta software to protect data.
  19. fyi... i tested my read tranfser speed and was getting 50MB/s to win7 via samba after upgrading, on the same file i get 60MB/s. mtu did not change just thought i'd share. steve
  20. excellent replies. thanks guys. steve
  21. no - not a stupid question. but also not a problem that unraid is designed to solve. these problems are usually addressed by some kind of off-site backup like cloud storage. hope this helps, steve
  22. i need to start using 3tb drives and generally dont trust beta software and am concerned we may not see v5 go GA for a long time. and before folks start telling me that the beta releases are stable, i cannot ignore the message posted by the author of the software that the beta should not be used for anything but test arrays. so, i am thinking about jumping ship to snapraid. does anyone have experience (ie pros/cons) with it? here's a link: http://snapraid.sourceforge.net/compare.html btw, i use unraid to store static data like movies & backups. i can live without real time parity protection (as long as i get it within 24 hours or so). thanks a lot, steve
  23. i somewhat agree. but when a product languishes that long, it may indicate deeper problems like: is limetech as commited to unraid as they once were. perhaps they have a buyer for it. i just seems odd that that it has taken THIS long for a new production grade version to be released. especially when viewed in the light of the turnaround of prev releases. hopefully i am dead wrong steve
