bdydrp
Hi all, Would like some guidance on what to do next! After a data drive became disable, I removed the device and started to rebuild parity. Next morning I check the status and saw the parity drive is now disabled. It happened sometime during the rebuild. I have tried resetting the cables and sata card to no avail. I can post diags shortly but they are after a number of reboots. Just wanting some advice of how to proceed? Cheers Quote Link to comment
trurl
If possible before rebooting and preferably with the array started Go to Tools - Diagnostics and attach the complete Diagnostics ZIP file to your NEXT post in this thread. Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
I have tried new set of cables and still showing disabled. The 1031 zip, should be from when the 1st drive was disabled, prior to rebuilding parity. The 1353 zip, I think was after parity was disabled. But can't remember if it was before or after a reboot The 1718 zip is from the current state now after changing cables and rebooting Hope these can help. I thought of Getting a new drive and adding it in as parity and rebuilding with existing drives. Then not sure how to access disabled drives without losing data! tower-diagnostics-20201221-1031.zip tower-diagnostics-20201230-1354.zip tower-diagnostics-20201230-1718.zip Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
What happened to disk4? It's no longer part of the array, did you do a new config? Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
Disk 4 disabled to start with. So I removed it from the array and did a new config and rebuilt parity. During re rebuild, parity drive disabled! Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
So you don't want disk4 in the array no more? If so just re-enable parity and re-sync. Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
During parity rebuild after removing disk 4, the parity drive became disabled and now I can't start array. Parity drive has red x Edited December 30, 2020 by bdydrp Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Array can still start with parity disabled, in fact the last diags you posted have the array started. Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
So whats the best way to recover from here? If i could get disk 4 reading again (no red x) as well as existing parity drive Do i just add them both into the array (parity assigned to parity slot) and rebuild? Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
If you wanted to rebuild disk4 you should never have removed it from the array, you can see if the old disk still mounts, and if yes do a new config with it and re-sync parity. Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
Im not fussed about disk 4 apart from the fact it has data which the parity drive was emulating. But since parity drive is also disabled, i need to get at least 1 of them working to not lose anything? As it is now, i cant resync as parity is disabled Quote Link to comment

bdydrp
Thanks for the link...... If i read that correctly, rebuilding the drive reconstructs its contents with what was being emulated by the parity? If i start with the parity drive, rebuilding will rebuild contents based on existing disks in array (excluding disk 4)? When i add disk 4 back to array, it will show as new and want me to format? Thus losing contents? Can ddrescue help with recovering disk4 contents? Quote Link to comment

In this case it will re-sync parity without disk4. 8 minutes ago, bdydrp said: When i add disk 4 back to array, it will show as new and want me to format? Thus losing contents? See if it mounts with the UD plugin. Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
Thanks for your patience.. Last question before i try anything in the morning...(almost midnight and not doing anything this late) If i can get both parity and disk 4 to be added back to array as new disks, can i run parity sync and keep contents of disk 4? JorgeB
1 minute ago, bdydrp said: can i run parity sync and keep contents of disk 4? Yes, if the old disk still has data, you can't rebuild it since it was removed from the array. Quote Link to comment
bdydrp
Thanks. Yes there is still data on it. I only removed the disk as it being emulated, so wanted to resync disk across the array incase another drive failed But i realise now, there were better options! Appreciate your help Quote Link to comment
